Weekend Movie News 12-19-14 to 12-21-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Although it seemed late last month that the role was going to Natalie Portman, Variety now confirms that fellow Academy Award winner Kate Winslet (Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) has entered negotiations to play the female lead in Universal Pictures’ upcoming, still untitled Steve Jobs biopic. Winslet joins Michael Fassbender (Shame, X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Steve Jobs and Seth Rogen (Neighbors, The Interview) as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Danny Boyle (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire is directing. Based on Walter Isaacson’s 2011 biography “Steve Jobs,” the untitled film is written by Aaron Sorkin and is said to focus on three distinct chapters of Jobs’ life, each set against a major product launch, spanning 16 years of the man’s life. Winslet’s specific role has yet to be revealed.

I think that Winslet will be great for this film. I think she would probably be playing Steve Job's wife and she could have amazing chemistry with Fassbender, but I'm really wondering what her role will be because it's supposed to be set during the behind-the-scenes action before 3 major product launches. If this casting comes true then this is an amazing cast that also includes Seth Rogen and the rumored Natalie Portman. All I can say I cannot wait to see this film and this will get a lot of Oscar attention.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first trailer (via Yahoo!) for their upcoming comedy Get Hard, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart in an Etan Cohen film and you can check it out below. The film, which also stars Alison Brie, Edwina Findley and Craig T. Nelson, follows a rich bank manager (Ferrell) who is wrongfully convicted and sentenced to time in a maximum security prison. To prepare himself for his incarceration, Ferrell’s character hires the man who washes his car (Hart) to toughen him up in his final 30 days of freedom. Get Hard hits theaters on March 27, 2015.

I didn't really like this trailer. When I first heard about the plot of this film as well as the pairing of Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart I thought I was going to crack up and this trailer didn't make me laugh once. I have a feeling that this film could very well be a bomb and critics will hate it. I hope this doesn't happen, but only time will tell.

Following a first trailer back in October, Warner Bros. Pictures has brought online two new character posters for their upcoming conman romance, Focus. These two designs offer new looks at headlining stars Will Smith (I Am Legend, Men in Black) and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, About Time). Written and directed by the Crazy, Stupid, Love pair of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, Focus follows Nicky (Smith), a seasoned master of misdirection who becomes romantically involved with novice con artist Jess (Margot Robbie). As he’s teaching her the tricks of the trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame–now an accomplished femme fatale–shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high stakes racecar circuit. In the midst of Nicky’s latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop… and the consummate con man off his game. Although Focus marks the first onscreen pairing of Margot Robbie and Will Smith, they’re already set for a second major big screen project together as Warner Bros. Pictures has already recruited both stars for David Ayer’s DC Comics antihero team-up, Suicide Squad. In that film, Robbie will play Harley Quinn and Smith will play Deadshot. Also starring Rodrigo Santoro (300, The Last Stand) and Gerald McRaney (The Best of Me, “Longmire”), Focus hits theaters February 27, 2015.

Margot Robbie and Will Smith

These are some pretty nice posters. They are small, simple and to the point with not a lot of extra flashiness. I really enjoyed the trailer for the film and it sounds and looks amazing and the cast has a lot of amazing talent. I honestly cannot wait to see this film. The one thing that concerns me with the film is that is comes out in February which is known for having a lot of crappy films, but there have been gems in the month and hopefully this can be a gem.

Deadline brings word that Sony has picked up the rights to the 1983 animated film Fire and Ice with Robert Rodriguez set to adapt it into live action, which he has been developing since 2011. Based on the work of artist Frank Frazetta, whom Rodriguez was friends with before his passing, the project is seen as a potential new franchise for the studio. “I started developing it independently with Bold Films,” Rodriguez tells the outlet. “The more we started putting it together, we realized it could be something much bigger and it started attracting A-list talent. I thought, ‘Let’s partner with a studio,’ but which would give it the rocket fuel it deserves? I’d heard Mike De Luca was looking for franchises, and I thought this could fit the bill because of the subject matter and the talent that was interested, people who’d seen the presentation I had and wanted to. Turned out Mike was a big Frazetta fan, and the studio was the perfect place. I’d started out with them with El Mariachi, and I had a long relationship with the studio and it seemed like the perfect rocket fuel for this. We’re actively interviewing to hire A-list writers to do another pass to get this going next year. I’m excited.” The original film was directed by Fritz the Cat and The Lord of the Rings (1978) director Ralph Bakshi from a script by comic writers Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas. It’s described as follows: “A prehistoric battle of the elements as the dissolute ruler of the Ice World, Nekron, starts a war against the fire people using a massive, advancing glacier and armies of subhuman monsters as his weapons.”

This sounds like a really bad idea. First off this property is not well-known at all and I had never even heard of it. The only reason why I think it's a bad idea is that Robert Rodriguez isn't doing do great right now with his film projects and this film has the potential to be completely awful. I hate to see people fail, but at the current moment it's looking that way.

After making a splash (or is that splatter?) as Oberyn Martell on last season’s “Game of Thrones,” TheWrap reports that actor Pedro Pascal has landed a role opposite Matt Damon in director Zhang Yimou’s epic The Great Wall, which may be the largest film ever shot entirely in China. This will not be the first time Pascal and Damon have been seen onscreen, as the Chilean actor had a small part in 2011′s The Adjustment Bureau. Pascal’s profile has risen since his tenure as Oberyn, having secured the plum role of Pontius Pilate in Timur Bekmambetov’s Ben-Hur, as well as a lead role in the Pablo Escobar-themed TV series “Narcos.” Set in 15th century China, The Great Wall is about British warriors who happen upon the hurried construction of the massive wall. As night falls, the warriors realize that the haste in building the wall isn’t just to keep out the Mongols — there is something inhuman and more dangerous. Bryan Cranston was reported as being considered for a major role in the film, but he has now fallen out of negotiations. Production is set to begin in spring 2015, with Universal Pictures and Legendary releasing The Great Wall in 3D in the U.S. on Nov. 23, 2016.

This is really great casting. Now as everyone knows I am no the biggest Game of Thrones fan and I've only seen him in one film so I'm not familiar with his overall body of work. But I will say that the casting director for the show has done a great job of finding diamonds in the rough and this could be a breakout film for him. This film sounds really neat and I cannot wait to see it.
