5-29-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Columbia Pictures has debuted the second domestic trailer for Annie, opening in theaters on December 19 and starring Jamie Foxx, Quvenzhané Wallis, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, David Zayas and Cameron Diaz.

In the Will Gluck-directed December 19 release, Quvenzhané Wallis stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who's also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they'd be back for her someday, it's been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything's about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he's her guardian angel, but Annie's self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it's the other way around.

This was a really great trailer. I wasn't to high on this film or the first trailer, but this is better. The film looks to be more comedic than the original film. I'm now more excited for this film now because of this trailer.

20th Century Fox has released the trailer for The Book of Life, opening in theaters on October 17 and voiced by Diego Luna, Channing Tatum, Zoë Saldana, Ice Cube, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, Kate del Castillo, Cheech Marin, Placido Domingo, Hector Elizondo, Ana de la Reguera, Eugenio Derbez, Gabriel Iglesias, Ricardo "El Mandril" Sanchez and Danny Trejo. The animated comedy is produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Jorge Gutierrez.

The Book of Life is the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears. Rich with a fresh take on pop music favorites, The Book of Life encourages us to celebrate the past while looking forward to the future.

This is another great trailer. The film looks very interesting and you can tell Guillermo del Toro has his magical touch on the film. Honestly I wasn't really excited for the film but now with this trailer I really am excited for it now.

On the heels of yesterday's update on the status of director Roland Emmerich's much-anticipated Independence Day sequel comes some exciting news about another one of Emmerich's 1990s sci-fi hits. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures, together with Emmerich and Dean Devlin, are partnering to launch a new feature film trilogy that reimagines 1994's Stargate. The announcement was made today by Gary Barber, MGM’s Chairman and CEO. Emmerich, who directed and co-wrote the original film with Devlin, is confirmed to direct and Devlin will produce.

Word of a reboot of the 1994 film first broke last year when Emmerich said that he and creative partner Dean Devlin approached MGM about building a reboot trilogy. Emmerich co-wrote and directed the original 1994 film, which starred Kurt Russel, James Spader, Jaye Davidson, and Alexis Cruz.

At the time of its release, Stargate grossed nearly $200 million at the global box office. The franchise has since spawned three live-action television spin-offs, one animated series and two direct-to-DVD feature films.

Barber said, “We couldn’t be more excited to once again partner with Roland and Dean, the world-class creators of the original 'Stargate,' to bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations.” He added, “'Stargate' is one of the biggest titles in MGM’s vast library, and we look forward to adding this great franchise to our slate.” “The 'Stargate' universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home,” said Emmerich and Devlin.

Glickman said, “For us at MGM, there was no version of us further developing the 'Stargate' franchise without Roland and Dean at the creative helm. This is their baby, and we cannot wait to bring their reenergized universe to the legions of fans around the world.”

I'm actually excited about this. Now I'm only excited for the film and not Emmerich directing the film. I'm not really a huge fan of his films (except Independence Day). I'm looking for ward to the film but I wish the studio would just get another director.

The Captain America: The Winter Soldier directing pair of Anthony and Joe Russo have lined up a new project at Sony Pictures. Variety reports that the brothers will tackle a big screen version of Mark Greaney's 2009 novel The Gray Man. The book, the first in Greaney's "Court Gentry" series, was initially published in 2009 with the following official description:

Court Gentry is known as The Gray Man - a legend in the covert realm, moving silently from job to job, accomplishing the impossible, and then fading away. And he always hits his target. But there are forces more lethal than Gentry in the world. And in their eyes, Gentry has just outlived his usefulness. Now, he is going to prove that for him, there's no gray area between killing for a living-and killing to stay alive.

The novel was previously planned for the big screen some years ago with James Gray attached to direct and Brad Pitt rumored to be eyeing the lead role. New Regency Pictures held the screen rights at that time and had Adam Cozad (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) attached to provide the screenplay. The Russos will both write and direct The Gray Man with the hopes of launching a new big screen franchise. Palak Patel and Joe Roth are producing. The Russos remain attached to helm a third Captain America film, targeting a May 6, 2016 release.

This is really interesting news. The story sounds great and it's right up The Russo's alley. I reall enjoyed what they did with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and I'm really curious about this film and them directing it makes me a little bit excited for the film.

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures announced today that Sausage Party, the new R-rated animated comedy from writers Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, will hit theaters on June 3, 2016. It's the first film to claim that date, which places it exactly one week before Sony's own The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Sausage Party is a raunchy animated movie about one sausage’s quest to discover the truth about his existence. After falling out of a shopping cart, our hero sausage and his new friends embark on a perilous journey through the supermarket to get back to their aisles before the 4th of July sale.

From a story by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Jonah Hill, Sausage Party is directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan. It features the voices of Rogen and Hill as well as Kristen Wiig, Salma Hayek, Edward Norton, David Krumholtz, Nick Kroll, Michael Cera, James Franco, Craig Robinson, Bill Hader, Anders Holm, Paul Rudd and Danny McBride.

This sounds awesome. Now the last time the cast and production team got together we got the absolutely hilarious This is The End. Now it'll be interesting to see how this group does in the animated world , but I have really high hopes for the film and I can't wait to see it.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, which of these stories peaked your interest or was there another story that interested you? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

My Top 10 Favorite Parody Films of All-Time

A parody film is a comedy that parodies other film genres or films as pastiches, works created by imitation of the style of many different films reassembled together. Although the genre is often overlooked by critics, parody films are commonly profitable at the box office. With that being said I'm going to bring you my top 10 favorite parody films of all-time. So without further ado...

10. Scary Movie 2
ScaryMovie2.jpg

This is the very first parody film that I had ever seen I think it's just absolutely hilarious. Although many of the first film's main characters were homicide victims, Shorty (played by Marlon Wayans), Ray (played by Shawn Wayans), and Cindy (played by Anna Faris) return anyway to "re-possess" their roles for this follow-up in which four students are invited by their professor (played by Tim Curry) to his haunted mansion, Hell House, for a weekend sleep-deprivation study. Providing the sleep deprivation, however, is a series of murderous, supernatural goings-on. Scary Movie 2 has a rating of 15% on rottentomatoes.com.

9. Robin Hood: Men in Tights
RobinHoodMeninTights Poster.jpg

I love Mel Brooks's style of directing and films and just a heads up you'll see a copule more of his films on the list. Robin Hood (played by Cary Elwes) comes home after fighting in the Crusades to learn that the noble King Richard (played by Patrick Stewart) is in exile and that the despotic King John (Richard Lewis) now rules England, with the help of the Sheriff of Rottingham (played by Roger Rees). Robin Hood assembles a band of fellow patriots to do battle with John and the Sheriff, including Asneeze (played by Isaac Hayes) and his son Ahchoo (played by Dave Chappelle), the blind watchman Blinkin (played by Mark Blankfield), Will Scarlet O'Hara (played by Matthew Porretta), and Rabbi Tuckman (played by Mel Brooks). The Sheriff is eager to put Robin Hood out of business with the aid of criminal mastermind Don Giovanni (played by Dom DeLuise), but Robin soon has an ally in the royal palace when he falls for the lovely Maid Marian (played by Amy Yasbeck), whose minder Broomhilde (played by Megan Cavanagh) has uncooperatively outfitted Marian with a chastity belt. Robin Hood: Men in Tights has a rating of 48% on rottentomatoes.com.

8. Mars Attacks!
Mars attacks ver1.jpg

This film is absolutely hilarious and it's a perfect sci-fi comedy.  Flying saucers have been reliably seen over the capitals of the world, and the whole world awaits with bated breath to see what will transpire. Among those waiting is the President of the United States (played by Jack Nicholson), who is assured by his science advisor (played by Pierce Brosnan) that the coming aliens are utterly peaceful. This advice is hotly contested by the military who advises the President to annihilate them. When the aliens land, they are seen to be green, garish, and very cheerful. But appearances prove deceiving when the "friendly" aliens abruptly disintegrate the entire U.S. Congress. Hollywood notables appear in vast quantities in roles (and sub-plots) of all sizes in this zany feature. Mars Attacks! has a rating of 52% on rottentomatoes.com.

7. Austin Powers in Goldmember
Austin Powers in Goldmember.jpg

IMHO this is the best Austin Powers film in the franchise. Austin Powers in Goldmember continues the exploits of the swinging-'60s leftover Austin Powers (played by Mike Meyers), who, as the film opens, is busy critiquing a big-budget Hollywood production of his life story, replete with a 20-million-dollar star in the lead role and a slew of John Woo-style action scenes. But not far from the soundstage lurks arch nemesis Dr. Evil (played by Mike Myers), who has opened up a talent agency representing some of the industry's biggest stars -- all the while channeling their profits into a diabolical world-destruction plan with the unfortunate code name Preparation H. Dr. Evil presents a distraction to Austin by kidnapping his similarly swingin' father, Nigel Powers, and transporting him back in time to 1975. Travelling there to save his father -- and in turn win back his dad's sometimes-errant affection -- Austin comes across the alluring superspy Foxxy Cleopatra (played by Beyonce Knowles). The three of them travel back to the present day, where they join forces to battle Dr. Evil and his posse of nefarious evil-doers, including the trusty clone Mini-Me (played by Verne Troyer); his snotty son, Scott (played by Seth Green); the inimitable Fat Bastard (played by Mike Myers); and the eponymous new addition to the fold: the epidermis-obsessed, precious-metal-fortified Dutchman called Goldmember (played by Mike Myers). Austin Powers in Goldmember has a rating of 54% on rottentomatoes.com.

6. Galaxy Quest
 Galaxy Quest poster.jpg

I'm a fan of Star Trek and this film does a great job of making fun of the franchise (in a good way). in the mid-1970s, when brave if reckless Captain Peter Quincy Taggart, lovely Lieutenant Tawny Madison, and inscrutable alien Dr. Lazarus were the leaders of an interstellar law enforcement team on the TV series mnamed Galaxy Quest.  Twenty years later, the show is still in reruns, and Jason Nesmith/Captain Peter Quincy Taggart (played by Tim Allen), Gwen DeMarco/Lieutenant Tawny Madison (played by Sigourney Weaver), and Alexander Dane/Dr. Lazarus (played by Alan Rickman) prop up their sagging careers by making appearances at sci-fi conventions, where they grudgingly shake hands and give autographs for the show's socially inept following. However, it turns out that nerdy sci-fi fans aren't the only ones watching: somewhere in another solar system, a group of alien rebels living under a regime of violence and repression have picked up broadcasts of Galaxy Quest, and they aren't aware that it's fiction. They travel to Earth and encounter the Galaxy Quest cast, who figure that they're just another bunch of guys who like to dress funny. However, they soon realize that they're being hired not for another autograph-signing session but for a real-life outer space rescue mission. Galaxy Quest has a rating of 89% on rottentomatoes.com.

5. Scary Movie
Movie poster for "Scary Movie".jpg

After have never seeing the first one until after watching 2, 3 and 4, I can say that this is the best in the franchise. As you might expect, a group of teenagers -- not-terribly-bright Buffy (played by Shannon Elizabeth), her best friend Brenda (played by Regina Hall), stoner Shorty (played by Marlon Wayans), fey football player Ray (played Shawn Wayans), loudmouthed Greg (played by Lochlyn Munro), sexually overexcited Bobby (played by Jon Abrahams), and his prim girlfriend Cindy (played by Anna Faris) -- are on the run from a maniacal killer who is looking for revenge after the kids accidentally kill a man following an auto accident. They also find themselves having to contend with intrusive reporter Gail Hailstorm (played by Cheri Oteri) and eccentric high school principal Squiggly (played by David L. Lander). Scary Movie has a rating of 54% on rottentomatoes.com.

4. Spaceballs
Spaceballs.jpg

Lone Starr (played by Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog co-pilot, Barf the Mawg (played by John Candy), are content to scour the galaxy living the easy life. But they reluctantly come to the rescue when Druish Princess Vespa (played by Daphne Zuniga) is threatened by the evil Lord Dark Helmet (played by Rick Moranis), who wants to steal all of the air from her planet, Druidia. Trapped on a harsh desert world with Vespa and her robot chaperone, Dot Matrix (voice of Joan Rivers), Lone Starr and Barf are helpless to prevent Helmet from kidnapping the girl. But assistance arrives in the form of Yogurt (played by Mel Brooks), a wizard who turns Lone Starr on to a mysterious power known as The Schwartz. Catching up with Helmet just as he's transforming his spaceship into a giant vacuum cleaner in orbit around Druidia, the reluctant heroes stage a dramatic showdown. Spaceballs has a rating of 54% on rottentomatoes.com.

3. Hot Shots! Part Deux
Hot Shots part deux.jpg

This film was one of the last that Charlie Sheen had made while he was in the prime of his movie career. Topper Harley (played by Charlie Sheen), who has retreated to a Buddhist monastery after being dumped by Ramada Rodham Hayman (played by Valerie Golino). In this far-off retreat, the monks have "taken a vow of celibacy, just like their fathers and their fathers before them." But Topper bulks up and goes back into action when his superior officer, Colonel Denton Walters (played by Richard Crenna) is captured by a Saddam Hussein look-alike, missing somewhere between "Iraq and a Hard Place." Topper charges into Iraq (after barreling through a Beverly Hills barbecue) along with sexy CIA operative Michelle Rodham Huddleston (played by Brenda Bakke) in tow, his guns ablazing. Hot Shots! Part Deux has a rating of 59% on rottentomatoes.com.

2. Airplane!
Airplane!.jpg

When you have as many parody references as this film does then you may be one of the best of all-time. Alcoholic pilot Ted Striker (played by Robert Hays), who's developed a fear of flying due to wartime trauma, boards a jumbo jet in an attempt to woo back his stewardess girlfriend (played by Julie Hagerty). Food poisoning decimates the passengers and crew, leaving it up to Striker to land the plane, with the help of a glue-sniffing air traffic controller (played by Lloyd Bridges) and Striker's vengeful former captain (played by Robert Stack), who must both talk him down. Along the way, we meet a clutch of stock disaster movie passengers like the guitar-strumming nun, a sick little girl, a frightened old lady, and two African-American travelers whose "jive" has to be subtitled. Leslie Nielsen portrays the plane's doctor. Airplane! has a rating of 98% on rottentomatoes.com.

1. Blazing Saddles
Blazing saddles movie poster.jpg

Here is the last Mel Brooks film on the list and not only favorite parody film, but it is also my favorite comedy of all-time and it's in my top 5 favorite films of all-time. The film satirizes the racism obscured by myth-making Hollywood accounts of the American West, with the hero being a black sheriff in an all-white town. Blazing Saddles was nominated for 3 Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actress, Best Film editing and Best Original Song and it has a rating of 90% on rottentomatoes.com.

So ladies and gentlemen what do you think of my list and what are some of your favorite parody films of all-time? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

5-28-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

The internet community was collectively shocked this past Friday when it was revealed that director Edgar Wright had parted ways with Marvel Studios and would no longer be directing the big screen adaptation of Ant-Man, a film he had been attached to since 2006. In a joint statement, the pair said the split was due to "differences in their vision of the film."

The next day Latino-Review brought word that the reason for Wright's departure was the script for the film. Marvel Studios reportedly had some notes about the script and tasked the rewrite to someone other than Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish which resulted in a script very unlike Wright's vision for the film. Now, The Hollywood Reporter is echoing this story in a new piece but also elaborates on a few other behind-the-scenes problems, including the heads of the departments for the film leaving the project a few weeks ago when it became clear there would be delays in the start of production.

The search for a new director is currently ongoing and will likely be announced in the coming weeks as Marvel Studios have already confirmed that this delay in production will not impact the previously-set July 17, 2015 release date.  Set to star Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson and Corey Stoll, Ant-Man follows a biochemist Dr. Hank Pym using his latest discovery, a group of subatomic particles, to create a size-altering formula. Though his first self-test goes awry, he develops an instrument that helps him communicate with and control insects. Paul Rudd will play Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Michael Douglas stars as Hank Pym.

This news makes more sense to the whole ordeal. Look I hate that Edgar Wright is gone because I was really looking forward to the film but now not so much (the new director will help me determine that.). But this does make sense, A studio won't continue to help yo uif you keep falling behind so they have to take matter into their own hands to get the film bakc on track and that's what Marvel is doing in this situation.

With production well underway on the much anticipated Jurassic World, director Colin Trevorrow spoke today with /Film in an effort to set straight some rumors about the film that have popped on online. Read on for details regarding the June 12, 2015 release. Please be aware, some spoilers follow:

"'Jurassic World' takes place in a fully functional park on Isla Nublar," Trevorrow confirms. "It sees more than 20,000 visitors every day. You arrive by ferry from Costa Rica. It has elements of a biological preserve, a safari, a zoo, and a theme park. There is a luxury resort with hotels, restaurants, nightlife and a golf course. And there are dinosaurs. Real ones. You can get closer to them than you ever imagined possible. It’s the realization of John Hammond’s dream, and I think you’ll want to go there."

Trevorrow goes on to reiterate that the story takes place 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park and explains that the script came about while trying to incorporate two important themes: economic greed and mankind's relationship with modern technology. "[O]ur relationship with technology has become so woven into our daily lives," he explains. "We’ve become numb to the scientific miracles around us. We take so much for granted... What if, despite previous disasters, they built a new biological preserve where you could see dinosaurs walk the earth…and what if people were already kind of over it? We imagined a teenager texting his girlfriend with his back to a T-Rex behind protective glass. For us, that image captured the way much of the audience feels about the movies themselves. 'We’ve seen CG dinosaurs. What else you got?' Next year, you’ll see our answer."

Trevorrow goes on to correct a recent internet rumor that suggested that we'll see "good" dinosaurs in Jurassic World. "There’s no such thing as good or bad dinosaurs," he says. "There are predators and prey. The T-Rex in Jurassic Park took human lives, and saved them. No one interpreted her as good or bad. This film is about our relationship with animals, how we react to the threat they pose to our dominance on earth as a species. We hunt them, we cage them in zoos, we admire them from afar and we try to assert control over them. Chris Pratt’s character is doing behavioral research on the raptors. They aren’t trained, they can’t do tricks. He’s just trying to figure out the limits of the relationship between these highly intelligent creatures and human beings."

He also confirms that the film will feature a brand new species. "[T]here will be one new dinosaur created by the park’s geneticists," he says. "The gaps in her sequence were filled with DNA from other species, much like the genome in the first film was completed with frog DNA. This creation exists to fulfill a corporate mandate—they want something bigger, louder, with more teeth. And that’s what they get."

It's finally good to hear some Jurassic World news. The way Trevorrow describes the film makes it feel like we're going back to the sci-fi the the franchise has lacked since the first film and to also include worldly themes in today's society to make the film feel realistic. Look I'm excited to hear this and I can't wait for Jurassic World.

Although his Sam Wilson may have been repeatedly outpaced by Steve Rogers in the recent Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie is now looking to play a runner that no one is going to bet against. Deadline reports that Mackie plans on playing Jesse Owens in a still-untitled biopic scripted by George Olson. Mackie will also produce alongside Jason Spire and screenwriter Jamie Linden.

Owens famously took home four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, striking a major moral blow to Adolf Hitler's supremacist philosophy while, at the same time, becoming a powerful symbol for America's own struggles with racial inequality.

This Mackie-led project is just one of several Owens biopics in the works and it remains to be seen which one will make it to the finish line first.

If this is true then my goodness is this good casting. Anthony Mackie is one of the more underrated actors working today. Plus he's he no stranger to being in bio-pics as he play the late Tupac Shakur in 2009's Notorious. Also the story of Jesse Owens is an incredible one and I'm finally glad to see his story be told on the big-screen.

Speaking of bio-pics, The Wolverine helmer James Mangold is in talks to helm Fox 2000's big screen biopic of NFL quarterback Joe Namath, according to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter. Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, who worked with Mangold on 3:10 to Yuma, are providing the screenplay.

While other quarterbacks racked up bigger lifetime stats, Namath became the first football player to achieve rock-star status. The film will tell the story of how the golden-armed kid from Beaver Falls, Pa., became "Broadway Joe," the New York Jets quarterback and '60s cultural figure.

Really? Look I'm not huge fan of Namath (eventhough he did play at Alabama way before my time but he played for the Jets) and I honestly don't think we need a bio-pic on him. I just think that there are more interesting people to do bio-pics on such as Einstein, Da Vinci or Beethoven. Honestly I'm not excited for the film but I guess I'll give it a shot.

Universal Pictures has released the new trailer for director Tate Taylor's Get on Up, the August 1 James Brown biopic starring Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis, Lennie James, Jill Scott and Dan Aykroyd.

In his follow-up to the four-time Academy Award-nominated The Help, Taylor directs 42's Boseman as Brown. Based on the incredible life story of the Godfather of Soul, the film will give a fearless look inside the music, moves and moods of Brown, taking audiences on the journey from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.

This trailer looks great. Eventhough I'm not a huge James Brown fan, the film looks great and Chadwick Bose man could be turning in an Oscar nominated performance. I honestly can't wait to see this film.

My Review of Ted

So with A Million Ways to Die in the West being released this week, I figured it would be appropriate to review Seth McFarlane's other feature film Ted. So without further ado...

Ted poster.jpg

The film tells the story of John Bennett (played by Mark Wahlburg) , a Boston native whose childhood wish brings his teddy bear friend Ted voiced by Seth Mcfarlane) to life, but Ted keeps John and his love interest Lori Collins (played by Mila Kunis) from moving on with their lives.

I thought the film was hilarious. It's a great new take on the romances vs. friend story that we see a lot. The performances are great especially for Wahlburg who (in his scenes with Ted) is talking to nothing and gives a great performance in doing so. But personally Giovanni Ribisi's character stole the film and had the best jokes in the film (besides Ted). The cameos and supporting cast are pretty amazing (especially the scenes with Flash Gordon himself Sam Jones). Now while the film was funny, some of the jokes just didn't resonate with me and I didn't laugh at them. Also the film was a little to short and the ending was rushed a just little bit. Overall I loved Ted and I can't wait for the sequel. I give Ted a 8.5 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Ted, what would you rate it, what did you think of my review and are you excited for A Million Ways to Die in The West (I've already seen the film and it's pretty good)? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

5-27-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

With X-Men: Days of Future Past currently proving its massive box office draw, 20th Century Fox is already getting things ready to prepare for the next film, X-Men: Apocalypse, set to hit the big screen May 27, 2016. In a conversation with The Daily Beast, producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg dropped an interesting detail about the planned eighth entry in Fox's big screen X-Universe, claiming that it, too, would feature "original" cast members. "It will focus primarily on the 'First Class' cast," he says, "but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too."

I really glad to hear this news. Now would I have liked to have seen a film based around the original cast again yes, but Fox has to look towards the future and this is the way to go. If you have seen X-Men: Days of Future Past then you know one older cast member that will be in the X-Men: Apocalypse. But overall I'm excited to hear the news.

Although it sounded last week like Gravity and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban helmer Alfonso Cuaron was planning on returning to the Wizarding World for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Global Post today has an update straight from Cuaron himself who now reveals that he'll be passing on the director's chair this time around. "I have a lot of love for that universe," Cuaron says, "and I tremendously admire J.K. Rowling, but today, for the present, projects based around lots of visual effects don't attract me. I'm coming out of a five-year process of doing visual effects and now I sort of want to clean my palate of that a little bit."

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, based on J.K. Rowling's world of witches and wizards and inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook of the same name, will follow the adventures of the book's fictitious author, Newt Scamander. The first in a planned trilogy set in the Wizarding World, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted "Harry Potter" fans. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the "Harry Potter" books or seen the films, but Newt's story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry's gets underway. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set for release on November 18, 2016.

I'm a little disappointed in the news. I love Cuaron's work (if you haven't seen Children of Men go watch it now) but I understand what he's  saying. Look he's been doing a lot of visually stunning films over the past few years and I can see why he wants to take a break from it. He''l be back he just doesn't want to get burnt out on it to the point where he''l never do one again.

Plans for Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight are back on track, according to a story today at Showbiz 411. They report that the Django Unchained helmer is currently working on a rewrite of the western and has plans to put it before cameras this November with the same cast from the screenplay's recent live-reading. That's Zoe Bell, Bruce Dern, Walton Goggins, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen, James Remar, Tim Roth, Kurt Russell and Amber Tamblyn.

Although confirmation of the involvement of the above talent is still likely some time off, it appears that Christoph Waltz (who was rumored in January to have had a part written specifically for him) will not be appearing. He won Academy Awards for his performances in both Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained.

This is great news. I know the script was leaked and if I was Tarantino I would be pissed off as well. But now that things have cooled down I'm glad to see the project back on track. Tarantino is my favorite director of all-time and I'm really excited for this film.

Johnny Depp has plans to play one of history's most famous magicians. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Depp will take on the role of Harry Houdini in Lionsgate's upcoming The Secret Life of Houdini, to be directed by Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest, RED 2).

First announced in 2009, the big screen project is to be based on the 2006 book of the same name by William Kalush and Larry Sloman. Published in 2006, it is officially described as follows: Since his death eighty-eight years ago, Harry Houdini’s life has been chronicled in books, in film, and on television. Now, in this groundbreaking biography, renowned magic expert William Kalush and bestselling writer Larry Sloman team up to find the man behind the myth. Drawing from millions of pages of research, they describe in vivid detail the passions that drove Houdini to perform ever-more-dangerous feats, his secret life as a spy, and a pernicious plot to subvert his legacy.

"The Secret Life of Houdini" traces the arc of the master magician’s life from desperate poverty to worldwide fame—his legacy later threatened by a group of fanatical Spiritualists led by esteemed British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Initiating the reader along the way into the arcane world of professional magic, Kalush and Sloman decode a life based on deception, providing an intimate and riveting portrayal of Houdini, the man and the legend.

Seriously? Look I'm all for a Houdini film, but not with Johnny Depp. His career has really gone south and Hasn't really had a great film since Sweeney Todd. If he makes this film as a cooky character then he'll have another bomb on his hands, but if he takes it serious and actually tries then the film will be great.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the indie hit of 2002, has a sequel in the works. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Nia Vardalos, who wrote and starred in the original, will return alongside star John Corbett for a story that catches up on on Toula and Ian more than a decade into their marriage. Currently without an official title or an attached director, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is said to revolve around a new wedding that reunites the extended family of the original.

I'm not surprised about this news. I absolutely loved My Big Fat Greek Weeding and I'm glad we are getting a sequel. Now so may say that the film is to little to late, but in all honesty this is the right amount of time to revisit the characters and how the marriage has gone over the past 12 years.
