My Top 10 Movies of the First Half of 2013

With the first half  of 2013 already over its time that I bring you all My top movies of 2013 so far. There have been a lot of movies and this list was really hard to make and I know some of you are going to ask why didn't this movie make it or why did this movie make it, well these are the movies that I was intrigued by and enjoyed a lot (one of which I just watched like 2 days ago) and like I said 2013 in film has been pretty good so far and there are plenty more movies to come in the 2nd half of the year. So without further ado here is the list....

10. Much Ado About Nothing-
File:MuchAdo.jpg

This film is based of the play of the same name from William Shakespeare and it also mimics the play completely except for the setting. The film absolutely made me die laughing and I would not be surprised if this film gets a lot of Oscar Buzz come February.  The film has a 83% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

                 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk5kkLNPg8g

   9. Mud-
File:Mud poster.jpg

This film had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.   This is also another film that I believe will get some Oscar buzz, especially McConaughey's performance, he definitely deserves not only a Oscar nomination but an Oscar win as well. The film has a 98% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

   8. Warm Bodies-
File:Warm Bodies Theatrical Poster.jpg

This actually one of the best zombie films ever and it really surprised me . The film brought another take on the zombie genre and it was really good and could contend for one of the best films i will see this year.  The film has an 81% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

                 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wH3GD251Z4

   7. The Hangover Part 3-
File:The Hangover Part 3.JPG

Ah the Wolfpack is back again, this time with no hangover.  I thought the film was hilarious and I was absolutely dying while laughing and the mid-credits scene is worth sticking around for. The film however only holds a a 19% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

                     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96TelFMZwHc

   6. Man of Steel-
Superman, bearing his traditional red and blue costume, is shown flying towards the viewer, with the city Metropolis below. The film's title, production credits, rating and release date is written underneath.

This rebooted attempt of Superman is one of the best movies of the year and brings us a much darker tone then we've ever seen before.  Henry Cavil played an awesome Superman and Micheal Shannon's performance as General Zod was spectacular. The film has a 56% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

                                        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlOF03DUoWc

   5. This is the End-

This film absolutely had me rolling in the floor laughing.  I loved how the actors were playing themselves and the films ending is one that will last throughout the ages. The film has a 84% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

                                                   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNs0vQgCWY0&oref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DMNs0vQgCWY0&has_verified=1

  4. Monster's University-
File:Monsters University poster 3.jpg

Take a trip back in time to when star Monsters, Inc. employees Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) and James P. "Sulley" Sullivan (voice of John Goodman) were just two promising young students at Monsters University in this frightfully fun Disney/Pixar prequel. This film is great for the whole family and I recommend it to everyone. The film has a 78% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

                        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBzPioph8CI

   3. The Place Beyond The Pines-
File:The Place Beyond the Pines Poster.jpg

IDerek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines, Ryan Gosling plays Luke, a drifter who makes a living doing motorcycle stunts in a traveling carnival.  This is another film that I see getting some oscar buzz and I wouldn't be surprised if both Ryan Gosling and Bradley Copper are both nominated as they both give the performances of their lives. The film has a 82% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

                           http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhb2F5df4Vg

   2. Star Trek Into Darkness-
File:StarTrekIntoDarkness FinalUSPoster.jpg

The Star Trek franchise continues with this follow-up to 2009's J.J. Abrams-directed reboot. Abrams returns to direct from a script by Damon Lindelof and the writing team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Now while the film isn't is good as 2009's Star Trek it still holds up and Cumberbatch's performance is worthy of an Oscar nomination. The film has a  87% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

                                 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeLp2qr2iCg

   1. Iron Man 3-
File:Iron Man 3 theatrical poster.jpg

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) wrestles with his inner demons while contending with monsters of his own creation in this sequel from writer/director Shane Black. This film was a great way for Marvel to kick it's Phase 2 set of movies and hopes to keep the momentum going into Thor 2, Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy all leading up to The Avengers 2. The film has a 78% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

So ladies and Gentlemen what do you think of the list, do you agree or disagree with my top 10, and what are your Top 10 films of the year so far? Let me know in the comments and let your voice be heard.

My Top 10 Comedy Movies of All-Time

Comedy is a genre of film in which the main emphasis is on humour. These films are designed to entertain the audience through amusement, and most often work by exaggerating characteristics of real life for humorous effect. Films in this style traditionally have a happy ending (the black comedy being an exception). Comedy, unlike other film genres, puts much more focus on individual stars, with many former stand-up comics transitioning to the film industry due to their popularity. While many comic films are lighthearted stories with no intent other than to amuse, others contain political or social commentary. I'm going to bring My Top 10 Comedy Movies of All-Time. Now as with all of my top 10 lists these are not the greatest comedies of all-time, these are movies that literally bust my gut open with laughter. So without further ado................

        10. BASEketBall-
File:Baseketball.jpg

If you want to make fun of professional sports then this is the movie to watch. The movie comes to us from David Zucker who brought us The Naked Gun franchise, Airplane (a movie you'll see  a little later in the list) and the past 3 Scary Movie installments. The movie stars South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone (as childhood friends Joe "Coop" Cooper and Doug Reamer respectively) as they decide to come up with their own sport in the wake of professional sports becoming boring and unoriginal. This is the only movie in which Parker or Stone did not write or direct (personally the film would have been even funnier if they had).

             9. The 40 Year-Old Virgin-
File:40-Year-OldVirginMoviePoster.jpg

This movie became an instant classic when it was released back in 2005. The movie stars Steve Carell as Andy Stitzer as he tries to lose his virginity at the ripe old age of 40. The movie also stars Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen and Jane Lynch. It comes to us from Judd Apatow who has brought us comedies such as Superbad, Anchorman (a film you'll see later), Talladega Nights, Step Brothers and many many more.

8. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb-
File:Drstrangelove1sheet-.jpg

One of the greatest films ever made comes to us from one of the greatest directors in history Stanley Kubrick. It follows several story arcs such as a United States Air Force General who has ordered a nuclear strike on the Soviet Union, the President of The United States, his advisers and his Joint Chiefs of staffs and a Royal Air Force officer as they try to recall the air strike, and it also follows one of the air crews as they deliver the bomb. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Director, and Picture. The film is a classic just for the simple fact of it coming out just as The Cold War started.

            7. Airplane!-
File:Airplane!.jpg

This film is the one that glorified the spoof/parody film genre. This is also another David Zucker film. It takes a stab at making fun of disaster movies and it mainly takes from the central storylines of Airport 1975 and Zero Hour!. It is known loosely for its gags and puns as well as its memorable quotes. It also has a sequel entitled Airplane! 2.

            6. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy-
File:Movie poster Anchorman The Legend of Ron Burgundy.jpg

Another Judd Apatow movie, Anchorman tells the story of fictional 5-time Emmy Award winning anchorman Ron Burgandy (played by Will Ferrell) and his all-male action news team made up of field reporter Brian Fantana (played by Paul Rudd), weatherman Brick Tamland (played by Steve Carell), and sports anchor Champion "Champ" Kind (played by David Koechner)  in 1970's San Diego as they deal with the addition of a new female co-anchor Veronica Corningstone (played by Christina Applegate). A sequel is post-production an is set to come out in December of this year.

   5. Dumb and Dumber-

One of the best buddy films of all-time, Dumb and Dumber literally puts a whole new meaning into the word stupidity. The film tells to story of two friends Lloyd Christmas (played by Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (played by Jeff Daniels) as the go on a cross-country trip to return a briefcase left behind by a woman named Mary Swanson (played by Lauren Holly) that Lloyd (Carrey) has dropped off at a local airport. The film also spawned an animated series, a prequel entitled Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (a film that everyone would really like to forget) and just recently announced sequel entitled Dumb and Dumber To (no that is not a typo).

   4. The Big Lebowski-
File:Biglebowskiposter.jpg

Ah all I can say about this movie is that "I am the Dude". The film stars Jeff Bridges as Jeff Lebowski who is a slacker and an avid bowler.  After a case of mistaken identity, a millionaire's wife has been kidnapped and Lebowski (Bridges) is forced to gather and deliver the ransom money to secure the woman. But the plan goes haywire as one of Lebowski's friends Walter Schobeck (played by John Goodman) decides to keep the money for himself. This movie is considered the greatest cult classic of all-time.

 3. The Hangover-
File:Hangoverposter09.jpg

One of the biggest surprises of 2009, The Hangover tells the story of 3 friends Phil (played by Bradley Cooper), Stu (played by Ed Helms) and Alan (played by Zack Galifianakis) as they travel to Las Vegas to have a bachelor party for their friend Doug (played by Justin Bartha). Things go from good to bad as the morning after the first night of partying leaves the three friends hungover and cannot remember anything from the night before. This sets in motion a manhunt for Doug as they have lost him and cannot find him. The movie spawned two sequels The Hangover Part 2 (I wish it had never happened or existed) and the recently released The Hangover Part 3.

                   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSYlxzCHvKg

   2. Animal House-

Animal House is widely considered one of the greatest comedies of all-time. It tells the story of the dysfunctional  Delta's of Delta Tau Kai that attend Faber College as they live the college lifestyle through constant partying and intoxication. The film comes from several magazines of National Lampoon. Also the film is considered great simply for being able to make a funny movie with mostly completely unknown actors aside from the late John Belushi.

             http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7vtWB4owdE

      1. Blazing Saddles-
File:Blazing saddles movie poster.jpg

Not only is this one of the greatest comedies of all-time but it also considered one of the greatest films of all-time. Blazing Saddles mostly satirizes the racism obscured by myth-making Hollywood accounts in the Old American West with the main character being a black sheriff in an all white town. It also has many other funny jabs at pop culture in 1974. This is probably Mel Brook's best and funniest film, it is also his most successful receiving 4 Academy Award Nominations including Best Actress, Editing, Original Sound and Music.

Monsters University Review

      Monsters University poster 3.jpg

Monster's University the prequel to the 2001 Disney Pixar hit Monster's Inc. shows us what Mike and Sulley did before they became friends and worked at Monsters Inc. Billy Crystal and John Goodman (who play Mike and Sulley) face pretty difficult challenges being 65 and 61 years old respectively and playing 18 year old college freshman versions of there characters. In the story both of our characters arrive to the illustrious Monsters University with dreams of becoming professional scarers. At the beginning of the film our characters are shown as mortal enemies and they are always trying to outdo each other in various aspects of the college lifestyle. After a mishap in class they are both thrown out of the scare program and other campus activities. With a chance to prove themselves in attempt to reenter the scare program, they enter the scare games with the main goal to scare mechanical children by using different scare tactics. For them to enter though they must band together with a group of outcasts in the fraternity Oozma Kappa.

The film also shows us how the Randall-Sulley feud started and it also brings back familiar characters like Roz and The Abominable Snowman, but the film does drag on for a little bit longer than it should. While the film does not rank with the Best Picture nominated Up and Toy Story 3, nor does stack up against the second level films of The Incredibles, A Bug's Life, WALL-E, Finding Nemo and its predecessor Monster's Inc, it does however fall into the third tier films of Cars and Ratatouille, and it far exceeds Cars 2 and Brave. With all of this being said I had a blast during the movie and I literally almost peed my pants during the first competition of the scare games. Its a fun movie for the whole family to see and everybody will get a kick of it, I give this film a 9 out of 10 and I predict an $65 million box office weekend in the US.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Monster's University, do you agree or disagree with my review, where would you rank the film in the list of Pixar films and what are your predictions for the box office. Let me know in the comments and let your voice be heard.

My Top 10 Favorite Horror Movies of All-Time

Horror movies are made to scare the living daylights out of us, make us pee our pants and possibly haunt our dreams and so here recently I have watched a few of them. In today's films though horror movies really aren't scary anymore, they have more of a gory comedy feel to it. Well if we go back into the movie vault a little bit we can find an abundance of really scary movies. Today I'm going to bring you my top 10 Horror movies of All-time (plus when you see the list, put yourself back into a theater when these movies came out and think of how scary they were then). So without further ado here's the list.

               10. Saw
The line "How much blood would you shed to stay alive?" hovers over a young woman trapped in one of the film's most featured traps, the "reverse bear trap"

Now some of you are going to roll your eyes and say that the Saw movie franchise isn't scary it's just gory (don't gt me wrong they are), but the first is the scariest film of the franchise. It tells the story of Adam (played by Leigh Whannell) and Lawrence (played by Cary Elwes) as they are trapped in a bathroom and they must figure out why they are the bathroom and who is the mysterious Jigsaw (played by Tobin Bell). The is viewed as the best of the franchise and it made Lionsgate some pretty good money. The film was granted a $1 million budget and it made $103 million at the box office and it spawned 6 sequels .

            9. The Omen (1976)
File:Omen ver4.jpg

This film actually creeped  a lot of people out and made people wonder if they should adopt kids. The film tells the story of Robert and Katherine Thorn (played by Gregory Peck and Lee Remick) as they adopt a child after their newborn dies shortly after birth. At the suggestion of the hospitals priest (played by Martin Benson) the couple adopts a young boy that they name Damien (played by Harvey Spencer Stephens). At the beginning Damien seems like an ordinary child, but after a while a lot of strange things begin to happen and Robert (Peck) discovers that his child may be the Antichrist and he must figure out a way to stop him. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards including Best Original Score and Original Song, while winning one (Best Original Score). The movie also had two sequels (which came out in 1978 and 1981) and a remake which coincidentally came out on June 6th, 2006 or 6-6-06

You can actually find this movie on Netflix or on YouTube just copy and paste the link below into your browser

            8. The Thing (1982)
File:ThingPoster.jpg

This film comes to us from the man who created the Halloween franchise so you automatically know it is going to be pretty scary. The story is about a group of American researchers in Antarctica and they discover the remains of there Norwegian counterparts base that has been burnt to the ground. They discover the remains of a humanoid corpse and quickly the corpse mutates and things get worse from there. The film stars Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, and Keith David (as MacReady, Blair, and Childs). From this film a sequel was made in 2011 which focused on the Norwegian team. You can also find the movie on Netflix

            7. Nosferatu

Now some of you have probably never heard of this movie and that's not surprising since it came out in 1922. This film is a silent film but it is considered the movie that started the Horror film genre. Nosferatu is pretty much the German unauthorized version of Dracula except with some of the names and details changed. With it being unauthorized the rightful heirs to the story of Dracula sued the company that distributed it and was court ordered to destroy every copy. However one copy did survive and the film lives on as a cinematic piece of art.

If you would like to check the film out (which I encourage that you do) you can find the full movie in the link below

            6. It

Now this film absolutely haunts my dreams. Based on the book by Stephen King, it tells the story of 7 local Maine kids as they fight Pennywise the Clown (played by Tim Curry) who has went on a murdering spree on innocent children. After one confrontation with the clown, he comes back 30 years later to take on the children (now as grown-ups) to settle the score. The film did get some bad and good reviews, but Tim Curry's take as Pennywise received universal critical acclaim for a perfect representation of the character from the book.

You can watch the full movie in the link below. Also in the link there is a scene in the movie that was taken out due to copyright claims, so if you want to know about the scene please read the description in the video.

            5. The Exorcist
File:Exorcist ver2.jpg

The Exorcist was a controversial film in 1973, but is considered one of the scariest movies of all-time. The film is about a girl named Regan (played by Linda Blair) who becomes demonically possessed and two priests (played by Jason Miller and Max von Sydow) are brought in to perform an exorcism. The film received a lot of criticism because of Linda Blair only being 14 at the time and her use of foul language. It also received ten Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Sound, Adapted Screenplay, Director, Cinematography, Editing, and Art Direction while winning two (Best Sound and Adapted Screenplay). There were four sequels made (1977, 1990, 2000,and 2004) and one prequel in 2005.

             4. The Evil Dead (1981)
File:Evil dead ver1.jpg

The Evil Dead is probably one of the first movies to really show gore, demonic possession and horror in the same film. Its about 5 friends who are on a spring break trip to a cabin in rural Tennessee. Things start out like any trip but when the group ventures to the basement, they find out things are not what they really seem. One by one each member of the group becomes possessed except for Ash Williams (played by Bruce Campbell) and he must find a way to fight back against the demonic possession. The film is considered a cult classic, it also spawned two sequels and a 2013 remake.

You can watch the movie on Netflix or you can watch it in the link below but you must verify you are 18 by signing into your YouTube account or by quickly setting up an account.

           3. The Shining
File:The Shining poster.jpg

Another film adapted from a Stephen King novel, The Shining is a suspenseful horror story that can strike fear into a person's soul. The film is about a writer named Jack Torrance (played by Jack Nicholson) who has been asked to be winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel and he believes that the peace, quite and solitude will help him work on his new book. He brings along his wife Wendy and son Danny (played by Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd respectively). Cabin fever starts to set in on Jack's mind and he starts to become crazy, also Danny has ESP where he can see horrific things even the past horror of the hotel. This film is mostly remembered for the creepy line of "redrum" which spelled backwards is murder.

            2. Psycho (1960)
File:Psycho (1960).jpg

Made by the late and great Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho took the horror genre to a whole new level. After a girl has been murdered in a Phoenix hotel an investigation begins into the mysterious murder and disappearance of the girl's body. The film received four Academy Award nominations including Best Director, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, and Art Direction. The film is widely considered the greatest horror movie of all-time.

            1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
File:TheTexasChainSawMassacre-poster.jpg

My scariest horror film of all-time literally scares me every single time and it is considered as the film that started the slasher-horror genre. When a trip goes bad wrong, five stranded friends must ban together to survive the night from the gruesome Leatherface who makes furniture out of people's skin. At first the film was banned in several countries for its graphic content. The film  spawned four sequels one of which was released in 2013 and a straight remake in 2003 with a sequel of its own.

Now some of you are wondering what do these numbers mean for the movies and movie studios going forward. Well here are five things that I have learned from these numbers.

  1. I said in my Man of Steel Preview that it would make $100 million this past weekend. Well not  including midnight showings for Thursday night it made $113 million, so I think I got pretty close.
  2. Iron Man 3 still continues to make a little bit of money and its be out for almost 2 months
  3. After Earth is a complete and utter failure. It had a budget of roughly $130 million and adding in totals from around the world its made $102 million. Some of you say well if it gets to $150 million its a success, well number 1 its not going to get $150 million and number 2 if it ever did get there the studio still loses money because you have take out money for the cast and crew, take out money for marketing, and all togehter this film will cost Columbia at least $80 million with a profit of $50 million and no possible sequel or prequel.
  4. If "This is the End" had a been in a few more theaters  there is not a doubt in my mind it would have crossed the $50 million mark on a $32 million budget in its first week.
  5. The Purge 2 has been confirmed and is in development. Not surprising as it has made an unexpected $51 million on a $3 million budget
Now for some weekend movie news
  1. Joss Whedon has confirmed in an interveiw this weekend that Tom Hiddleston "aka Loki" will not return for Avengers 2 simply saying "Loki is not there".
  2. We've finally found out who John C. Riley is playing in the upcoming "Marvel's: The Guardians of the Galaxy". Riley will play Nova Corps leader Rhomann Dey.
  3. Arnold is back. Schwarzenegger stated that he will be apart of The Expendables 3 and he will also be returning for the upcoming Terminator 5.

Man of Steel Review

Well everybody I have seen Man of Steel and I'm here to bring you my review.

As I said in my Man of Steel preview I didn't particularly like Superman as a comic book character (and I still don't), but I do have to say that I loved Man of Steel. It was action-packed, it had a lot of emotional moments, and overall it was just a great movie to see. Now I'm not going to give a traditional film because I don't want to give away too much to the people that haven't seen it yet. With that being I will instead tell you the things Like/Loved and what I Disliked/Hated, this way if you have seen it we can discuss how you felt about Man of Steel. So without further  ado......

           Likes

  1. I loved the fact that we actually got to see Krypton. In other movies we are just shown Superman leaving and Krypton exploding.
  2. I loved Russell Crowe, Micheal Shannon, and Kevin Costner's performances as Jor-el, General Zod, and Johnathan Kent respectively. I especially loved Shannon's performance and I think he definitely should be considered for an Academy Award nomination.
  3. I loved all of the action. I was highly entertained and the movie kept me on the edge of my seat.
  4. I loved Zack Snyder's nonlinear storytelling and the usage of flashbacks
  5. I loved that the movie showed a LexCorp and WayneTech signs stating that Batman and Lex Luthor do exist in this rebooted movie universe.
  6. I loved the fight scene between Zod and Superman (especially the ending)

           Dislikes

  1. I hated Amy Adams as Lois Lane. I personally didn't feel that she embodied who Lois lane is and she seemed pretty stiff
  2. I felt that eventhough the action was great, I got really tired of having CGI just thrown at me left and right.
  3. I felt that the battle with the World Engine wasn't necessary.
  4. I felt at the end of the movie that I couldn't see a Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, or even a Batman fit into this type of a universe and it makes me really wonder how a Justice League movie will work.
  5. Finally the thing that I absolutely hated the most was at the end of the movie when Superman became Clark Kent reporter for the Daily Planet. If you are going to go with this dark of a movie you cannot have Superman become Clark Kent the reporter.
With all of this being said I tried not to give away too much but I feel that I gave enough for you all that haven't seen it to check out the movie for yourself. I really enjoyed the movie and it had some minor flaws and unnecessary details but overall I give this movie an 8.5/10. I highly recommend the film to everybody.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you thin of Man of Steel, was it what you expected, and what did you like or dislike about the movie? Let me know in the comments and let your voice be heard.
