12-23-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Looks like the national outcry to release Seth Rogen’s The Interview in wake of the hack attack against Sony has resulted in Christmas Day showings of the film in select theaters, including both The Alamo Drafthouse in Dallas and The Plaza in Atlanta. Drafthouse founder Tim League took to Twitter to announce that it is one of the few theaters to show The Interview, which is especially triumphant after Paramount cancelled showings of Team America: World Police the theater was originally going to show in lieu of the film. The Plaza announced its screenings and showtimes on Facebook. "Breaking news: Sony has authorized screenings of THE INTERVIEW on ChristmasDay. We are making shows available within the hour. #Victory — Tim League (@timalamo)". It’s safe to say Sony has been emboldened by the support, since The Hollywood Reporter indicates that a day-and-date VOD release may also happen. We will keep you updated as the story unfolds, including hopefully, a full list of theaters where it will play. In the action-comedy The Interview, Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show ‘Skylark Tonight.’ When they discover that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the most unlikely candidates, to ‘take out’ Kim Jong-un.

Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Entertainment, made an official statement on the matter, confirming that select theaters will screen the film Christmas day and that plans are underway to expand both theatrically and potentially via VOD (via Deadline):  “We have never given up on releasing ‘The Interview’ and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day. At the same time, we are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience. I want to thank our talent on ‘The Interview’ and our employees, who have worked tirelessly through the many challenges we have all faced over the last month. While we hope this is only the first step of the film’s release, we are proud to make it available to the public and to have stood up to those who attempted to suppress free speech.”

This is great news to hear. I know there has been a lot of controversy over this film, but now that it's getting released maybe a lot of it will simmer down. I think that this is the right approach for Sony to go with because it will give people the opportunity who want to see it on the big screen the chance to do so and the others will wait for VOD. All I know is that I'm this is happening and I cannot wait to see the film.

Following word yesterday that four-time The Fast and the Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin is set to direct the upcoming Star Trek 3 (or 13 depending on your point of view), Paramount Pictures has officially announced a release date of July 8, 2016. 2016, as Trekkies are well aware, marks the 50th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s enduring sci-fi franchise. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana and John Cho are all expected to reprise their roles as the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Plot details have not yet been revealed, although Orci stated earlier this year that his plan was to set the action in deep space, unlike the relatively Earth-centric J.J. Abrams films. There is no word currently on whether the film will move forward with the same screenplay scripted by Orci, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne or seek a new draft. Although Star Trek 3 is the first film to claim the July 8, 2016 release date, the film will follow both the Steven Spielberg directed Roald Dahl adaptation The BFG (starring Mark Rylance and Ruby Barnhill) and David Yates’ take on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan (starring Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou, Christoph Waltz, Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie), which both hit the big screen July 1, 2016.

This is a really solid release date. It's a little bit later than the previous two films, but right now it's the only film on the date it is going to make a lot of money. Like I said yesterday my only worry is with Justin Lin directing the film, but hopefully he can continue the trend of great star Trek Movies and help honor the 50 year tradition of Star Trek.

Warner Bros. Pictures has officially released the trailer for Entourage which you can check out below. Written and directed by series creator Doug Ellin, the big-screen version of the hit show stars Kevin Connolly, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara and Jeremy Piven in their original roles, as well as Billy Bob Thornton and Haley Joel Osment as Larsen and Travis McCredle. The film also reunites series regulars Perrey Reeves as Ari Gold’s wife, Emmanuelle Chriqui as Sloan, and Rhys Coiro as Billy Walsh. Entourage is produced by Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Ellin, with Wayne Carmona serving as executive producer. The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Steve Fierberg, production designer Chase Harlan, and costume designer Olivia Miles-Payne, all of whom worked on the long-running HBO series. Movie star Vincent Chase (Grenier), together with his boys, Eric (Connolly), Turtle (Ferrara) and Johnny (Dillon), are back… and back in business with super agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold (Piven). Some of their ambitions have changed, but the bond between them remains strong as they navigate the capricious and often cutthroat world of Hollywood. Entourage will open in theaters nationwide on June 5, 2015.

This was a great trailer. Now let start off and say that I haven't seen any episodes of the tv show so I know absolutely nothing about the characters, but I have heard great things about the show which make me want to watch it. From the small snippets I have seen form the show it looks like the film is headed in that same direction and I cannot wait to see it.

Following a first version last month, Walt Disney Pictures has released a new trailer for McFarland, USA and you can check it out below. Inspired by the 1987 true story, McFarland, USA follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. Coach White and the McFarland students have a lot to learn about each other but when White starts to realize the boys’ exceptional running ability, things begin to change. Soon something beyond their physical gifts becomes apparent—the power of family relationships, their unwavering commitment to one another and their incredible work ethic. With grit and determination, the unlikely band of runners eventually overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well. Along the way, Coach White realizes that his family finally found a place to call home and both he and his team achieve their own kind of American dream. The Walt Disney Pictures release  stars Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Morgan Saylor, Martha Higareda, Michael Aguero, Sergio Avelar, Hector Duran, Rafael Martinez, Johnny Ortiz, Carlos Pratts, Ramiro Rodriguez, Danny Mora,Valente Rodriguez, Vanessa Martinez and Chris Ellis and is directed by Niki Caro with screenplay by Christopher Cleveland & Bettina Gilois and Grant Thompson, and story by Cleveland & Gilois.

This was a nice trailer. It had real heart and it had a good blend of comedy as well. This film however looks like it will be another Million Dollar Arm (which I thought was ok), but hopefully this film can do better a be a great sports film.

Twentieth Century Fox has just brought online the trailer for director George Tillman Jr.’s (Faster, Men of Honor) upcoming adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ recent novel, The Longest Ride and you can check it out below. Starring Britt Robertson (The First Time, Tomorrowland), Scott Eastwood (Gran Torino, Fury), Jack Huston (American Hustle, Outlander), Oona Chaplin (Quantum of Solace, What If) and Alan Alda (“M*A*S*H”, The Aviator), The Longest Ride centers on the star-crossed love affair between Luke, a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback, and Sophia, a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City’s art world. As conflicting paths and ideals test their relationship, Sophia and Luke make an unexpected connection with Ira, whose memories of his own decades-long romance with his beloved wife deeply inspire the young couple. Spanning generations and two intertwining love stories, The Longest Ride aims to explore the challenges and infinite rewards of enduring love. Featuring an adapted screenplay by Craig Bolotin, The Longest Ride is produced by Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Theresa Park, Robert Teitel and Sparks himself. Look for it to hit theaters April 10, 2015.

I hate the trailer. I bet you all can guess why and if you can't well then let me tell you. It's because every Nicholas Sparks film is the exact same (so are the books but they are more interesting). The only good thing about the film is that it comes out in April so I can get it out the way quickly. All I know the last Nicholas Sparks film The Best of Me is currently my least favorite film of the year and hopefully this film can do better than its predecessor.
