12-1-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Looks like Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are getting an even mightier sequel, as the UK’s Daily Mail is reporting that Joss Whedon & Co. will be re-assembling the Avengers: Age of Ultron cast in January for two weeks of reshoots at England’s Pinewood Studios. According to the tabloid, the additional shooting is being mounted in order to add “a bit more kick-ass on an extravagant scale.” Translation: more action, beefed-up set pieces or perhaps just an extra punch or two here and there for spice. They specify that Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Scarlett Johansson and –most interestingly- Tom Hiddleston have all been asked to make themselves available.

If you recall, Idris Elba spilled the beans in November that he would be returning as watchful Heimdall alongside Hiddleston’s Loki in Age of Ultron, and now that the cat (or is that the raven?) is out of the bag it seems Whedon has resigned himself to give the fans what the want, i.e. all Loki all the time. While more Hiddleston is always good news, fans shouldn’t take the reshoots as a sign that the film is at all in trouble, although there have been rumblings that Marvel’s new golden boys Joe and Anthony Russo might take over the franchise (Avengers: Infinity War) from Whedon after their tour of duty on Captain America: Civil War. This would no doubt sadden fans who want to see Whedon pay off what he started with villain Thanos in the first Avengers, including The Mad Titan’s Shakespearean courtship of Mistress Death.

In the May 2015 release, when Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

This is pretty interesting news. Now sometimes re-shoots can be bad signs and sometimes they can be good signs. If Marvel isn't happy with a couple of scenes them I'm ok with them taking another look and possibly add scenes with other characters. The movies has at least 4 months of post-production before as wells as 5 months before the film is released so there is no cause for concern about the film.

Absolute Radio (via Empire) spoke with Serkis who once again confirmed that is indeed his voice in the trailer, and reacted to the news that many theorized Benedict Cumberbatch was the voice. ABC’s Good Morning America made it a good morning to be a fan of a galaxy far far away today, as the show confirmed what many have been speculating on since the Friday trailer debut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens… Andy Serkis is the voice narrating the teaser. The show laid to rest those pesky Benedict Cumberbatch rumors (but would not reveal their source), although other sites including HitFix had been confirming Serkis over the weekend, not to mention that fans of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes no doubt recognize the similarity of those signature gravelly pipes to the mighty Caesar. Serkis is currently seeking awards consideration for his motion capture role in Dawn.

While GMA was able to drop easily obtainable tidbits, including how many seconds of actual footage (39 seconds) and how many words (15 words) are in the trailer (which has been viewed by more than 40 million people online in 3-days), Jedi News was able to dig up info on who Serkis is actually playing. The rumor states Serkis actually has TWO roles in The Force Awakens, one a part of a “group of unbelievably athletic and acrobatic motion capture characters” also played by parkour expert Pip Anderson and Crystal Clarke. The other is a “pivotal role in the first act story arc that entwines with Daisy Ridley’s backstory that may have more to it than it seems in the first instance.” Based on the concept art leaks that have made their way online, we would hazard to guess that this second character may be the small blue turban-sporting alien confronted by Daisy Ridley’s character in several drawings. The nature of the trailer voice and stature of the character could lead us to believe this is a new Yoda-like figure, possibly an ex-Jedi in hiding since Order 66, though that is pure speculation at this point. There’s also been scuttlebutt that Serkis’ studio The Imaginarium has been pioneering new methods of utilizing performance capture for on-set animatronics as opposed to CGI, and this might be one of those characters. Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong and Miltos Yerolemou, with the J.J. Abrams-directed film debuting in theaters on December 18, 2015.

This really great and interesting news to hear. First off I just want to tell everyone I told you so because my first initial and only thought when I watched the trailer was that the voiceover was done by Andy Serkis and it's great that we finally have a confirmation. The second part of the story also. makes sense and really goes along with all of the rumors that have been circulating about Andy Serkis. One character is going to have a very small part in the film possibly and animal like species and the other will be this trilogy's Yoda or perhaps a relative of Yoda and that gets me really excited. I have constantly watched this trailer since its debut and I'll continue to watch it until the film comes out.

Walt Disney Studios has debuted, via PopSugar, a new character poster for director Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming Cinderella. This one features Cate Blanchett as Cinderella’s wicked stepmother, flanked by stepsisters played by Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera. Also starring Lily James, Richard Madden, Stellan Skarsgård, Derek Jacobi and Helena Bonham Carter, Cinderella follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an employee at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears as if her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming “Kit.” Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever. Cinderella hits theaters March 13, 2015.

Cinderella Cate Blanchett

I really like this poster, It really gives off a 14th or 15th century feel to it and that's the types of films that director Kenneth Branagh is best at. Right now I have mixed feelings about the film right now so I'm just going to have to wait and see.

There’s good news and bad news today for Kickboxer fans. Unfortunately, previously-announced star Tony Jaa (Ong-bak, Furious 7) has dropped out of the upcoming reboot. Replacing him, however, is none other than original Kickboxer star Jean-Claude Van Damme! JCVD will play an updated version of the original film’s Master Chow. Directed by John Stockwell (Cat Run), the new Kickboxer follows Eric and Kurt Sloan, descendants of a well-known Venice, California-based family of martial artists. Kurt has always been in older brother, Eric’s shadow, as he lacks the instincts needed to become a champion. But when Kurt witnesses the merciless murder of his brother at the hands of Muay Thai champion Tong Po, he vows revenge. He trains with his brother’s mentor, Xian Chow, for a Muay Thai fight to the death with Tong Po. Chow first thinks Kurt impossible to train, but through a series of spiritual exercises and tests, Chow discovers that Kurt has a deeper strength that will carry him through his final showdown with Tong Po.

Also set to star Alain Moussi (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) and George St. Pierre (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Kickboxer is produced by Ted Field of Radar Films, Dimitri Logthetis and Nick Celozzi. Mike Weber and Peter Meyer are executive producing. “We are so excited to have ‘Kickboxer’ roll into production and to have JCVD in the role of Master Chow, passing the torch to Alain, to have him lead the franchise to a new generation ” said Field. “Audiences better get ready for this incredible reboot. The action is going to be non-stop with never-before seen stunts. Simply put, ‘Kickboxer’ will kick-ass!” The remake of the 1989 cult classic, Kickboxer started production this week. The film is shooting in New Orleans, Louisiana and Thailand.

This is great news. The last time we saw Van Damme on the big screen was in The Expendables 2 and he looked in really great shape and seeing in go back to his roots is a great idea. So far its worked for Stallone (Rocky Balboa and Rambo) and Arnold hasn't proven it just yet, but he'll get his shot in Terminator Genisys next year. I really enjoyed the first Kickboxer film and I'm really interested to see who gets to play the part that Van Damme played.

This is a pretty bland photo. It's simple and it gives a little tease about the film, but nothing else. This is what Jason Statham is best at and while the film doesn't sound the greatest I'm excited to see what Statham can do in this film.
