My Top 10 Favorite Bible Based Films of All-Time

The Bible is the best selling book in the history of mankind and it has a lot of different and interesting stories. With that being said and with the release of Exodus: Gods& Kings being released I've decide to bring you my top 10 favorite bible based films of all-time. So without further ado...

10. Joseph: King of Dreams
Joseph king dreams.jpg

This film has a great ensemble voice cast and it has a lot or great and catchy songs. Adventure and music set the stage for this tale of a boy named Joseph (voiced of Ben Affleck) whose dreams bring him powerful visions of the future. Joseph's abilities to prognosticate win him a favored position with the Pharaoh of Egypt, but only inflames his contentious relationship with his brothers. Joseph: King of Dreams doesn't have a score on rottentomatoes.com.

9. Noah

This film caused a lot of controversy and gained a lot of attention this past year, but it's still one of my favorite films of 2014. Noah (played by Russell Crowe) is chosen by his world's creator to undertake a momentous mission before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the world. Noah has a rating of 77% on rottentomatoes.com.

8. The Greatest Story Ever Told
GREATSTO.jpg

This film is very powerful and it has a magnificent ensemble cast and it does one of the best jobs I have ever seen of telling the story of Jesus Christ. The Greatest Story Ever Told, is an adaptation of Fulton Oursler's best-selling book. The "Greatest Story" is, and of course, the life of Jesus Christ (played by Max Von Sydow). The Greatest Story Ever Told has a rating of 37% on rottentomatoes.com.

7. Jesus Christ Superstar

Now I may catch some bad heat from some of you but, you know what if you don't like what I'm doing then don't read my blog simple as that. Yes this movie is controversial but it's a movie and I think that there are more important issues in the world that we should be concerned about besides a movie. The film recounts the last week in the life of Jesus Christ in rock-opera format and from the surprising point of view of Christ's betrayer, Judas Iscariot (played by Carl Anderson) who has begun to believe that Jesus (played by Ted Neeley) has sold out and started buying into the mythology that's quickly springing up around him. Particularly disturbing to Judas is the relationship between Jesus and his friend Mary Magdalene (played by Yvonne Elliman), a prostitute. When Jesus throws a temper tantrum at the moneylenders in a temple, Judas determines to work with the Pharisees who want to put Jesus on trial as a false prophet. Jesus Christ Superstar has a rating of 57% on rottentomatoes.com.

6. The Ten Commandments
10Command56.jpg

This film has amazing performances and visuals and it;s one of the best interpretations of the the story of Moses. Moses (played by Charlton Heston) starts out "in solid" as Pharoah's adopted son, but when he discovers his true Hebrew heritage, he attempts to make life easier for his people. Banished by his jealous half-brother Rameses (played by Yul Brynner), Moses returns fully bearded to Pharoah's court, warning that he's had a message from God and that the Egyptians had better free the Hebrews post-haste if they know what's good for them. Only after the Deadly Plagues have decimated Egypt does Rameses give in. As the Hebrews reach the Red Sea, they discover that Rameses has gone back on his word and plans to have them all killed. But Moses rescues his people with a little Divine legerdemain by parting the Seas. Later, Moses is again confronted by God on Mt. Sinai, who delivers unto him the Ten Commandments. Meanwhile, the Hebrews, led by the duplicitous Dathan (played by Edward G. Robinson), are forgetting their religion and behaving like libertines. The Ten Commandments was nominated for 7 Academy Awards including Best Pictures, Best Sound, Best Cinematography (color), Best Art Direction (color), Best Costume Design (color), Best Film Editing and Best Visual Effects and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and it has a rating of 91% on rottentomatoes.com.

5. Ben-Hur
Ben hur 1959 poster.jpg

This movie is amazing and it has some of the best visuals and action that I have ever seen form a movie from the 1950's. A rebellious Israelite Jew named Judah Ben-Hur (played by Charlton Heston who takes on the Roman Empire during the time of Christ.Ben-Hur was nominated for 12 Academy Awards including Best Pictures, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Art Direction, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Special Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Music and Best Sound Recording while winning 11 (Best Pictures, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Special Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Music and Best Sound Recording) and it has a rating of 87% on rottentomatoes.com.

4. The Robe

I'm a huge Richard Burton fan (on-screen only) as well and I really enjoyed this movie. A wastrelly Roman tribune named Marcellus Gallio (played by Richard Burton) is assigned by a weary Pontius Pilate (played by Richard Boone) to supervise the crucifixion of Christ. After the Seven Last Words, the jaded Gallio wins Christ's robe in a dice game. Gradually, the mystical influence of the holy garment transforms Gallio from a roistering cynic into a True Believer--at the cost of his own life, which he willingly gives up in the service of his Lord. The Robe was nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Cinematography (color), Art Direction (color), Best Costume Design (color) and Best Actor while winning 2 (Best Art Direction (color) and Best costume Design (color)) and it has a rating of 35% on rottentomatoes.com.

3. The Last Temptation of Christ
Black thorns against a blood red background.

Director Martin Scorsese has faced a lot of controversy over the years, but I don't believe it's ever been worse than when this film was being made. Yes i know it is a fictional retelling of the story of Jesus but like I said before it's a movie people, focus on bigger issues than the ones that cinema presents. The film depicts a sometimes reluctant, self-doubting Jesus (played by Willem Dafoe), gradually coming to accept his divinity and the inexorability of his ultimate fate. The Last Temptation of Christ has a rating of 83% on rottentomatoes.com.

2. Prince of Egypt
Prince of egypt ver2.jpg

This is a very emotional and powerful film and it has an amazing ensemble voice cast and it is one of the best animated films I have ever seen. "My son, I have nothing I can give, but this chance that you may live." With these words, Yocheved (voiced by Ofra Haza), a Hebrew mother, places her infant son in a basket and sets him adrift on the Nile River. His sister Miriam (voiced by Sandra Bullock) follows him along the riverbank to ensure its safety. After a perilous journey, the basket floats near the royal palace, where it is spotted by the Queen (voiced by Helen Mirren). As she approaches the basket with her young son nearby, she marvels at the beautiful infant boy inside. She names the baby Moses (voiced by Val Kilmer) and adopts him as her own. The Prince of Egypt was nominated for 2 Academy Awards including Best Original Song and Best Original Score and it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and it has a rating of 79% on rottentomatoes.com

1.The Passion of the Christ
Thepassionposterface-1-.jpg

While this is my favorite Easter themed film, it is also on a very short list of movies that I've cried while watching them. The film is very powerful and Mel Gibson does an unbelievable job. In the Garden of Gethsemane near the Mount of Olives, Jesus (played by James Caviezel) is betrayed by Judas Iscariot (played by Luca Lionello). Jesus is condemned to death for blasphemy and brought before Pontius Pilate (played by Hristo Naumov Shopov), the Roman governor of Judea, for sentencing. The roaring crowd demand his death, so Pilate orders his crucifixion. Jesus is severely beaten and made to carry his cross up to Golgotha, the hill outside Jerusalem, where he is nailed to the cross. The Passion of the Christ was nominated for 3 Academy Awards including Best Makeup, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score and it has a rating of 49% on rottentomatoes.com.
