12-29-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

While the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy The Interview made less than $3 million in its first four days of theatrical release in 331 independent film houses, it’s now being reported that it has grossed $15 million from online sales and rentals in North America between Wednesday and Saturday. Who knows how much money the movie would have made if Sony Pictures had gone with its original plan for a wide release on Christmas Day, but what ended up being a groundbreaking gamechanger of a decision may pay off as the movie was downloaded legally 2 million times mainly on Google Play and YouTube.  iTunes just started offering the movie this morning although it has yet to place on the Top 30 for the ITunes Store. It hasn’t been determined what the plans are for the movie from here on, including the chances of it getting a normal theatrical release internationally, where the paid download was not made available, but it still has a ways to go before it makes back its $45 million budget. Reviews have generally been mixed right down the middle on Rotten Tomatoes with many regional critics taking advantage of the availability to watch the movie via download when critics screenings were cancelled after Sony balked on the original release plans in response to major theater chains refusing to show the movie.

This is a really great number for the film to hit. I know that Sony is very disappointed (like the rest of us) that the film wasn't released in a lot of theaters where they would've easily made a lot more money. On the other hand it's a sad note that the film was illegally downloaded 2 million times and if this was stopped then the film would've have made a lot of money. Look I understand why people do it, but I'm against it one hundred percent. Anyway I'm really glad that this film made as much as it did and hopefully it makes more.

Back in August, Groot himself Vin Diesel made a brief tease on his Facebook page referencing that Marvel thought he was “Inhuman,” leading many to believe that the actor might be making his way into another Marvel franchise down the road. You can check out the photo below. Since then, Marvel finally gave Inhumans a release date of November 2, 2018, and now Vin is back with another tease, albeit one that’s a little more on the nose. Vin posted the image below (via /Film) without comment, though the logo on his shirt is for the film and the “Are You Inhuman?” text behind him was previously used in an ad campaign for Marvel Comics’ “Inhumanity.” It’s entirely possible for Diesel to appear in Inhumans given only his voice was used for Guardians of the Galaxy, and as we learned on the set of that film last year, Diesel was openly discussing his involvement in the movie despite not having officially signed on. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and introduced in the pages of “Fantastic Four” #45 back in 1965, The Inhumans were regulars in that series for decades before being given a high-profile mini-series in the late ’90s and they’ve been very active in the Marvel Universe ever since. Given their powers by the Terrigen Mists, the powerful Inhumans have a wide array of powers ranging from the life like and constrictive hair of Medusa to the destruction causing voice of their king Black Bolt.

I really like this picture. Vin diesel has turned his career around a lot of people are now on his bandwagon. He did a really great job with the role of Groot (granted it was mo-cap and voice work) and it is very possible for him to be another character in the MCU. For the longest time I thought he would be Vision, but that role has since went to Paul Bettany. Honestly I think a role in The Inhumans film will be great for him and the film itself.

Fortune magazine has debuted their latest profile piece, focusing on Disney CEO Bob Iger, and along with it comes a new shot of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Iger and the fabled ship also landed on the cover of the magazine. You can check out the photo below. Starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong and Miltos Yerolemou, the J.J. Abrams-directed film will debut in theaters on December 18, 2015.

I really like everything about the photo except for who's in it. Now granted Bob Iger is the head man over at Disney so he can do what he wants and plus the article is about him, but I wish it could have been someone else. But overall the Falcon looks amazing and the photo just gives off a great Star wars vibe. If you don't know by now, I am looking forward to this film and I just mad that I have to wait until December of next year.

We’ve got a great look at the costume design for the super villain Yellowjacket as he’ll be featured in director Peyton Reed’s upcoming Marvel Studios “Phase Two” capper Ant-Man. You can check out the banner below. Marvel’s Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd (This is 40, They Came Together), Evangeline Lilly (“LOST,” The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies), Corey Stoll (This is Where I Leave You, Non-Stop) and Michael Douglas (The Game, And So It Goes) and brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time.  Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

In the film, the man under the Yellowjacket suit is said to be Stoll’s Darren Cross. In the comics, Yellowjacket was initially an alternate superhero identity for Hank Pym, the costume having made its first appearance in “The Avengers” #59. Because of the severe mental stress he was under, Yellowjacket actually manifested itself as the darker side of Pym, leading to the character’s infamous turn to spousal abuse. Later on, a criminal named Rita DeMara stole the suit and became at first a supervillain and, later on, a sort of antihero, eventually traveling to the 30th century and teaming up with a very different Guardians of the Galaxy team. Also starring Judy Greer (“Archer,” Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Bobby Cannavale (Chef, Blue Jasmine), Michael Pena (End of Watch, Fury), Martin Donovan (Inherent Vice, Insomnia), Wood Harris (Dredd, Remember the Titans), John Slattery (“Mad Men,” Iron Man 2), Gregg Turkington (“Gravity Falls,” The Comedy), Abby Ryder Fortson (“Togetherness,” “The Whispers”), David Dastmalchian (The Dark Knight, Prisoners) and T.I. (Takers, “House of Lies”), Ant-Man features a script by Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish, Andrew Barrer, Gabriel Ferrari and Adam McKay. Look for it to hit theaters July 17, 2015.

This is a pretty great banner. We've already seen concept art for Ant-Man as well as a fan poster, but this is our first real look at Wasp. I've been wondering how they were going to do the costume and let's just say  am very pleased with it.The film has went through, but I cannot wait for it to come out next summer.

We’ve got a new look at George Miller’s much-anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road today, courtesy of Empire magazine. The outlet has released images of two new covers, both of which feature Tom Hardy as “Mad” Max Rockatansky, the character played by Mel Gibson in Miller’s original The Road Warrior, Mad Max and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. You can check out both designs below. Co-written and directed by Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road offers post-apocalyptic action set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Hardy), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos and Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland. Also starring Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, X-Men: Days of Future Past), Hugh Keays-Byrne (Mad Max, Sleeping Beauty), Nathan Jones (Conan the Barbarian, Troy), Zoe Kravitz (Divergent, X-Men: First Class), Riley Keough (The Runaways, Magic Mike) and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Age of Extinction), Mad Max: Fury Road opens in 2D and 3D theaters on May 15, 2015

These are really great covers/photos. These covers/photos really give us our best look at Tom Hardy as Max and let me just say he looks amazing. I'm a huge fan of this franchise and to know that this film is a direct sequel to Beyond Thunderdome gets me even more excited to see this film.
