12-2-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

An all-star roster of actors has joined Warner Bros. Pictures’ new action adventure Suicide Squad, bringing DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen under the direction of David Ayer (Fury). The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. The film will star two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness, Ali) as Deadshot; Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road) as Rick Flag; Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus) as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Alexander) as the Joker; Jai Courtney (Divergent, The Water Diviner) as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina, upcoming Pan) as Enchantress.

In making the announcement, Silverman said, “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote ‘Training Day’ and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.” Ayer is also writing the script for Suicide Squad, which is being produced by Charles Roven (The Dark Knight trilogy, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and Richard Suckle (American Hustle). Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns are serving as executive producers.

Suicide Squad, which was originally created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, will set up shop in Toronto, Canada at their Pinewood extension starting in February. Following two months of pre-production, the film will shoot from April until September for a August 5, 2016 release. It was also previously rumored that Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor will play a role in the story, although his name is not included in this official cast list.

This is an amazing cast. I'm going to break this down actor by actor.  First off the casting of Jared Leto is possibly the best casting WB/DC  has done so far. This guy is an Academy Award winning actor and he honestly has the abilities to make The Joker spectacular. Now will it be as good as Heath Ledger probably not (it'll be extremely hard), but let's not put pressure on Leto and let's just let him make the character his own and we'll judge it then. On to Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She is a very talented actress and she has the physique to play her and I think she is perfect for the role. Now Tom Hardy is in a interesting role. As much as I love comics I'm not to familiar with Rick Flag, but Tome Hardy is an amazing actor and I think he'll do a great job, I personally would've cast him as Deathstroke but that's just me. Jai Courtney as Bommerang is pretty neat since Courtney is an Australian actor playing an Australian character so I'm sure that'll please all of the Aussie's. Cara Delevingne as Enchantress is one that I don't know about. I'm familiar with Delevingne or Enchantress so I'm really curious to see how this will play out. Finally we come to the big elephant in the room Will Smith as Deadshot. Now Let me start off an say I have no problem with a studio changing the color of a character (in this case a predominantly white character will be played by an African-American), my biggest beef is that it is Will Smith. He;s a great actor, but his choices haven't been the best over the past couple of years (After Earth anyone) and he's been known to bring Jaden along for the ride and I just hope he doesn't pop up as young Floyd Lawton. All I can say is that this is a great cast and I cannot wait to see the movie.

Albert R. Broccoli’s EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment have revealed plans for a live announcement at the 007 Stage at Pinewood Studios where the title and cast of the 24th James Bond film will be revealed as production is set to begin Monday, December 8. Fans from around the world will be able to watch the announcement online via live stream at 007.com which begins at 11 a.m. GMT (6 a.m. ET, 3 a.m. PT). Set for release on November 6, 2015, Bond 24 will once again see Daniel Craig in the leading role along with returning cast members Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw. Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, and Dave Bautista have also reportedly joined the cast. Sam Mendes returns to direct the film, which is produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

This is great news. I'm glad that all of the speculation will be over about the cast and I'll be able to finally call the film something else other than Bond 24. Look I don't have a clue what the title could be, but just for giggles I'll guess Devil May Care. It's the most recent Bond book title and the plot of the book makes sense with the cast that could possibly be in place.

British actress Felicity Jones has been getting a lot of awards attention for her role as Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything, and now Deadline has word that she has parlayed that heat into a co-starring role opposite Tom Hanks in Ron Howard’s upcoming blockbuster threequel Inferno. Jones is in early talks to play Sienna Brooks, a doctor who must help Harvard symbologist Henry Langdon (Hanks) recover his memories in order to stop a madman from releasing a globalplague. Based on the bestselling novel by Dan Brown, Inferno is the follow-up to Howard and Hanks’ hits The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, both of which grossed a combined $1.2 billion worldwide. The new film is written by David Koepp and produced by Howard and Brian Grazer for an October 14, 2016 release. Jones recently completed a starring role opposite Nicholas Hoult in drug-smuggling thriller Autobahn, and is currently filming Juan Antonio Bayona’s dark fairytale A Monster Calls.

This is great casting. Felicity Jones is a very talented actress and is likely to get an Oscar nomination for her work in The Theory of Everything. I'm not a huge fan of this franchise, but Felicity Jones could help spark it and I can't wait to see what she does in the film.

Following yesterday’s reveal of a design featuring Cate Blanchett, Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera as Cinderella‘s wicked stepmother and stepsisters, the upcoming Walt Disney Pictures film has debuted, once again via PopSugar, a new character poster. This one offers Helena Bonham Carter as The Fairy Godmother and you can check it out below. Also starring Lily James, Richard Madden, Stellan Skarsgård and Derek Jacobi, Cinderella follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an employee at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears as if her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming “Kit.” Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Cinderella hits theaters March 13, 2015.

Helena Bonham Carter as The Fairy Godmother

I really like this poster. Just like the other one it really shows the characters personality in the film and gives us an idea how they'll be in the film. I like it when films do this just so they can give an idea about the film. Like I said yesterday I'm not to excited for the film, but I'm going to give it a fair shot like it deserves.

Duncan Jones’ original time travel thriller Source Code is getting a sequel. Variety reports that The Mark Gordon Company and Vendome Pictures (who were both responsible for the 2011 original) have hired “Outlander” director Anna Foerster to helm a big screen follow-up. Source Code scribe Ben Ripley is set to return to provide the screenplay. Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the first film as Colter Stevens, a soldier who finds himself part of a top secret government project through which his consciousness is sent back to repeat the same eight minutes of time over and over in the hopes of retrieving information that can prevent a grand disaster. Shortly after the original film was released, word broke that the story of Source Code would continue on the small screen. Jones himself announced on social media that he was not involved with that iteration. Whether or not he’s connected in any way to these new sequel plans remains to be seen, although he likely has his hands full for the time being as he’s helming the upcoming video game adaptation Warcraft. There’s also the question of whether or not Gyllenhaal might return in some capacity, although the story certainly lends itself the chance to feature an all-new protagonist. Jones himself likened Source Code to the ongoing adventures of Scott Bakula’s Dr. Sam Beckett on “Quantum Leap” and even gave Bakula a cameo in the original film. You can check out ComingSoon.net’s videointerview from 2011 wherein Jones discusses that easter egg right here. The Source Code sequel will be produced by Mark Gordon and Philippe Rousselet. Michele Wolkoff and Drew Simon and Guy Fabrice Gianfermi and Guy Stodel will oversee for the Mark Gordon Company and Vendome Pictures, respectively.

This is great news to hear. I absolutely loved the first film and Gyllenhaal gave an outstanding performance. Like the article said the film was left open for a sequel and It'll be interesting if the do bring back Gyllenhaal for the seqeul, but a part of me wants to see what another actor can do. Like I said I loved the first film and I cannot wait to see this.
