12-3-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Things have been very quiet on the front of 20th Century Fox’s reboot of The Fantastic Four with nary a trailer, poster, or even official image to speak of, but now an official synopsis of the upcoming film has been released and reads as follows: “The Fantastic Four,” a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, Kate Mara and Miles Teller will play the titular team in the upcoming film. Toby Kebbell will also appear as Dr. Doom along with Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Franklin Storm and Tim Blake Nelson as Harvey Elder, aka The Mole Man. Directed by Josh Trank, The Fantastic Four is set for release on August 7, 2015.

This is very bland synopsis. It honestly doesn't really really explain or state anything brand new. It just seems that the studio really isn't putting an effort into the story. But with that being said They have a great crew in place from Simon Kinberg writing the film, Josh Trank directing and the cast they've assembled so I'm going to wait for a trailer to see how the film will look and feel.

Next year will not only see the release of Marvel’s gigantic sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, but also the long-in-development Ant-Man, which has had a difficult road in getting to the big screen. Few names were ever brought up for the female lead in the film besides Evangeline Lilly, who plays Hope Van Dyne in the film. Lilly spoke about Wright’s departure and that she almost considered walking away after the director did. “We all, I think, signed on very enthusiastically with Edgar. We were excited to work with Edgar. We were fans of Edgar. So when the split happened, I was in the fortunate position where I had not signed my contract yet. So I had the choice to walk away, and I almost did. Because I thought, Well, if it’s because Marvel are big bullies, and they just want a puppet and not someone with a vision, I’m not interested in being in this movie. Which is what I was afraid of.’

“I finally got the script literally the day before I was supposed to go in for fittings…I saw with my own eyes that Marvel had just pulled the script into their world. I mean, they’ve established a universe, and everyone has come to expect a certain aesthetic [and] a certain feel for Marvel films. And what Edgar was creating was much more in the Edgar Wright camp of films. They were very different. And I feel like, if [Marvel] had created Edgar’s incredible vision — which would have been, like, classic comic book — it would have been such a riot to film [and] it would have been so much fun to watch. [But] it wouldn’t have fit in the Marvel Universe. It would have stuck out like a sore thumb, no matter how good it was. It just would have taken you away from this cohesive universe they’re trying to create. And therefore it ruins the suspended disbelief that they’ve built.”

Lilly also went on to talk about both her character in the film and the blending of two Ant-Mans in the film. “I thought Edgar’s idea to blend the [Hank and Scott] stories was brilliant,” she says. “You’re going to have fans up there who insist that you tell the story of Hank Pym, and fans up there who will be more on the Scott Lang side of it. … I think we are going to come close to pleasing them all. And what’s cool is that, you know, Janet Van Dyne is my mom. Hank Pym is my father. I was raised by two superheroes. I’m no schlump. I’m a pretty smart, competent, capable, kick-ass female. She’s very cool.” Greer and Lilly are joined by Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Abby Ryder Fortson, David Dastmalchian, Wood Harris, John Slattery, Gregg Turkington and T.I. in the film. Ant-Man is set for the July 17, 2015 release.

These are some really interesting comments. I really love how passionate she is about the departure of Edgar Wright and I honestly wouldn't have blamed for walking out, But she is grown-up and this is a job a lot of actresses would love to have. I also like the way the story of the film will be told by not using Janet Van Dyne and Hank Pym as Wasp and Ant-Man,but  instead we'll get their daughter and Scott Lang. I love what this film has been doing so far (aside from Wright's departure) and i cannot wait to see this film.

Variety talked with Chadwick Boseman about his new role as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and he had a lot of interesting things to say. “There’s a director on the movies that I’m introduced, but not for ‘Black Panther,’” said Boseman. “Just being a part of that discussion is huge. You’re reading the comic books and you have ideas about how that’s gonna happen and you can discuss that.” “Movies” being the operative word here. Although it was previously stated that T’Challa would make his debut in May 6, 2016′s Captain America: Civil War, the appearance of Andy Serkis playing what many believe to be Ulysses Klaw in the trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as the rumors of Vibranium playing a key role in that sequel’s plot, have many wondering if Boseman will indeed drop by in next summer’s blockbuster. It would certainly make more sense than having the ruler of Wakanda pop up in Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 or Thor: Ragnarok. His only other appearance in the MCU was a very subtle reference to Black Panther on a monitor at the end of Iron Man 2. “I’m excited about it too!” continued Boseman. “Beyond excited, it’s like to the point where you feel numb and then your mind goes off into, ‘Ok, how do I achieve that?’ The great thing about it is that the actual character is unique in a lot of ways. I can’t think of another character that’s like the leader of a nation and is a superhero at the same time. There are a lot of different ways this story can go, ways that they can do it, so I’m really just excited about how it fits into the bigger picture of what Marvel is doing.” Marvel Studios’ Black Panther solo movie is currently being written by Mark Bailey with a scheduled release date of November 3, 2017.

I absolutely love these comments. Chadwick Boseman is a very talented actor and I think he is the perfect fir for this role. Ii also does make sense for him to be in The Avengers: Age of Ultron as Wakanda is going to play a huge part in the film and its where the film will start off at (Rumors not confirmed). All I know is I'm excited to see what Boseman can do with the role.

Deadline brings word this afternoon that director F. Javier Gutiérrez has dropped out of Relativity Studios’ upcoming reboot of The Crow and that Corin Hardy has been tapped as his successor. Hardy’s first feature film, The Hallow, will be released next year, though he has directed a number of short films and music videos for artists such as Ed Sheeran and The Prodigy. Gutiérrez signed on to direct the next entry in “The Ring” franchise, which conflicted with the shooting schedule of The Crow. Luke Evans is currently attached to wear the iconic makeup in the film, which features a script by Cliff Dorfman. Series creator James O’Barr will also work as a creative consultant on the film. No release date is currently set though production is set to begin in spring of 2015. The Crow was originally published as a four issue series in 1989 and was adapted into a film in 1994 by Alex Proyas with Brandon Lee in the title role. Countless other sequels to both the comic and film have been produced in the years following.

This is pretty shocking news. Gutiérrez has been attached to the project for a long time and I'm surprised to see him go, but when other projects you have commitments to come around you have to do them. I'm not familiar with Colin Hardy's work so I'm going to check out The Hallow so I can get an idea of his style. Look everyone knows how much I love the original film and I just hope that this film can do the original justice.

17-year-old English actress Maisie Williams, best known for her role as the courageous Arya Stark on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” has been in the running to play Ellie in the video game adaptation The Last of Us, and has now used the magic word “Yes” in talking with IGN about how her casting is progressing. Although her name was dropped by producers at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, according to Williams she was not familiar with the action-horror game franchise until fans on Twitter–including Ashley Johnson, original voice of Ellie–fan casted her for the role, so she got her American agent to set up a meeting. “I had a meeting with [producer] Sam Raimi and [game director] Neil Druckmann,” says Williams. “They said they’d love ‘if you would moderate the panel at Comic-Con, but you’d need to watch the walk-through and know your s*** because there are massive fans of this and we wouldn’t want it to go wrong.’ I was doing so much work for ‘Thrones’ that I didn’t want to half-arse do it, so I said I’m not going to [moderate]. They said fine, but they’re gonna announce they had talks. So the way it was left is they want me to do it, and I want to do it. But there’s no script, no director, and no anything else. So at this moment, it’s looking like, ‘Yes,’ but it’s still such early days. If they make it in 30 years, they can’t have a 40-year-old Ellie. So at the moment, it’s looking good, and I’d love to do it. Hell yeah.” The Last of Us follows hardened survivor Joel and Ellie, a young and capable girl, on their journey through a radically transformed world. Set twenty years after an infectious pandemic spread by the cordyceps virus ravaged the course of humanity, these two people, who were brought together by chance, must make life-altering decisions in order to survive. The Last of Us explores themes of survival, loyalty, love, and redemption in an emotionally charged expedition across a post-epidemic United States.

This is pretty interesting casting. I'm going to go ahead and state that I'm not a fan of Game of Thrones so I've never seen her act before, but with that being said she looks the part. Looks don't always matter, but for some odd reason she seems like a good fit for the film. I absolutely loved The Last of Us and I'm excited to see the film.
