My Review of The Rocky Film Sereis

So this has nothing to do with film but this year's World Series has been a heavyweight fight between the St.Louis Cardinals  and my Boston Red Sox. So I thought I should review something that dealt with a heavyweight and what better film series to do this with than the Rocky Film Series. So without further ado......

Rocky
File:Rocky poster.jpg

The film tells the story of underground Philadelphia boxer Rocky Balboa (played by Sylvester Stallone)  and how he wants to be more then a low-life no name boxer. The opportunity of a lifetime arises when world champion boxer Apollo Creed (played by Carl Weathers) challenges Rocky to fight for the Heavyweight  Championship. Though nobody thinks Rocky can win he trains with an old friend and gym owner Mickey Goldmill ( Burgess Meredith). One of the subplots is Rocky trying to draw his best friend Paulie's (played by Burt Young) sister Adrian (played by Talia Shire) out of her shyness and tries to show her that she is beautiful woman.

This is without a doubt the greatest sports movie of all-time and one of two to win the Academy Award for Best Picture so I give the film a 10 out 10.

Rocky 2
Rocky ii poster.jpg

Soon after proving himself, even with a split decision loss to Apollo Creed, Rocky (played by Sylvester Stallone) expects the good life to follow. He marries Adrian (played by Talia Shire) and begins spending the money he earned from the match. But after he fails at both endorsements and a series of low-wage jobs, Rocky realizes the only way he can survive is to begin boxing again. Creed (played by Carl Weathers), on the other hand, faces criticism from fans to overcome the fight. As a result, he taunts Rocky through publicity into a rematch, for which Rocky trains himself once again with Mickey (played by Burgess Meredith).

This film (while it isn't as good as the original) still makes us feel like the underdog and motivates us to be something better. I give the film a 9 out of 10.

Rocky 3
Rocky iii poster.jpg

After winning the Heavyweight title, Rocky (played by Sylvester Stallone) takes advantage of his new found wealth and fame, appearing in multiple advertisements & television programs and relishing his new celebrity. After defending the title multiple times, he is prepared to retire, but the No. 1 contender, James "Clubber" Lang (played by Mr. T), challenges Rocky publicly. After losing the fight an title, Rocky witnesses the death of Mickey (played by Burgess Meredith) due to a heart attack. After the loss of Mickey, Rocky decides that it's time to enlist the help of an old rival in Apollo Creed (played by Carl Weathers) to train him in Creed's old style (and in his old Los Angeles gym) and use more guile and skill.

This film is pretty good, it doesn't' match the greatness of the first two but it does have more emotion than the first two. So with that being said I give the film a 7.5 out of 10.

Rocky 4
Rocky IV.jpg

After winning back the title from Clubber Lang, Rocky (played by Sylvester Stallone) decides to spend some time with his family. However, destiny has some new plans for which doesn't allow him to leave the ring. A new fighter from the USSR, Ivan Drago (played by Dolph Lundgren) has emerged, and challenges Rocky to an exhibition match. Apollo (played by Carl Weathers) fights instead and the beating he takes from Drago ends with him dying in Rocky's arms, still in the ring as Drago coldly watches. To avenge Apollo and fight for his country, Rocky challenges Drago to a fight, which is to be held on Christmas Day in Moscow.

If it hadn't been for some other great films this would have definitely been in my top 10 favorite sports films of all time. I absolutely love this film and I will give it a 9 out of 10.

Rocky 5
Rocky v poster.jpg

In the aftermath of his fight with Ivan Drago, Rocky Balboa (played by Sylvester Stallone is diagnosed with brain damage and is forced to retire from the ring. As if things weren't bad enough, the Balboa fortune is all gone due to an unscrupulous accountant. Rocky's family returns to their old neighborhood, Adrian (played by Talia Shire) returns to the pet store where she use to work at, while, in a subplot Rocky Jr. (played by Sage Stallone (Sylvester Stallone's real son)) deals with bullying at his school and Rocky re-opens Mickey's old gym. While training boxers, Rocky meets a young, hungry boxer named Tommy Gunn (played by real-life boxer Tommy Morrison) and begins training him which results in a strained relationship with Rocky Jr.. Unfortunately, as Tommy begins his rise to fame under Rocky's wing, a sleazy fight promoter named George Washington Duke (played by Richard Grant) convinces Tommy that Rocky is holding him back, and Tommy throws over Rocky for Duke. After Tommy wins the heavyweight title, he makes a short speech thanking Duke , and is met with jeers and the familiar chant of "Rocky" from the crowd. Seething from this insult, as well as being called by publicists as "Rocky's Robot", Tommy decides to seek out his former mentor for a final showdown.

I just going to come out and say that this film is a piece of garbage and in my mind isn't a Rocky film and it doesn't exist so I'm going to give this film a 1 out of 10.

Rocky Balboa
Scaled rbmp.jpg

Sixteen years have passed since his final fight with his former protege, Tommy "The Machine" Gunn. Long retired boxer Rocky Balboa (played by Sylvester Stallone) still staggers around an ever-changing world; his son is grown and distant, Paulie (played by Burt Young) is working back at the meat plant and Rocky's wife Adrian has died. Rocky has opened a restaurant named after his wife, which he stocks with mementos of his prime as he tells his old fighting stories to the customers. But when a computer simulated fight on ESPN depicting a bout between a young Rocky Balboa and the current champion, Mason Dixon (played by real-life boxer Antonio Tarver) reignites intrest in the faded boxer, Rocky discovers he has not lost his fighting spirit and considers an opportunity to prove himself in the ring again.

This film returns the series back t its original form and its a great movie. The only bad thing I can really say about the movie is the ending and the result of the fight. Overall I give the film a 8 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what do you think of the Rocky film series, what would you rate each film, which one is your favorite and what did you think of my reviews? Let me know in the comments and let your voice be heard.

                                                                                                                     Jonah Sparks

My Top 10 Favorite Traditional Animation Movies

Animated movies are some of the best films in cinema today. They are mainly geared towards children but they also have humor that only adults will understand. So I'm going to bring you my favorite Top 10 Traditional  animated movies (animated films that are drawn by hand). Also on this list I will include live action films with traditional animation in the film as well. So without further ado....

10. Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs-
Snow White 1937 poster.jpg

This film is probably the greatest animated film of all-time and is one of the best films of all-time. A beautiful girl, Snow White (voiced by Adriana Caselotti), takes refuge in the forest in the house of seven dwarfs named Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey (voiced by Roy Atwell, Pinto Colvig (who also voices Happy), Otis Harlan, Scotty Mattraw, Billy Gilbert and Eddie Collins respectively) to hide from her stepmother the wicked Queen (voiced by Lucille La Verne). The Queen is jealous because she wants to be known as "the fairest in the land" and Snow White's beauty surpasses her own.  This is one of the first films I remember watching and when the queen turns into the creepy old woman, I literally get scared every time she is on screen. Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs was nominated for the Acdemy Award for Best Musical Score.

9. The Simpsons Movie-
Film poster showing five people standing of the roof of a house on fire. From left to right: a girl stands purposefully looking into the distance, a woman looks shocked, a man, holding a pig under his arm, holds a giant donut in the air to complete the text "The Simpsons Movie" above him. A baby lies underneath his legs, a boy with a slingshot to his left.

I'm a huge fan of the show and the is film. Thanks to Lisa Simpson (voiced by Yeardly Smith), Lake Springfield is cleaned up from the pollution that once fouled it. But when Homer (voiced by Dan Castellaneta), who's adopted a pig and dumps a silo full of the pig's waste into the lake, the EPA places a large dome over Springfield, and the Simpsons Family manage to escape through a sinkhole. The family then flees to a better life in Alaska, but when the head of the EPA, Russ Cargill (voiced by Albert Brooks),  orders the town to be deconstructed, it's up to Homer to save Springfield. The Simpsons Movie has a rating of 90% on rottentomatoes.com.

8. The Brave Little Toaster-
Brave Little Toaster poster.jpg

This is another film that I watched a lot when I was younger. The film is set in a world where household appliances and other electronics have the ability to speak and move, pretending to be lifeless in the presence of humans. The story focuses on five appliances a toaster named Toaster (voiced by Deanna Oliver) a lamp named Lampy (voiced by Tim Stack), an electric blanket named Blanky (voiced by Timothy E. Day), a radio named The Blaster or a Walter Winchell radio (voiced by Jon Lovitz) and a vaccum cleaner named Kirby (voiced by Thurl Ravenscroft), who go on a quest to search for their original owner. I absolutely love this film. The film has two sequels that were released out of chronological order entitled The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars and The Brave Little Toaster To The Rescue with the latter taking place second in the story. The Brave Little Toaster has a rating of 75% on rottentomatoes.com.

7. Hercules-
Hercules movie poster.jpg

This is one of my favorite Disney comedy-musicals of all-time. The son of the Greek Gods Zeus (voiced by Rip Torn)and Hera (voiced by Samantha Eggar), Hercules (voiced by Josh Keaton) is stolen as a boy by the minions of Hades (voiced by James Woods), lord of the underworld. Forced to live among humans, Hercules is turned half-god and half-mortal after drinking a forbidden potion brewed by Hades right hand men Pain (voiced by Bob Goldthwait) and Panic (voiced by Matt Frewer). Now Hercules has the remarkable strength of a god, but is trapped in the body of a human, and before he learns how to use his powers or can return to his home on Mount Olympus he must prove himself to be a true hero on Earth. I just absolutely love this film and anytime its on, I am glued to the TV. Hercules was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song and has a rating of 83% on rottentomatoes.com.

6. Robin Hood-
Robinhood 1973 poster.png

This film is mainly great because it adds a new twist to the tale of Robin Hood as all of the characters are animals. The film begins after Prince John (who is a lion voiced by Peter Ustinov) and Sir Hiss (who is a snake voiced by Terry Thomas) have tricked the true king into leaving the country on a phony crusade. With the help of The Sheriff of Nottingham (a wolf voiced by Pat Buttram), they tax the life out of Nottingham's peasants, leaving them all penniless as their only hope of survival lies of Robin Hood (a fox voiced by Brian Bedford). This film tickled me to death as a kid and I still love it today. Robin Hood was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song and has a rating of 55% on rottentomatoes.com.

5. Aladdin-
A hand holds an oil lamp and another rubs it, and glowing dust starts coming off the lamp's nozzle. The text "Walt Disney Pictures presents: Aladdin" is atop the image, with the tagline "Imagine if you had three wishes, three hopes, three dreams and they all could come true." scrawling underneath it.

This film is a masterpiece and it is one of the highest grossing films Disney Animation has ever had. After a sultan (voiced by Douglas Steele) gives his daughter, Jasmine (voiced by Linda Larkin), three days to find a husband, she escapes the palace and encounters the street-savvy urchin Aladdin (voiced by Scott Wienger), who climbs his way into her heart. While the sultan's Vizier, Jafar (voiced by Johnathan Freeman), waves a spell so that he may marry Jasmine and become sultan himself. Aladdin however discovers the Genie's lamp in a cave, rubs it and sets the mystical entity free, leading the Genie (voiced by Robin Williams) to pledge his undying loyalty to the dazzled youth. Aladdin begin his quest to defeat Jafar and win the hand of the princes, with the Genie's help. This film is just absolutely amazing. Aladdin also has two sequels entitled Return of Jafar and Aladdin and The King of Thieves , the film was also was nominated for 5 Acdemy Awards including Best Original Score, two nominations for Original Song, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing while winning 2 (Best Original Score and Original Song) and has a rating of 92% on rottentomatoes.com.

4. Dumbo
Dumbo-1941-poster.jpg

This has got to be one of my favorite movies as a child as well as one of the saddest films I have ever seen. A young circus elephant is born with comically large ears and given the cruel nickname Dumbo. One day at a show, he is taunted by a group of kids, inciting his mother into a rage that gets her locked up. After Dumbo's ears cause an accident that injures many of the other elephants, he is made to dress like a clown and perform dangerous stunts. Everything changes when Dumbo discovers that his enormous ears actually allow him to fly, and he astounds everyone at the circus with his new talent. Dumbo was nominated for 2 Academy Awards including  Best Score and Best Original Song while winning 1 (Best Original Song) and it has a rating of 97% on rottentomatoes.com.

3. The Aristocats
Aristoposter.jpg

This film is one that I love to sing to everytime its on. The film revolves around a family of aristocratic cats, and how an alley cat acquaintance helps them after a butler has kidnapped them to gain his mistress' fortune which was intended to go to them. This is one of my favorite Disney films of all-time. The Aristocats has a rating of 66% on rottentomatoes.com.

2. The Lion King-
In an African savannah, several animals stare at a lion atop a tall rock. A lion's head can be seen in the clouds above. Atop the image is the text "Walt Disney Pictures presents The Lion King".

This is the very first film that I had ever seen. It tells the story of Simba (Younger version voiced by Johnathan Taylor Thomas, Older version voiced by Matthew Broderick)  a young lion who is to succeed his father Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones)as king. However, after Simba's uncle Scar (voiced Jeremy Irons) murder Mufasa, Simba is fooled into thinking he was responsible  and flees into exile in shame and despair. Upon maturation living with two wastrels, a meerkat naemd Timon (voiced by Nathan Lane) and a warthog named Pumba (voiced by Ernie Saballa), Simba is given some valuable perspective from his friend Nala (younger version voiced by Niketa Calame, Older version voiced by Moria Kelly) and his shaman, Rafiki (voiced by Robert Guillaume), before returning to challenge Scar to end his tyranny. This film is just a masterpiece and a classic film. The Lion King has a sequel entitled The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride and prequel film that ran parallel to the original film entitled The Lion King 1 1/2. It was also nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Original Score and Three nominations for Best Original Song, while winning 2 (Best Original Score and Original Song) and it has a rating of 90% on rottentomatoes.com.

1. The Iron Giant-
The Iron Giant poster.JPG

This film is so heartwarming and really funny. The Iron Giant tells the story of a lonely boy named Hogarth Hughes (played by Eli Marienthal) raised by his mother Annie Hughes (the widow of an Air Force Pilot) (played by Jennifer Aniston), who discovers an iron giant (played by Vin Diesel) who fell from space. With the help of a beatnik named Dean (played by Harry Connick Jr.), they have to stop the U.S. military and a federal agent from finding and destroying the Giant. The Iron Giant, takes place in October 1957 in the American stat of Maine during the height of the Cold War.  This film is by far my favorite animated film CGI or traditional and for the longest time I didn't know that Vin Diesel voiced The Iron Giant. The film has a rating of 97% on rottentomatoes.com.

So ladies and gentlemen what do you think of the list, do you agree or disagree and what are your favorite traditional animation films of all-time? Let me know in the comments and let your voice be heard.

1. Bad Grandpa pulls off somewhat of a shocker by unseeding Gravity as the number 1 film at the Box Office.
2. The Counselor brought in a pretty small amount with $8 million while being in over 3,000 theaters. But its also not like it was expected to have a $20 million opening.
3. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs has been a Box Office disappointment for being out for 5 weeks compared to its predecessor. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs made $243 million worldwide on a $100 million budget while the sequel has a smaller budget of $78 million and only making $149 million, meaning that the movie is barely profitable.
4. Prisoners is still doing fairly well at the Box Office after being in theaters for 6 weeks and only being in 1,347 theaters
5. Gravity continues is tear through the box office by bringing over $20 million for 4 weeks of its release.

So ladies and gentlemen what surprised you about the Box Office this week? Let me know in the comments and let your vice be heard.

My Review of Bad Grandpa

So I recently watched Bad Grandpa and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado..........

Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa.jpg

The film's plot revolves around an 86-year-old man named Irving Zisman (played by Johnny Knoxville) who takes his grandson Billy (played by Jackson Nicoll) on a road trip across the United States to return him to his father after his mother is sent to jail, and hidden cameras were rolling as they perform stunts and pranks.

I had a blast with the film, I haven't laughed that hard in a film for while. Johnny Knoxville is at his best while unknown actor Jackson Nicoll  gives a spectacular debut performance. I liked that the film drifted away just a little bit from the Jackass movies and having a story behind it. The only bad thing I can say about the film is that most of the funny parts are in the trailers and. Overall I give the film and 8 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Bad Grandpa, what would you score it and what did yu think of my review? Let me know in the comments and let your voice be heard.

My Review of The Counselor

So I recently watched The Counselor and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado.........

The Counselor Poster.jpg

The film stars Micheal Fassbender who plays a man simply known as "The Counselor" who dabbles in drug trafficking  around the troubled Juarez, Mexico/Texas border area only to realize just how dangerous a situation he is in while he deals with themes of greed, life, death, and the primal instincts of humans and their consequences.  The film also stars Penelope Cruz, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Javier Bardem.

The film was pretty interesting to say the least and all of the actors in the film give spectacular performances, especially Cameron Diaz, who in my mind stole the film. The film does have some downsides with heavy and confusing dialogue and the whole film felt convoluted. The film does also give one of the best sex scenes that I have ever seen in any film and Cameron Diaz does something with a Ferrari that I have never seen. Overall I give the film a 6 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of The Counselor, what would you score it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments and let your voice be heard.

Heath Ledger: What Could Have Been

So I was recently watching my favorite film of all-time (The Dark Knight) and I caught myself thinking, what could have been. No I wasn't thinking how much cooler Batman can be or what needed to happen to make the film even greater than it already is, instead I was thinking what Heath Ledger (who played The Joker) could've become if he was still with us today. For those of you that don't know Ledger passed away in January 2008 of a drug overdose, so its been a little over 5 and half years since he passed away. He didn't get to see one of his two final performances which most call his performance as The Joker (including myself) one of the most sadistic, chilling, haunting and dark performances ever in film history and it was a role that would have launched him into stardom. The other film that he happened to be working on at the time of his death is a small film entitled The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. The film used Ledgers friend's Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Ferrell to finish Ledger's scenes.

With all of that being said Ledger was on top of the world at the time of his death having come off being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in the film Brokeback Mountain and having a chance to play the greatest comic book villain of all-time (also winning an Academy Award).  I want to to take a look at what films I could see Heath Ledger being in had he not passed away (sort of like an alternate reality). I'm going to list at least two films in each year from 2009 to 2013 and give reasons why. Why 2009 you may ask, well he would've finished filming The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus in March of 2008(in actuality the film took almost two years to complete due to Ledger's Death and the release date was pushed from December 2008 to December 2009), so he would have to begin work on a film within a couple of months for it to come out in 2009.

2009
Sherlock Holmes
Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law, in-character. The background is a window display, featuring shelves containing miscellaneous objects relating to the story. The poster reads "Sherlock Holmes" across the top, with the tagline "Holmes for the holiday" centered at the bottom. The poster is predominately turquoise coloured.

Guy Ritchie (director of the film) initially wanted a younger actor to play Sherlock Holmes and making it feel like a Batman Begins. Ledger would've been 28 at the start of filming, he would playing alongside his friend Jude Law and the film would have had an Aussie play Sherlock instead of an American. This would also mean he would be in the sequel as well.

The Lovely Bones
Lovely bones ver2.jpg

Before the filming of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus began (December 2007) Ledger could have be mostly done with this film which began filming in October 2007. Most of the scenes were shot in New Zealand (the neighboring country to Ledger's home country of Australia) and plus he could have got to work with Peter Jackson (director of The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies). Ledger in my mind would have replaced Mark Wahlberg.

2010
Blue Valentine
Blue Valentine film.jpg

This one is pretty obvious. Michelle Williams (who was actually in the film) and Heath Ledger were in a relationship together they even have a daughter, so the on-screen chemistry would have been awesome.

Inception
A man in a suit with a gun in his right hand is flanked by five other individuals in the middle of a street which, behind them, is folded upwards. Leonardo DiCaprio's name and those of other cast members are shown above the words "Your Mind Is the Scene of the Crime". The title of the film "INCEPTION", film credits, and theatrical and IMAX release dates are shown at the bottom.

The reason why I say Inception is simply because of Christopher Nolan, Nolan tends to use actors over and over again, for example Tom Hardy Joseph Gordan Levitt Cillian Murphy and Marion Cotillard were all in The Dark Knight Rises (as Bane, John Blake, Scarecrow/Dr. Johnathan Crane and Talia-Al-Ghul respectively) so it would be logical for Heath Ledger to be in this film. I would see him replacing Tom Hardy.

2011
The Tree of Life
A series of images from the film arranged like mosaic tiles around the logo

This film is simple as well. Ledger was to begin filming this as soon as filming was complete on The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.

The Ides of March
The Ides of March Poster.jpg

This film proved that Ryan Gosling could really act and hang with the big boys. The same could've been said for Ledger. I mean think about it a big time boost in his career plus getting to face Batman in a non Batman (if you don't get the joke then I have no idea what's wrong with you).

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Sherlock Holmes2Poster.jpg

I make an exception for 2011 for the simple fact that Ledger would be obligated to do the sequel to Sherlock Holmes.

2012
The Dark Knight Rises
Dark knight rises poster.jpg

This is another no brainer. If Ledger had not passed away then he was scheduled to reprise his Oscar winning role as The Joker. The film most likely would've had a small cameo by The Joker or a possible team-up with Bane.

The Raven
The Raven Poster.jpg

After the performance Ledger gave as The Joker, there is not a doubt in my mind that he could have pulled of the role of Edgar Allen Poe (a man who is almost as sick and twisted as The Joker)

2013
The Great Gatsby
TheGreatGatsby2012Poster.jpg

This one is a tough call because out of the three male characters, Ledger could play any one of them. I can mostly see him replacing Tobey Maguire as Nick Caraway or Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan.

12 Years A Slave
12 Years a Slave film poster.jpg

This film would have been perfect for Ledger. The film has an all-star line-up that he could fit into very well. I see him replacing either Brad Pitt or Michael Fassbender.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, a look into what could've been for Heath Ledger. Heath was a great actor who had the talent and potential to become the greatest actor of all-time. May you rest in peace Heath.

My Review of The Fifth Estate

So I recently watched The Fifth Estate and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado.......

The Fifth Estate poster.jpg

The Fifth Estate charts the creation of WikiLeaks by the ambitious and arguably ethically dubious Julian Assenge (played by Benedict Cumberbatch). The movie opens with Assenge hiring Daniel Domscheit-Berg (played Daniel Bruhl), a fellow tech wiz to help him keep his new website operational. The site gave whistlers an entirely anonymous platform to share classified documents, and soon the pair find themselves in possession of information that will bring down a corrupt bank. As their power and influence grows, they must consider teaming with established media sources, especially when they are sent documents that would reveal ultra-sensitive state secrets from some of the world's most-powerful governments.

I thought this film was ok it is very well paced, Cumberbatch and Bruhl give amazing performances but the film is like a bad version of The Social Network and the film very over dramatic, with some very sloppy camera work . Overall I give the film a 4 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of The Fifth Estate, what would you score it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments and let your voice be heard.

My Review of Escape Plan

So I recently watched The Escape Plan and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado.......

Escapeplanfilmposter.jpg

In what has been in a film fans dream for a very long time Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger team up in this high suspense action thriller. The film follows the story of Ray Breslin (played by Sylvester Stallone), a structural engineer who is incarcerated in the world's most secret and secure prison, aided in his escape by his cellmate Emil Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger)

This film is has been long overdue and it shows. While Stallone and Schwarzenegger are incredible actors their on screen chemistry feels flat and I believe that the film would have been a lot better when both actors were in their prime and the film was way over the top. Take away the actors and you have a campy movie that no one cares about. So I give the film a 5 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Escape Plan, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments and let your voice be heard.

My Top 10 Favorite Sequels of All-Time

In film today, all we usually see are sequels, remakes and reboots, some are better than the original films. Well I happen to like all three and I'm going to bring you My Top 10 Favorite Sequels of all-time. For this list I'm not limiting it to just a second movie but I will also include additional films in the series as well. So without further ado.......

10. Scream 2
Scream 2.jpg

This film is apart of one of my favorite trilogies of all-time. The film follows Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell), now a student at the fictional Windsor College, who becomes the target of a copycat killer using the guise of Ghostface. Sidney is now accompanied by film-geek Randy Meeks (played by Jamie Kennedy), retired deputy sheriff Dewey Riley (played by David Arquette) and news reporter Gale Weathers (played by Courtney Cox). Like the other films in the series Scream 2 combines the violence of the slasher film genre with elements of comedy and "whodunit" mystery while satirizing the cliche of film sequels. I absolutely love this film and it by far exceeds any other film in the horror genre. Scream has a rating of 81% on rottentomatoes.com.

9. Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 2 Poster.jpg

This film is one f the rare cases in which a sequel is better than the original. Spider-Man 2 is directed by Sam Raimi and it stars Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson, James Franco as Harry Osborn, and Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Octavius/Dr. Octopus. Set two years after the events of Spider-Man, the film focuses on Peter Parker struggling to manage both his personal life and his duties as Spider-Man. Meanwhile Dr. Otto Octavius has turned diabolical following a failed experiment and his wife's death. Using mechanical tentacles, Octavius is dubbed "Doctor Octopus" and threatens to endanger the lives New York City's residents forcing Spider-Man to stop him from destroying the city. This is by far the best Spider-Man movie so far and i'll continue to say it until something else happens to make me say otherwise. Spider-Man 2 was nominated for 3 Academy Awards including Best Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects while winning 1 (Best Visual Effects), It also has a rating of 94% on rottentomatoes.com.

8. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Theatrical release poster of film of man sitting on motorbike, wearing black glasses and clothing, holding shotgun almost vertically. Above his head is the capitalised word "Mc-Largehuge"; below him is the film's name

This film is one of my favorite sci-fi films of all-time. Terminator 2 follows Sarah Connor (played by Linda Hamilton) and her ten-year old son John (played by Edward Furlong) as they are pursued by a new, more advanced Terminator, the liquid metal, shapeshifting T-1000 (played by Robert Patrick), sent back in time to 1995 to kill John and prevent him from becoming the leader of the human Resistance against the machines. An older , less advanced Terminator (played by Arnold Schwarznegger) is also sent back in time to protect John. The film is absolutely mind-blowing and James Cameron proves that he is one of the best director of all-time. Terminator 2: Judgement Day was nominated for 6 Academy Awards including Best Cinematography, Make-Up, Sound, Sound Editing, Visual Effects and Film Editing while winning 4 (Best Make-Up, Sound, Sound Editing and Visual Effects), it also has a rating of 92% on rottentomatoes.com.

7. Back to The Future Part 2
Back to the Future Part II.jpg

Here is another one of my favorite sci-fi films of all-time. The Plot of Part 2 picks up were the original one left off. After repairing the damage to history done by his previous travlesdventures, Marty McFly (played by Micheal J. Fox) and his friend Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown (played by Christopher Lloyd) travel to 2015 to prevent McFly's future son from ending up in jail. However, their presence there allows Biff Tannen (played by Thomas F. Wilson) to steal Doc's DeLorean time machine and travel to 1955, where he alters history by making his younger self wealthy. This film is awesome, spectacular and hilarious. Back To The Future Part 2 has a rating of 64% on rottentomatoes.com.

6. Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back
SW - Empire Strikes Back.jpg

Man do I love Sci-Fi, this is the third one on the list. The film is set three years after Star Wars
Episode 4: A New Hope, The Galactic Empire, under the leadership of the villainous Darth Vader (Played by David Prowse and voiced by James Earl Jones), is in pursuit of Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill) and the rest of the Rebel Alliance. While Vader chases a small band of Luke's friends (Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford), Princess Leia Organa (played by Carrie Fisher) and others) across the galaxy, Luke studies the Force under Jedi Master Yoda (played by Frank Oz). But when Vader captures Luke's friends, Luke must decide whether to complete his training and become a full Jedi Knight or to confront Vader and save his friends. This film s one of the first films that I ever saw and I absolutely love it. Star Wars Episode 5 was nominated for 3 Academy Awards including Best Sound Mixing, Original Score and Production Design while winning 1 (Best Sound Mixing), it also has a rating of 97% on rottentomatoes.com.

5. The Lost World: Jurassic Park
JP2.jpg

This film is one of the best sequels to an awesome movie and it is one of the highest grossing sequels of all-time. Four years after the events of Jurassic park, dinosaurs have secretly survived and been allowed to roam free on a deserted island. In between the two films, John Hammond (played by Richard Attenborough) loses control of his company (InGen), to his nephew, Peter Ludlow (played by Arliss Howard). Ludlow assembles a team to bring the animals back to the mainland to bring in revenue and restore the company. Hammond sees a chance to redeem himself for his past mistakes and sends an expedition led by Dr. Ian Malcolm to reach the island before InGen's team can get there. The two groups confront each other in the face of danger and must team up for their own survival. I would argue that this film is almost better than the original. The Lost World: Jurassic Park was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and it also has a rating of 52% on rottentomatoes.com.

4. Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan-
002-the wrath of khan poster art.png

I'm a huge Star Trek fan (not as big as a Trekkie) and this film is the reason why I am. Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan is not only a sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, it is a actually a sequel to an episode in the Star Trek TV series entitled "Space Seed". The pot feature James T. Kirk (played by William Shatner) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise facing off against he genetically-engineered tyrant Khan Noonien Singh (who was the villain in the episode and is played by Ricardo Montalban in both the episode and movie). When Khan escapes from a 15-year exile to exact revenge on Kirk, the crew of the Enterprise must stop him from acquiring a powerful terraforming device named Genesis. The film begins a story arc that continues with Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock and concludes with Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home. Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan has a rating of 91% on rottentomatoes.com.

3. Lord of The Rings: Return of the King-
Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King.jpg

In what is the best film in my favorite trilogy off all-time and what many consider one of the greatest films of all-time, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King continues the story of the fellowship as they have gone their separate ways in the quest to destroy the one ring. As Sauron launches the final stages of his conquest of Middle-earth, Gandalf the Wizard (played by Sir Ian McKellen) and Theoden King of Rohan (played by Bernard Hill) rally their forces to help defend Gondors capital Minas Tirith from the looming threat. Aragron (played by Viggo Mortensen) finally claims the throne of Gondor and, with the aid of Legolas the Elf (played by Orlando Bloom) and Gimli the Dwarf (played by John Rhys-Davies) summons the army of the Dead to help him defeat Sauron. Ultimately, even with full strength of arms, they realize they cannot win; so it comes down to the Hobbits Frodo (played by Elijah Wood) and Sam (played by Sean Astin), to bear the burden of the Ring and deal with the treachery of Gollum (played by Andy Serkis). After a long journey they finally arrive in the dangerous lands of Mordor, seeking to destroy the One Ring in the place it was created , the volcanic fires of Mount Doom. I loved the trilogy and this film in particular and it was the film that made me absolutely love movies. Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King was nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Original Score, Original Song, Visual Effects, Art Direction, Costume Design, Make-Up, Sound Mixing and Editing while winning all 11 awards it was nominated for and it has a rating of 94% on rottentomatoes.com.

2. The Godfather Part 2-
Godfather part ii.jpg

In what is considered the greatest sequel of all-time and what is also a prequel as well, The Godfather Part 2 continues the story of Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino) (the new Don of the Corleone crime family) trying to hold his business ventures togehter from 1958 to 1959. The prequel parts of the film are flashbacks to a younger Vito Corleone (played by Robert DeNiro), from his childhood in Sicily in 1901 to the founding of the Corleone crime family in New York City. I will admit that the film is a little over 3 hours long and for some people I can see why you might get bored or uninterested, but believe me when I say that the film needs to be that long because of the story they are telling. The Godfather Part 2 was nominated for 9 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Adapted Screenplay,  3 for Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Costume Design, Art Direction and Music while winning 6 (Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actor, Art Direction and Music) and it has a rating of 98% on rottentomatoes.com.

1. The Dark Knight-
Dark Knight.jpg

Batman is my favorite superhero and a Batman film tops my list. In this film Batman raises the stakes on hi war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordan (played by Gary Oldman) and D.A. Harvey Dent (played by Aaron Eckhart), Batman (played by Christian Bale) sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the city streets. The partnership proves to be effective,  but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind know to the terrified citizens of Gotham as The Joker (played by Heath Ledger). The Dark Knight was nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actor, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Make-Up, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects while winning only 2 (Best Supporting Actor and Best Sound Editing) and it has a rating of 94% on rottentomatoes.com.
