My Review of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

So I recently watched The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

The Hobbit - The Battle of the Five Armies.jpg

Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch), the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin (played by Richard Armitage)  sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo (played by Martin Freeman)'s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen), the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide - unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

This was an amazing film. First off I want to say I am a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit trilogy and taking one last trip to middle-earth was bittersweet. I say that because this wasn't the greatest film in the world, but it has its moments. In the sense of the good moments their is a lot of action in the film which mainly comes the 45 minute long battle of the five armies and a lot of it good solid clean action, but it sometimes gets muddles togehter and through parts of it you don't know who is winning the battle. The visual effects in the film are fantastic with a few minor hiccups in the complete overuse of cgi. I also really enjoyed the performances in the film especially form Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage, but everyone else just feels flat. The film does have a lot of Easter eggs for the Lord of the Rings franchise, but everything else feels pushed. My two biggest disappointments with the film however are very crucial. One is the use of Smaug and I fell that his story should have been wrapped up in the Desolation of Smaug instead of being wasted for the first 15 minutes of this film. My second one is that every character has their moments, but that's it, a lot of characters have very little development and you're not really given a true conclusion to their own stories other than Bilbo and Thorin. Overall the trilogy only needed to be two films, but that's neither here or there, everything feels muddled together and it's not really given a proper conclusion, but it was pretty emotional taking one last trip to middle-earth. I give The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies an 8 out of 10.
