12-22-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Paramount has, according to Deadline, set four-time The Fast and the Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin to direct the upcoming Star Trek 3 (or 13 depending on your point of view). The new arrives nearly three weeks after word first broke that Roberto Orci would not be taking the director’s chair. Lin’s credits also include his indie debut Better Luck Tomorrow (which he retconned into a The Fast and the Furious prequel of sorts), the Naval drama Annapolis and several key episodes of Dan Harmon’s “Community”. He’ll also be directing the first two episode of “True Detective” season two.  Although a release date has not been specified, it is widely believed that the plan is for the film to hit theaters in 2016, as the year marks the 50th anniversary of the “Star Trek” franchise. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana and John Cho are all expected to reprise their roles as the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Plot details have not yet been revealed, although Orci stated earlier this year that his plan was to set the action in deep space, unlike the relatively Earth-centric J.J. Abrams films. There is no word currently on whether the film will move forward with the same screenplay scripted by Orci, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne or seek a new draft.

I'm not really excited about this choice. Don't get me wrong Justin Lin is an amazing director and I really love what he's done with the Fast and Furious franchise, but this franchise is a little bit out of his wheelhouse. I was honestly hoping for Rupert Wyatt, but eventhough I'm not excited about the choice I'm still looking forward to what Lin can do with the franchise.

On the heels of a new set of character posters, Warner Bros. Pictures has brought online the new trailer for their upcoming conman romance, Focus. We’ve also added the UK trailer, which offers quite a bit of alternate footage in the second half. Check them both out in the players below! Starring Will Smith (I Am Legend, Men in Black) and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, About Time), Focus is written and directed by the Crazy, Stupid, Love pair of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, Focus follows Nicky (Smith), a seasoned master of misdirection who becomes romantically involved with novice con artist Jess (Margot Robbie). As he’s teaching her the tricks of the trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame–now an accomplished femme fatale–shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high stakes racecar circuit. In the midst of Nicky’s latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop… and the consummate con man off his game. Although Focus marks the first onscreen pairing of Margot Robbie and Will Smith, they’re already set for a second major big screen project together as Warner Bros. Pictures has already recruited both stars for David Ayer’s DC Comics antihero team-up, Suicide Squad. In that film, Robbie will play Harley Quinn and Smith will play Deadshot. Also starring Rodrigo Santoro (300, The Last Stand) and Gerald McRaney (The Best of Me, “Longmire”), Focus hits theaters February 27, 2015.

I really enjoyed this trailer. It isn't that different from the first one, but it does show a few new scenes. The look and sound of this movie are pretty cool and this cast is a really great one. I can't wait to see how Smith and Robbie interact with each other and what type of chemistry they will have just to give us an idea how they could play off of each other in the upcoming Suicide Squad.

Warner Bros. Pictures has just revealed a new trailer for director Ron Howard’s upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, starring Chris Hemsworth (Rush, Thor), Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Flags of Our Fathers), Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Inception), Ben Wishaw (I’m Not There, Cloud Atlas), Tom Holland (Locke, The Impossible), Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow, The Company You Keep) and Jordi Molla (Riddick, Bad Boys 2). In the player below, you can check out the UK version of the new trailer. The domestic version is slightly different, but not yet available in an embeddable format. We’ll update this story with that version as soon as it is made available. Set in the winter of 1820, In the Heart of the Sea follows the New England whaling ship Essex as it is assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. In the Heart of the Sea reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down. In the Heart of the Sea hits theaters March 15, 2015.

This was a really great trailer. It had a lot more action and it gives a better look into what the film is going to be about. Look I'll be the first to admit that Moby Dick isn't the most entertaining book in the world, but this film is supposed to show how the myth and inspiration came about so I'm curious to see how everything plays out.

Warner Bros. has released the first official image from Guy Ritchie’s big screen adaptation of ’60s TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E., with super spies Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill), Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) and Gaby Teller (Alicia Vikander) relaxing with a drink and looking a little dinged up with a few cuts and bruises and you can check it out below. Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe. The film stars Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Jared Harris, Elizabeth Debicki, Luca Calvani and Hugh Grant. It will be released on August 14, 2015.

This is a pretty cool image. It gives us our first look at what these characters will look like and it gives off a little bit of the tone of the film. Both Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill are very young and talented actors and this could be their real big breakout film and if the film is successful then look for these guys to be in a lot more serious films.

In another blow against theatrical distribution, the planned return of Pee-Wee Herman to the big screen will now instead be available on computers, tablets and other devices as The Wrap breaks the news that the Judd Apatow-produced movie will now be seen on Netflix. The untitled Pee-Wee Herman film, which was originally set up at Apatow’s production home of Universal Pictures, will put Paul Reubens back in his most beloved role. Reubens created Pee-Wee while doing improv comedy with the Groundlings during the ’70s, eventually bringing him to the state with “The Pee-Wee Herman Show.” After appearances on shows like “Saturday Night Live” and “Late Night with David Letterman,” Pee Wee hit the big screen with 1985′s Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, the first feature film directed by Tim Burton, which led to the popular Saturday morning show, “Pee Wee’s Playhouse.” The 1988 sequel Big Top Pee-Wee After a 1991 arrest, Reubens retired Pee Wee for a number of years but there have been many plans to make another movie, but they only started to come to fruition in 2010 when Reubens returned to the stage for a hugely successful live show called “The Pee-Wee Herman Stage Show: The Return,” and Judd Apatow became interested in producing another film.  Reubens co-wrote the script of the planned movie with Paul Rust.  Of course, this movie has been in talks for almost five years now, so who knows if it will actually happen, but Netflix has already made available both Pee-wee films as well as his Saturday morning show on their service.

I'm not really surprised to hear this news. First off I honestly we don't even know if the project will even happen so that's one thing to keep in mind, but also between the first two films they weren't that successful at the box office so I'm surprised that a studio would take a shot at a new film. In all honesty I really enjoy the first film, but I don't want to see another Pee-wee film. I feel like however that Netflix is the right place for this film to come out and hopefully it's really successful.
