Weekend Movie News 12-12-14 to 12-14-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

When the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted online two weeks ago, one of the many things fans were quick to notice was the lack of characters from the original trilogy. Speaking with Yahoo!, original and returning cast member Mark Hamill talked about the reasoning behind this. “This is about the new generation of characters; I think that’s the most important thing. It’s the opening act of a whole new approach to the storytelling. So I never thought that the stories would be – first of all, I never thought I’d be involved in it again, period. And then when George [Lucas] said that they wanted to do more, I rightly assumed that it wouldn’t be our story, because we had a beginning, a middle, and an end. This must be our offspring and the current generation, with us there lending the kind of support that Peter Cushing and Alec Guinness did in the original. So no, that didn’t surprise me.  And I mean, I’m one of those people where I just think, ‘Keep me out of it. I’ll ruin it, I’m sure!’ [Laughs] I’ll show up and just ruin the whole thing.”

Hamill also spoke about the practical effects used in the film, including the previously-dubbed “Ball droid,” which we now know is called BB-8 and Hamill reveals is a practical effect. “They never cease to amaze me with what they’re able to come up with, you know? I said, ‘How are you ever gonna top R2-D2, the most adorable droid in movie history?’ And then they have this new one. I can’t even tell you his name, but you saw it in the trailer, and when they were demonstrating how they did this thing, live on set — because it’s not CGI, that’s a live prop — I was just amazed. They let me play around with it. [Laughs] I was running it all around at the creature shop up in Pinewood. I’m telling you, it’s an absolute delight. And not having thought that I’d ever go back there, to go back into that world, is just – I get the chills. It’s just so much fun.” Also starring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong and Miltos Yerolemou, the J.J. Abrams-directed film will debut in theaters on December 18, 2015.

I really love and agree with these comments. Mark Hamill knows what to say and what to do when promoting a film. I agree with him in the sense that they are trying to show us the new chracters that we'll be seeing for as long as they are making Star Wars movies and not have to rely on the original three as much. I'm also really not that surprised with BB-8 being a practical eefect simply because these new films were going back to practical effects which made the original films feel so real and fun. All I can hope for is that in the next trailer we get to see the original three with a little bit more insight into the plot.

Marvel Studios has released new details on both the plot and characters for their upcoming Ant-Man movie. The new synopsis reads as follows: “The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man. Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.” Marvel has also revealed the names of the remaining cast members in the film and confirmed a few more additions that were never reported, including: Bobby Cannavale as Paxton, Michael Peña as Luis, Judy Greer as Maggie, Tip “Ti” Harris as Dave, David Dastmalchian as Kurt, Wood Harris as Gale, and  Jordi Mollà as Castillo. Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket, and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym. The Peyton Reed-directed film will open in theaters on July 17,  2015.

This is an amazing synopsis. I honestly feel that Marvel is doing everything right with this film by making it a heist film. We've seen them change up styles before (like Captain America: The Winter Soldier which felt like a 70's political thriller). This is the perfect avenue to go with the film and I think it will work well. I'm excited for the film now more than I ever have been before.

We’re still four years away from the release of Shazam, but that isn’t stopping Dwayne Johnson from talking about his role of Black Adam in the film. Though Adam has been an arch-enemy of Shazam in the source material for a number of years, the character has taken on more of an “anti-hero” role in recent years which Johnson says will translate into his performance in the film. Speaking on Twitter, Johnson had this to say about it: @TheRock Can't wait to play BLACK ADAM. We'll find that anti-hero balance of ruthless rip your throat out w/ wonderful charm.. #ROCKTALK @Dosteguin. Jack the Giant Slayer scribe Darren Lemke is currently penning the script for Shazam, which is set to be released April 5, 2019, just a month before Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War Part II. The film tells the story of teenaged Billy Batson, who transforms into the superhero when he says the magic word “Shazam!”

I'm really glad to see some excitement from an actor for a role. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is known as the most electrifying man in all of sports entertainment so he knows a little bit about excitement. I feel that this is the perfect role for him to be in a comic book movie and hopefully his excitement can help lead to the films success.

With Josh Brolin recently telling us to expect “Thanos against everyone,” a lot of fans were hoping this would mean a full-on Guardians of the Galaxy/Avengers crossover come Avengers: Infinity War, but as James Gunn explained to Screen Junkies, a two-team team-up isn’t likely. “[We're] trying to make [Avengers] effect it as little as possible,” said Guardians helmer Gunn when asked how much the dark tone of Avengers: Age of Ultron would effect Guardians of the Galaxy 2. “We really are separate from the Avengers, and I don’t think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all this. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save. Earth is the Avengers’ province. Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it’s gonna happen.” While it may have been an idea at one point to have a massive team-up, the quirky comedic sensibility of Guardians makes it an odd juxtaposition with the rest of the MCU. If the first film was any indication, we would definitely say Dave Bautista’s Drax and Brolin’s Thanos are on a collision course–not to mention some unresolved issues between the Mad Titan and his adopted daughter Gamora (Zoe Saldana)–yet that may not affect the two Infinity War films any more than the battle of New York in Avengers affected Guardians (pretty much nil). Infinity stones have been the McGuffin that ties all of Marvel’s films together, but the success of Gunn’s vision proves he doesn’t need Captain America or Iron Man to get butts in the seats. One thing fans CAN expect from Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is more of Star-Lord’s outlaw mentor Yondu, as well as Sean Gunn’s Kraglin. “Listen, Michael Rooker is my good friend,” Gunn stated. “Where would I be without Michael Rooker by my side on a film project. I haven’t made a movie yet without him. Who knows? There’s a good chance we’ll see at least a little bit more Yondu…. And Kraglin, my brother! I love those ravagers, they’re one of my favorite parts of the movie.” Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be released on May 5, 2017, while Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 opens on May 4, 2018.

I honestly don't know what to say about these comments. On one hand I want to believe Gunn when he says that a crossover isn't likely, but I don't want to believe him becuase putting the two together would be a massive movie and could make tons of money at the box office. See I think that the Guardians could survive on their own, but how cool would it be to put to oblivious people like Thor and Drax onscreen togehter or a possible Groot and Hulk team-up or seeing Rocket Raccoon and Tony Stark go back and forth with hilarious insults. All I can say is that either way the Guardians are in a great position and I can't wait to see what the future holds.

Legendary Pictures has adjusted their upcoming schedule, retitling Skull Island to Kong: Skull Island and moving the release from November 4, 2016 to March 10, 2017. Kong: Skull Island will now open the same day as 20th Century Fox’s animated Mumbai Musical and just one week after James Mangold’s untitled Wolverine sequel. The following plot synopsis has also been revealed, which teases a “new, distinct timeline” for the King Kong franchise: In the spirit of its worldwide blockbuster Godzilla, Legendary Pictures presents a bold new take on the mythos of another iconic beast with Kong: Skull Island, which stars Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers and Thor series). Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) and written by John Gatins (Flight) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla), Kong: Skull Island will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline. Thomas Tull (Godzilla, The Dark Knight, Pacific Rim) and Jon Jashni (Godzilla, Warcraft) will produce and Alex Garcia (Godzilla) will executive produce. The film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D by Universal Pictures.

I am not surprised by this change at all. It was going to have to go against Doctor Strange and while is a little unknown, but it's still a Marvel film and we all know their track record. The new released date puts the film in a great position to make a lot of money and I cannot wait to see a King Kong origin film.
