7-2-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Sony Pictures Classics has debuted the new trailer for director Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher, the November 14 release starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller and Anthony Michael Hall. The film tells the dark and fascinating story of the unlikely and ultimately tragic relationship between an eccentric multi-millionaire and two champion wrestlers.

When Olympic Gold Medal winning wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) is invited by wealthy heir John du Pont (Steve Carell) to move on to the du Pont estate and help form a team to train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics at his new state-of-the-art training facility, Schultz jumps at the opportunity, hoping to focus on his training and finally step out of the shadow of his revered brother, Dave (Mark Ruffalo). Driven by hidden needs, du Pont sees backing Schultz's bid for Gold and the chance to "coach" a world-class wrestling team as an opportunity to gain the elusive respect of his peers and, more importantly, his disapproving mother (Vanessa Redgrave).

Flattered by the attention and entranced by du Pont's majestic world, Mark comes to see his benefactor as a father figure and grows increasingly dependent on him for approval. Though initially supportive, du Pont's mercurial personality turns and he begins to lure Mark into an unhealthy lifestyle that threatens to undermine his training. Soon du Pont's erratic behavior and cruel psychological game-play begin to erode the athlete's already shaky self-esteem. Meanwhile du Pont becomes fixated on Dave, who exudes the confidence both he and Mark lack, knowing that these are things even his money cannot buy. Fueled by du Pont's increasing paranoia and alienation from the brothers, the trio is propelled towards a tragedy no one could have foreseen.

Wow this teaser is intense. This film looks like Oscar bait and rightfully so. Steve Carell is virtually unrecognizable and Channing Tatum looks like all of his hard work has paid off. The film looks really interesting and amazing and I can't wait to see it.

Universal Pictures' Fast & Furious 7 is racing to a new release date, one week earlier. The James Wan film will now hit theaters Friday, April 3, 2015 instead of on April 10. Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson, Tony Jaa, Kurt Russell, Nathalie Emmanuel, Djimon Hounsou, Lucas Black, John Brotherton, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster, Fast & Furious 7 continues the global exploits in the franchise built on speed with Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel returning as producers. The April 3 date has Fast & Furious 7 going up against the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Longest Ride. Although the latest entry in Wan's former horror franchise, Insidious: Chapter 3, was scheduled for the April 3 date, it has just been moved to May 29, 2015.

I really like this news. I like it simply because we get to see Fast & Furious 7 a week earlier. Even before the death of Paul Walker I was looking forward to this film and now with him tragically passing away I'm curious to see how it is all handled. This is also a good move simply because it is going to crush the box office for a month until The Avengers: Age of Ultron comes out in May.

Speaking of moving release dates, Focus Features has moved back its 2015 release of Insidious: Chapter 3 from April 3, 2015 to May 29, 2015. Insidious: Chapter 3, finally, marks the latest entry in the horror franchise. It will open against Paramount Animation's Monster Trucks.

This is a really smart move. Knowing that it would have been up against Fast & Furious 7 and wouldn't make hardly any money is a great move to go on a new date to have no competition whatsoever. I really enjoyed the first two films and I'm looking forward to this film.

Despite the previous two films in the series brandishing an "R," The Expendables 3 has officially received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA for "violence including intense sustained gun battles and fight scenes, and for language." The first film was rated R for "strong action and bloody violence throughout, and for some language," while the second film was rated R for "strong bloody violence throughout."

Opening in theaters on August 15, the action film stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, Glen Powell and Kelsey Grammer.

In The Expendables 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

I think this is a really stupid idea. I mean both movies were rated R and they were actually pretty cool, but this is just going to make the movie a little bit less interesting. I mean the film is supposed to feel like and 80's action movie and the good ones were rated R but this makes it feel like a politically correct 2000's film.

Tina Fey continues to load on the movie projects following the end of her NBC series "30 Rock" and the latest one being announced is an "Untitled Witch Project" for Walt Disney Pictures in which Fey will star and produce alongside Allison Shearmur (The Hunger Games).

It's being stressed that this movie is not the rumored sequel to Disney's 1993 comedy Hocus Pocus, starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. The project is in early development at Disney with Tendo Nagendo overseeing the project at the studio.

Before then, Fey will appear in the Shawn Levy dramedy This is Where I Leave You, which Warner Bros. is releasing on September 19, and is reteaming with Amy Poehler for next year's comedy The Nest.

This is pretty cool to hear. Tina Fey is one of the best comedians in the business and she is an awesome actor. Now if this ends up not being the Hocus Pocus remake then it'll be interesting to see Tina Fey step into a role like this. If it does end up being the remake then I have a feeling that Amy Poehler will join soon.
