7-10-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Even though there are already a number of heroes and villains populating its cast, might we be seeing another giant-sized villain appear in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? Bleeding Cool has gotten hold of a rumor from a source who claims to have seen designs for a version of the killing machine Doomsday for the highly-anticipated film. Even though the character was teased in the bonus features on the Man of Steel Blu-ray, treat this one as a rumor for now and check back for any potential confirmation.

Created by Dan Jurgens for the 1992 event series "The Death of Superman," Doomsday is a genetically engineered monster that has the distinction of being the character that killed Superman. He has appeared a number of other times in the comics despite perishing himself, and even took on the role of the primary antagonist for a season of "Smallville."

Starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter and Scoot McNairy, the DC Comics film brings together the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight — for the first time on the big screen. Directed by Zack Snyder from a script by Chris Terrio, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives in theaters on May 6, 2016.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this. I feel that the film should focus on Batman and Superman bickering throughout the film and then culminating in a fight and then they team up to stop Lex Luthor and then maybe introduce Doomsday in the post-credit scenes. But it's untelling with the way the films production has gone so far.

Universal Pictures has released the trailer for director Angelina Jolie's Unbroken. The December 25 release is an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis "Louie" Zamperini (Jack O'Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand's enormously popular book, Unbroken brings to the big screen Zamperini's unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.

Starring alongside O'Connell are Domhnall Gleeson and Finn Wittrock as Phil and Mac—the airmen with whom Zamperini endured perilous weeks adrift in the open Pacific—Garrett Hedlund and John Magaro as fellow POWs who find an unexpected camaraderie during their internment, Alex Russell as Zamperini's brother, Pete, and in his English-language feature debut, Japanese actor Miyavi as the brutal camp guard known only to the men as "The Bird."

This trailer is intense. The film also looks amazing visually and dramatically. Angelina Jolie appears to have an Oscar-worthy film on her hands. I feel that the film is Oscar bait but if it's amazing then I'm ok with that and this trailer has gotten me excited for the film.

Production has official wrapped on director James Wan's Fast & Furious 7 and the team has just shared the following message, celebrating the end of the production and again paying tribute to the late Paul Walker, whose Brian O'Conner will ride one more time when the film hits theaters April 3, 2015. They also unveiled a new photo of star Vin Diesel, which you can check out in the gallery viewer below.

Today we completed the last shot in the production of FAST & FURIOUS 7.

We wanted to take this moment to express how thankful we are for your support. We felt the love and strength from our fans throughout this journey, and it’s because of you that we got here. There was a time when we didn’t know how we could go on, or even if we should. But we listened to you, and you inspired us not only to keep going but to try and make the best FAST & FURIOUS movie yet. Our FAST family has been together for almost fifteen years now and has grown a lot in that time. From the start, Vin has been our leader who feels what’s right for FAST in his gut and in his heart. When we had to stop production last year, Vin gathered us back together and moved us forward when we needed it most. He led us to this day. Some of us have been here from the very beginning. Vin, Michelle, Jordana and our producer Neal all go back to that first little movie we shot on the streets of LA. We came back to LA in FAST 7, and it was an especially emotional homecoming for those who’ve grown up with each other since that first shoot.  There are those we count as brothers who we gathered along the way and are with us again: Dwayne, Tyrese, Luda, Lucas and our writer, Chris. We’ve got some new additions this time in Jason, Kurt, Djimon, Nathalie and our director, James. Caleb and Cody joined us to honor their brother and help complete his work. Our family is big and strong but it won’t ever quite be whole again without Paul. All of us -- those who’ve been here from the start and those whose first FAST film is 7 -- wanted to create a special film for him and for you. We believe we have. Thank you for being there for us. You are the biggest part of our family, and we couldn’t have gotten here without you. The countdown to April 3 begins.

With love,

Your FAST & FURIOUS Family

Wow this is a pretty emotional statement. I honestly don't know how the cast and crew could go on without Paul Walker but now they've completed filming. My condolences still go out to Paul Walkers family for this awful tragedy, but just like a wheel the world keeps on spinning. I'm really looking forward to the film and I can't wait to see how they honor Paul Walker.

The stars rumored for the roles last month, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that both Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling will lead Shane Black's 70s comedy-noir, The Nice Guys. What's more, Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up the rights and will see the project through production. Black, the man behind Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3, is both writing and directing The Nice Guys, which is set in Los Angeles in the 1970s, pairing a fighter and a private detective as they attempt to solve a murder. Crowe recently starred in Darren Aronofsky's Noah and is soon set to make his directorial debut with The Water Diviner. Gosling's own first directorial feature, Lost River, stars Christina Hendricks, Matt Smith, Eva Mendes, Saoirse Ronan and Ben Mendelsohn and just premiered at Cannes.

This is an odd pairing but I like it. It'll be interesting to see how these two will handle a comedy together. Both are some of the talented actors in the business and I like this will be great to see them step out of their comfort zone. Also it's a Shane Black film so I really don't have any worries.

Gary Oldman has lined up a role opposite Kevin Costner in Millennium Films' upcoming Criminal. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star is in talks to play the villain of the sci-fi tinged thriller. Criminal, which is being directed by Ariel Vroman (The Iceman) from a script by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg, stars Costner as a prison inmate who is implanted with the memories of a dead CIA operative in order to prevent a large-scale catastrophe. Oldman starred earlier this year in José Padilha's RoboCop and can be seen coming up in the action drama Child 44, starring opposite Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and Joel Kinnaman.

This is excellent casting. Gary Oldman has been a better villain than a hero and this sounds like a great film to add to his resume. The film also sounds really intriguing and I'm also curious to see Kevin Costner in this type of role.
