Weekend Movie News 8-15-14 to 8-17-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

We're just over a year away from the release of Star Wars: Episode VII and today seems to also be the day that spoilers are kicking in high gear. A number of websites have revealed what they allege to be pretty significant details about the December 18, 2015 release. At this point, it's hard to tell, assuming they are real, which of these spoilers are just fun updates and which ruin significant elements of the film's plot and/or other surprises. As such, read on both with caution and with a grain of salt.

First up, Latino Review has several plot details, building on what has been previously been alleged regarding Luke's missing hand serving as the story's MacGuffin. The search for Luke Skywalker, then, teams Daisy Ridley and John Boyega's characters with Han Solo and Chewbacca (who have passed the Millennium Falcon along to Oscar Isaacs' character). The new rumors reveal that Luke is a captive of the Inquisitors, the villains of the upcoming "Star Wars Rebels" television series. Sort of a Sith task force, the Inquistors used to deal directly with Darth Vader and seem to have captured Luke shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi. What's a neat surprise, if true, is that flashbacks will actually show off a time period prior to the events of the original Star Wars and we'll get to see Darth Vader on the big screen again! What's more, Billie Lourd is rumored to be playing a young Princess Leia in some of those flashback scenes.

Next up, Badass Digest has a few more descriptive details, claiming that there's a central Inquisitor villain who is a half-metal cyborg and the owner of the hand we just saw officially revealed by J.J. Abrams. They also allege that we'll see a planet of both ice and forest where Imperial Snowtroopers are building a superweapon.

Finally, Indie Revolver has published alleged concept art of Han Solo in both a Hoth-like uniform and also in a look a bit more reminiscent of the long coat he wore on Endor. Badass Digest then chimes in again, claiming that Solo and Chewbacca are now in charge of a Super Star Destroyer.

Once again, just about all of this should be considered rumor-only for the time being, especially given Abrams' tendency for secrecy and false leads. What is known is that the film, written by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong'o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson and Christina Chong, takes place 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi and hits the big screen December 18, 2015.

Ok we have a lot to get to so let's start with the first rumor. I think the rumor from Latino Review is true  simply becuase it does make a lot of sense for these events to have happened and I hope we see Vader back on the big screen again. Secondly the rumor about seeing a planet of forest and ice is half right. I do believe that we will see a planet of ice in the sense there has been a rumor that we'll be returning to Hoth which I'll enjoy. But I don't think we'll see a forest planet like perhaps Endor in the next film. The final rumor does make a little sense if the first one is true and it'll be cool to see Han and Chewie driving a Super Star Destroyer and it'll be interesting to see how they got the ship.

Next summer, Twentieth Century Fox will bring us a rebooted version of Marvel's first family The Fantastic Four and star Michael B. Jordan, who has been the most vocal of the four, has once again opened up about the film, this time speaking about how it will blend "old" and "new" to create their "fresh" take on the series. "It's been a lot of fun," Jordan revealed in an interview with The Source. "Johnny Storm is such an iconic character. There's a lot of personality traits and things to him that people are really going to look forward to seeing. Got a lot of original Johnny stuff in there and then you have - not a NEW take but a fresh take. We have a different take on different things as well. I could go on and on about it but I think it’s something that people will enjoy."

Jordan was also asked about taking on a role that current Captain America Chris Evans brought to life on the big screen nine years ago, saying: "I did get a chance to talk to Chris about it, I met him at this event and he was basically like, 'Man I can't give you anything.' He said, 'You're great, you're awesome. Just do your thing. And enjoy it. It's gonna be fun.' That was just a really cool piece of information, words of encouragement from the guy who killed the role. He really did a really great job and hats off to him with how talented he is cause he's doing an amazing job with 'Captain America.' I really enjoy those films as well so that's kind of pretty much where that was."

Jordan is joined by Jamie Bell, Kate Mara and Miles Teller who will play the titular team in the upcoming film. Toby Kebbell will also appear as Victor Von Doom along with Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Franklin Storm and Tim Blake Nelson as Harvey Elder, aka The Mole Man. The Fantastic Four is set for release on June 19, 2015.

It's really great to hear this. Micheal B. Jordan is a talented young actor who has a bright future in front of him. I'm glad that he'll be bringing his own style to the character and i think he'll be amazing in the rle. Look I know the film is riling up the comic book universe and I'll admit I've been skeptical myself, but I'm going to give the film a shot and I hope that it's awesome.

Two new posters are now online for directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly's Dumb and Dumber To. Actors Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels each tweeted their respective character's poster with an obvious play on the poster for Universal's recent hit, Lucy. Check them both out in the gallery viewer below. The sequel also stars Rachel Melvin, Kathleen Turner, Brady Bluhm, Laurie Holden, Steve Tom and Rob Riggle. In the film, Lloyd and Harry head on a road trip to find a child Harry never knew he had and the responsibility neither should ever, ever be given. Dumb and Dumber To hits theaters November 14.

I absolutely love these posters. It really does capture the essence of both of the characters. I also love that they are making fun of a movie that I hated.  ]I honestly cannot tell you how excited I am for this film to come out.

Ving Rhames, who has appeared in all the "Mission: Impossible" movie so far as Luther Stickell, will return in Mission: Impossible 5. The film's director, Christopher McQuarrie, tweeted the following: "Welcome back, Mr. Rhames. cc: @TomCruise @simonpegg @Renner4Real #MI5Diary" As noted by McQuarrie in the tweet, he's joining Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg in the December 25, 2015 release. Rebecca Ferguson will reportedly play the female lead, while Alec Baldwin is said to play the head of the CIA in the new film. The last installment, the Brad Bird-directed Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, opened in December of 2011 and earned an impressive $694.7 million worldwide on a budget of $145 million. Rhames had more of a cameo appearance in that film instead of a full role.

I'm really excited to hear this. Ving Rhames is like Tom Cruise in the series as he is a "staple". You can't have a Mission Impossible film without Ving Rhames. I hope that he has a bigger role than he had in the last film becuase the last film just didn't feel the same without him on screen.

Speaking of returning cast members, Total Film (via CBM) has confirmed that everyone’s favorite astrophysicist from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Dr. Erik Selvig as played by Stellan Skarsgard, will return for the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, reprising the role he played in both "Thor" films as well as the first "Avengers" movie. "I'm going to be in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, a small appearance. It's something really nice," the actor revealed.

Skarsgard went on to reveal that his next appearance could be sans clothes just like one of his scenes in Thor: The Dark World. "Yeah, I was naked again," he said. "They called my agent and said, 'Do you think Stellan will mind being naked?' My agent laughed his head off. Yeah, I almost insist!" The outlet then asked what he could say about the upcoming "Avengers" sequel, and although it's not much, he provides an interesting idea of where to expect him in the film's plot. "First of all, I don't know what I'm allowed to say, but usually they call me in if they need something explained. There's a lot of explanations to do when it comes to that universe."

Opening in theaters on May 1, 2015, Joss Whedon’s highly-anticipated sequel stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, James Spader, Cobie Smulders, Thomas Kretschmann and Paul Bettany.

I'm also excited to hear this news. Besides the main cast, Stellan Skargard as Erik Selvig is one of my favorite characters. I don't care how big or small the role is as long as he is on screen.
