8-5-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Having already rocked the box office this year in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which has grossed over $713 million at the global box office, Steve Rogers isn't taking any time off as he'll appear in next year's Avengers: Age of Ultron and then his third solo film in 2016. Speaking with Yahoo!, returning directors Anthony and Joe Russo teased some of their plans for the upcoming third film, which will focus at least in part on Steve's search for childhood friend Bucky Barnes, the infamous Winter Soldier.

"The character was invented for an explicitly political purpose. So it’s hard to get away from that nature," Anthony said. The pair also teased that they'll be building off of "Winter Soldier" for the upcoming third film, saying they will be "bringing some new elements to the table that will give us a twist on Winter Soldier."

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will debut digitally on August 19 and on DVD and Blu-ray on September 9. Captain America 3 is scheduled for release on May 6, 2016, the same day as Warner Bros.' own Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

This is really great to hear. One of the reasons why I loved Captain America: The Winter Soldier was because of the introduction of the character of the Winter Soldier and I can't wait to see how they expand on his story. I absolutely loved the Captain America: The Winter Soldier and I can't wait for the third film.

Following news last month that 21st Century Fox had made a formal proposal to Time Warner to combine the two companies for $80 billion, 21st Century Fox now says they have withdrawn the offer. Here is the full statement:

21st Century Fox today announced that it has withdrawn its proposal to acquire Time Warner Inc.

Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch commented:

"We viewed a combination with Time Warner as a unique opportunity to bring together two great companies, each with celebrated content and brands. Our proposal had significant strategic merit and compelling financial rationale and our approach had always been friendly. However, Time Warner management and its Board refused to engage with us to explore an offer which was highly compelling. Additionally, the reaction in our share price since our proposal was made undervalues our stock and makes the transaction unattractive to Fox shareholders. These factors, coupled with our commitment to be both disciplined in our approach to the combination and focused on delivering value for the Fox shareholders, has led us to withdraw our offer.

"21st Century Fox's future has never been brighter. The strength of our leading franchises, combined with the power of our emerging growth businesses and the leadership positions of our international enterprises put us on a path for even greater success."

Time Warner issued the following statement in response to 21st Century Fox's withdrawal:

"Time Warner’s Board and management team are committed to enhancing long-term value and we look forward to continuing to deliver substantial and sustainable returns for all stockholders. Time Warner is well positioned for success with our iconic assets, including the world’s leading premium television brand, the world’s strongest ad-supported cable network group, and the world’s largest film and television studio. We thank our stockholders for their continued support."

I'm really disappointed to hear this news. When I heard about the number of $80 billion I was shocked and really surprised. But I also imagined the possibilities that could come of this deal. I mean think about the possibility of Batman (owned by Warner Bros./Time Warner) vs. Wolverine (owned by 20th Century Fox/21st century Fox). Thinking of that gave me chills and I wish the deal would have went down but hopefully down the line both can revisit the deal.

Production has officially wrapped on director Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World! Trevorrow just posted the following image to this Twitter account, celebrating the conclusion of production and teasing the jaws of a hungry T. Rex (maybe he just likes eating wraps?). Check it out below!

Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on June 12, 2015, the anticipated movie stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D'Onofrio, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Judy Greer, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus and Andy Buckley. Jurassic World is a sci-fi terror adventure set 22 years after the horrific events of the original Jurassic Park.

"Wrap," was all Trevorrow posted, along with the below image of a production slate surrounded by some monstrous jaws. You can check out the photo below.

I really like this photo. I'm really glad to see a T-Rex (well sorta). Look this film has the chance to be great and bad at the same time, but I have complete faith in Trevorrow and the cast that he's assembled for the film and I honestly cannot wait for the film.

Stoney Lake Entertainment has debuted the trailer for Left Behind, the Vic Armstrong-directed action adventure that stars Nicolas Cage, Chad Michael Murray, Cassi Thomson, Nicky Whelan, Lea Thompson, Jordan Sparks, Quinton Aaron and Martin Klebba. Check it out in the player below, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies.

Left Behind follows Rayford Steele (Nicolas Cage), who is piloting a commercial airliner just hours after the Rapture when millions of people around the globe simply vanish. Thirty thousand feet over the Atlantic, Rayford is faced with a damaged plane, terrified passengers, and a desperate desire to get back to his family. On the ground, his daughter, Chloe Steele (Cassi Thomson) is among those left behind, forced to navigate a world of madness as she searches for her lost mother and brother.

The movie is based on the New York Times bestselling book series of the same name, co-authored by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye. Look for it in theaters October 3.

This is actually not a bad trailer. When I first heard about the film I thought it was gong to be a real campy film and be stupid but it seems like it might actually be really good. I know Nicolas Cage is a nutcase but he's a really good actor and this feels like a perfect film for him to continue his great year that he has been having.

One project we continue to hear rumblings about online is The Legend of Conan, a direct sequel to 1984's Conan the Barbarian with Arnold Schwarzenegger once again playing the character, though in the twilight of his years. Last we heard, writer Andrea Berloff had been hired to pen the script for the film, but now, in an interview with The Arnold Fans, producer Fredrik Malmberg says a script polish will be delivered shortly and they're hoping to start production in Spring 2015. "We'll probably have this turned in around September after the holiday," Malmberg said. "And then we'll take it to the studio and if they're happy, we can hopefully start (production) in the Spring (2015)."

Malmberg went on to say that though they hadn't chosen a director for the project just yet, a number of candidates have come forward expressing interest, ranging from "old great names" to "new fresh faces," as he puts it. He also revealed that they would like for The Legend of Conan to be Schwarzenegger's next film following the upcoming Terminator reboot. "Arnold wants that. I would like that and I know everyone from the studio side would like that but it's all in the script.  We need to get the script where it's right and ready to go. In the movie world, nowadays, when a movie is a go movie, it happens very quickly. It's up to Universal to set the date for it to be released but personally, I don't think it has to be a summer movie. I think there's plenty of examples of big event movies being released in the winter like the Matrix movies and The Lord of the Rings. I can see this being a winter movie as well as a summer movie. This iconic role of Arnold as Conan is so big that it can be year round."

Universal Pictures were previously aiming for a 2014 release for the film, though we would expect the film to land in theaters in 2016 at the earliest.

This is really good news to hear. I really like how Arnold is going back to the films that made his career what it is today and Conan was the one that Started it all. I'm also gald to hear that the film will hopefully begin filming here soon  because I really want to see this film and how awesome Arnold will be as a old man Conan.
