8-12-14/8-13-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

24 hours after the shocking news of Robin Williams' suicide, another acting great has passed away. Ms. Lauren Bacall, the Oscar-nominated actress who was a staple during the "Golden Age of Hollywood," suffered a massive stroke at her home and died on Tuesday morning.

Bacall may be best known among cinephiles for her work with her future husband Humphrey Bogart in movies like To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and Key Largo. Later, she'd be a part of all-star ensemble casts for Sex and the Single Girl (1964) and Murder on the Orient Express (1974).

Despite receiving only a single Oscar nomination for her supporting role in The Mirror Has Two Faces, Bacall received an honorary Oscar in 2010. She received many other accolades including a Golden Globe and SAG award (both for The Mirror Has Two Faces) as well as Career and Lifetime Achievement awards from the National Board of Review and the Broadcast Film Critics. Bacall leaves behind three children, two from Bogart and one from Robards.

This is really sad ti hear. I wasn't to familiar with Bacall's work but she is from the Golden Age of Hollywood and she had an amazing filmography. Her family has my deepest condolences.

MGM and Paramount's upcoming Timur Bekmambetov-directed remake of Ben-Hur may have found a leading man in star Tom Hiddleston. Deadline reports that the Marvel's The Avengers actor is being eyed for the part of Judah Ben-Hur, played in the 1959 William Wyler version by Charlton Heston. Set for release on February 26, 2016, the new take on Ben-Hur was originally scripted by Keith Clarke (The Way Back, with revisions by Academy Award-winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave). It is based on Lew Wallace's 1880 epic novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of The Christ."

The film is said to return to the heart of the epic novel with a focus on the nature of faith. The story follows a falsely-accused nobleman who survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his best friend who betrayed him. Both must come to choose between retribution or forgiveness.

This is really interesting to hear. I'm a huge fan of the original film and of Heston's performance as Judah Ben-Hur. I'm also a big fan of Tom Hiddleston and I'm really glad he's taking these types of roles as he'll also be playing Hank Williams Sr. in another film. I can't wait to see how Hiddleston plays the character.

Warner Bros. has dueling scripts for a Aquaman feature film currently in the works. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Will Beall (Gangster Squad) is working on one version while Kurt Johnstad (300: Rise of an Empire) is doing another. The plan is said to be to develop both scripts in tandem until a decision can be made as to which version will ultimately head to the big screen.

Aquaman's first comic book appearance was in 1941's "More Fun Comics" #73. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, Aquaman went on to become a founding member of the Justice League of America two decades later. Although the character has never before made it to the big screen, Jason Momoa is all but confirmed to appear as Aquaman in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

I really don't like this. I honestly think that they'll just combine the two scripts anyway so why make two different scripts. Just make one script and go with it. But the thing is that they'll have plenty of time to complete the script sense Auqaman probably won't get his own film until at least 2017.

Following their announcement of the project in May, Lionsgate and Saban have officially set Power Rangers for release on July 22, 2016! There, it will open opposite Guy Ritchie's King Arthur.

Based on a story by executive producer Roberto Orci (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Star Trek Into Darkness) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.

Saban's "Power Rangers" franchise is the brainchild of Haim Saban, creator and producer of the original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" hit series that launched in 1993. Following its introduction, "Power Rangers" quickly became the most-watched children's television program in the United States and remains one of the top-rated and longest running boys live-action series in television history. The series follows the adventures of a group of ordinary teens who "morph" into superheroes and save the world from evil. It is seen in more than 150 markets around the world, translated into numerous languages and is a mainstay in the most prominent international children's programming blocks.

This is amazing to hear. A few of you all know that I absolutely loved Power Rangers growing up and I'm really looking forward to the film. I'm just excited to hear about the release date and it's a great date to put the movie out on.

There's a number of caveats to a newly-released image of Mark Hamill standing outside a Star Wars: Episode VII sign at Pinewood Studios, but that shouldn't deter fans from getting excited by what appears to be Hamill's new Luke Skywalker look and you can check it out below.

The photo was snapped by Hamill's son, Nathan Hamill, and also features an appearance by "Lava Bear," one of Nathan Hamill's artistic creations (learn more at his official site). It was first hinted that the elder Hamill would have a beard in the new film back in June, although the facial hair has certainly evolved since then into a look rather reminiscent of Sir Alec Guiness' Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Bear in mind, the J.J. Abrams film has been on production hiatus due to Harrison Ford's injury and that there's no hard proof that this is anything close to the final look we'll be seeing on the big screen come December 18, 2015. Still, for fans who have been waiting decades for the return of Luke Skywalker, this particular image is bound to create some big smiles.

As the article said it would bring smiles to fans faces and this photo did. This is really great to see Mark Hamill and the studio where Episode VII is filming. Just knowing that behind Hamill is where one of my most anticipated films of all-time is filming. I honestly cannot wait to see this film.

Newcomer Seth M. Sherwood has signed on to script Millennium Films' upcoming prequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, now going by the title Leatherface (which, confusingly enough, was also the title of the third entry in the horror franchise). The Wrap has the news, reporting that the search is on for a director with production targeted for this winter.

The plan, the outlet reports, is for Leatherface to explore the origins of the horror icon in the 1970s, although the most recent film, Texas Chainsaw 3D, wasn't afraid of flaunting some sizable anachronisms.

Leatherface will mark the eighth overall entry in the franchise, which currently includes, in addition to Tobe Hooper's original, three sequels, a remake, a prequel to the remake and a modern-day “direct sequel”.

This is actually a pretty cool title for the film. Now granted it's already a film title in the franchise but I'm glad to see another film coming. Now I know the films haven't the greatest in the world, the very first film in the franchise in the film is my favorite horror film of all-time so hopefully this new film can be great and rejuvenate the franchise.
