My Review of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Franchise

With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being released this weekend, I thought it would be fitting to review the other films in the franchise. So without further ado...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

After prolonged exposure to radiation, four teenage turtles--Michelangelo (voiced by Robbie Rist and played by Michelan Sisti), Raphael (voiced and played by Josh Pais), Leonardo (played by Brian Tochi and played by David Forman), and Donatello (voiced by Corey Feldman and played by Leif Tilden)--have mutated into ninjas and have begun living in the sewers of a large city. Under the guidance of a ninja master Splinter the Rat (voiced by Kevin Clash and played by Kevin Clash) and television reporter April (payed by Judith Hoag), the Turtles embark on a mission to run crime out of the city and battle the warlord Shredder.

This is actually a really good movie. It has a lot of great humor and a lot of great action. It also has a lot of deep and dark tones that just enhance the story and makes it appelaing to the older viewers. I also thought the voice acting for the turtles and Splinter were amazing and I really liked Judith Hoag and Elias Koteas performances as well. It also did a pretty decent homage to the comics by having enough violence to wet someone's appetite. Mainly the film suffers from being pretty much an ad campaign towards children of telling them that stealing is a bad thing and that the film really makes Shredder out to be a boring and bland villain. Overall the film is enjoyable and it has all of the late 80's/ early 90's nostalgia to please every viewer. I give Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles a 7 out of 10.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze
TMNT 2.jpg

The crime-fighting Turtles -- Michaelangelo (voiced by Robbie Rist  and played by Michelan Sisti), Donatello (voiced by Adam Carl and played by Leif Tilden), Raphael (voiced by Laurie Faso and played by Kenn Troum), and Leonardo (voiced by Brian Tochi and played by Mark Caso) -- return in this quickly made sequel to the popular superheroes' first film. The story concerns arch-enemy Shredder (voiced by David McCharen and played by François Chau and Kevin Nash (as Super Shredder)), who kidnaps nutty professor Jordan Perry (played by David Warner), the man who invented the infamous ooze, in order to use the ooze to destroy the Turtles. Shredder enlists his hapless German shepherd puppy named Rahzar (voiced by Fran Welker and played by Mark Ginther) and a baby snapping turtle named Toko (voiced by Frank Welker and played by Kurt Bryant) and dips them in the ooze to turn them into horrible and imposing ninja warriors. But on the Turtles' side is proficient kick-boxing pizza boy Keno (played by Ernie Reyes Jr.), who uses his moves to help the Turtles stop Shredder and his monster warriors.

This film is pretty horrible. It takes everything that was good from the first film and just makes it flat out boring and stupid. It has a some good humor but most of it is just juvenile and stupid. Also there is almost hardly any violence in the film. I mean Leonardo and Michaelangelo both only use their weapons once apiece Plus the film has pretty horrible dialogue and it suffers from the lack of Casey Jones and it makes a mockery of Bebop and Rocksteady with Toko and Rahzar. Overall the film is just a relly bad film and it has nothing really memorable. I give Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze a 1.5 out of 10.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III
TMNT III film.jpg

This third film in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series finds the half-shelled ninjas traveling back in time to 17th-century Japan in order to save April O'Neil (played by Paige Turco). Once there, they also use their skills to help a rebel army battle an evil leader.

Just like its predecessor it takes everything from the first film and it's just boring and stupid. The franchise literally ran out of gas with this film and it proves it by using the time travel gimmick and it fails miserably. It also doesn't have a very strong or memorable plot with no real big name villain form the lore of the comics. The film has a bland script and it feels like a 3 year-old wrote the script. Overall the film is boring and it just doesn't really do anything interesting for the franchise. I give Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III a 0.5 out of 10.

TMNT

The stars have aligned in an ominous sign, and as a legion of malevolent monsters descends upon New York City to wage war against humanity, the only thing that stands between humankind and certain destruction are four wisecracking turtles with a flair for martial arts and a hearty appetite for pizza.

The film is ok for kids. I really liked the animation direction that the film took and it makes the turtles look simply amazing, but that's really the only thing that the film has going for it. Simply put this film is an absolute disgrace to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. It's not funny in the least little bit, a muddled and uninteresting plot and it takes itself to seriously. Look the film had the potential to be really fun, it was just boring and stupid. I give TMNT a 1 out of 10.

Overall franchise average rating: 2.5
