8-25-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Chris Hemsworth ("Thor" movies, upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Charlie Day ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," upcoming Horrible Bosses 2) are joining New Line Cinema and Warner Bros.' Vacation reboot, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Ed Helms will play Rusty Griswold in the comedy, while Christina Applegate will appear as his wife. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo are set to make cameos. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein wrote the script and are making their directorial debut. The new version of the vacation adventures of the quirky dad and his family will follow Rusty, who now has his own family misadventures on the road.

Hemsworth will reportedly play the husband of Rusty’s sister, Audrey (a role that has not been cast), while Day is expected to cameo as a river rafting guide. Chris Bender, David Dobkin, Jeff Kleeman are producing. Filming is scheduled to start in September.

I think that this is excellent casting. We all already know how funny Charlie Day is (from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), but it'll be interesting to see Chris Hemsworth do a comedy. I'm a huge fan of the Vacation franchise and I can't wait to see how far the characters have come since the last film.

If there's one "Avengers" character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that hasn't gotten his fair share in the spotlight just yet, it's Hawkeye. Though he was introduced in 2011's Thor, was mostly mind-controlled in 2012's The Avengers, and will appear in next year's Avengers: Age of Ultron, Barton hasn't had the same exposure as some of the other characters. That could change in 2016, however, as actor Jeremy Renner says he might show up in the upcoming Captain America 3.

Speaking with Collider, Renner was asked about this upcoming schedule and revealed he might have to free up some time next year for the third "Cap" film. "There are rumblings of Captain America 3. I don't know what's going to happen there. I've got to find the time, man (laughs). I'm trying to stay home and I can't."

Following this initial story, SuperHeroHype spoke with returning directors Anthony and Joe Russo this afternoon about the potential for Hawkeye's includion, and whether it was something they could talk about.
"Unfortunately we can't (comment)," Anthony said, "It's too specific to what the movie may be." Joe did chime in and teased, "There are certainly characters that Cap is close to or has a strong relationship with that would make sense appearing in his films. I think that's all we can say about it."

This is really great to hear. I really do like the character of Hawkeye and he has been vastly underused. Hopefully he'll have a big role in Cap 3 and help boost his status like Cap 2 did with Scarlett Johansson and Black Widow.

Director Ridley Scott is as busy as ever with his next effort Exodus: Gods and Kings hitting theaters on December 14 of this year and his next film The Martian, starring Matt Damon, set for release on November 25, 2015. Beyond that, he's got two highly-anticipated sequels in the pipeline: Blade Runner 2 and Prometheus 2. Speaking with EW, the director opened up about both films, revealing that the script for the Blade Runner sequel has been completed and which he might tackle first. "It's written and it's damn good," Scott says of the Blade Runner sequel. "Of course it involves Harrison, who is a survivor after all these years - despite the accident (referring to Ford's "Star Wars" injury). So yes, that will happen."

Scott went on to reveal that he could direct the Blade Runner sequel after The Martian, though that leaves very little time for Prometheus 2, currently set for release on March 4, 2016. "That’s the problem, I've got a lot of ducks in a row. But they're all written."

This is awesome to hear. Now we have to take it with a grain of salt simply because it's all talk and no action. Until we see the film go under production then as of now it's not happening. I really do hope Blade Runner 2 gets made simply because I love Blade Runner and I've been dying for a sequel for a really long time.

Following yesterday's unfortunate announcement of the passing of Lord Richard Attenborough, Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow has taken to Twitter to celebrate the actor with the below image of a statue dedicated to Attenborough's John Hammond, presumably from the set of the new film.

        "In memoriam," Trevorrow writes.

Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on June 12, 2015, Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D'Onofrio, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Judy Greer, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus and Andy Buckley. Jurassic World is a sci-fi terror adventure set 22 years after the horrific events of the original Jurassic Park.

This is a really great gesture. The character of John Hammond is iconic and Richard Attenborough did and amazing in the role. Hopefully this statue is in the new film simply to pay tribute to John Hammond for creating Jurassic Park.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Smashed, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) has taken a leading role opposite John Goodman in director Dan Trachtenberg's upcoming microbudget thriller, The Cellar (formerly Valencia), Variety reports. The Cellar was originally scripted by Josh Campbell and Matt Steucken with Dan Casey having recently provided a rewrite. It follows a girl who, after losing consciousness in a car accident, wakes up in an underground cellar with a man who tells her that the outside world has perished in a nuclear attack.

Trachtenberg, best known for his short fan film Portal: No Escape, was also named last year as the director of New Line's planned adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra's acclaimed comic book series Y: The Last Man. That project has not, as of yet, shown any quantifiable progress with Vaughn having recently suggested that there's a very good chance the rights will ultimately revert back to him and Guerra.

This is pretty good casting. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an underrated actress in my opinion and this film could show her chops. It'll also be great to see her star opposite John Goodman.
