In honor of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug being released this weekend, I figured that I would review the first installment in The Hobbit Trilogy entitled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. So without further ado...
Bilbo Baggins (played by Martin Freeman) lives a simple life with his fellow hobbits in the shire, until the wizard Gandalf (played by Sir Ian McKellen) arrives and convinces him to join a group of dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (played by Richard Armitage) on a quest to reclaim the kingdom of Erebor. The journey takes Bilbo on a path through treacherous lands swarming with orcs, goblins and other dangers, not least of which is an encounter with the creepy creature known as Gollum (played by Andy Serkis) and a simple gold ring that is tied to the fate of Middle Earth in ways Bilbo cannot even fathom.
I really enjoyed this film. The visual effects of the film were just magnificent. Peter Jackson's storytelling (with the help of the book) is absolutely wonderful and the performances of Andy Serkis and Sir Ian McKellen are just absolutely brilliant. The main problem with the film for me is that the story took way to long to develop with taking nearly 48 minutes for the film's "journey" to begin and the pacing of the film was very unbalanced and it felt like it dragged on just a little bit to long. Overall I give the film an 8 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments below and let your voice be heard.
