With the year winding down, I figured it was time to give your my favorite movies from each month of the year 2013. So without further ado...
January- The Last Stand
After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (played by Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by Icy Burrell (played by Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez's path: straight through Sommerton Junction , where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister (played by Forest Whitaker) will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever.
February- Warm Bodies
After a zombie epidemic, R (played by Nicholas Hoult) encounter Julie (played by Teresa Palmer), and rescues her from a zombie attack. Julie sees that R is different from the other zombies, and as the two form a special relationship in their struggle for survival, R becomes increasingly more human, setting off an exciting, romantic, and often comical chain of events that begins to transform the other zombies and maybe even the whole lifeless world.
March- The Place Beyond The Pines
Luke (played by Ryan Gosling) is in constant motion, a high-wire motorcycle stunt performer who travels from town to town with the carnival. Passing through Schenectady in upstate New York, he tries to reconnect with former lover, Romina (played by Eva Mendes), only to learn that she has in his absence given birth to their son Jason. Luke resolves to forsake life on the road and to provide for his newfound family, taking a job as a car mechanic with Robin (played by Ben Mendelsohn). Robin soon discovers Luke's special talents, and proposes to partner with him in a string of spectacular bank robberies. But it is only a matter of time before Luke will run up against the law, which comes in the form of Avery Cross (played by Bradley Cooper).
April- Pain & Gain
Daniel Lugo (played by Mark Wahlberg) is regular bodybuilder who works at the Sun Gym along with his friend Adrian Doorbal (played by Anthony Mackie). Sick of living the poor life, Lugo concocts a plan to kidnap Victor Kershaw (played by Tony Shalloub), a regular at the gym and a rich, spoiled businessman, and extort money from him by means of torture. With the help of recently released criminal Paul Doyle (played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), the Sun Gym Gang" successfully gets Kershaw to sign over all his finances. But when Kershaw survives an attempted murder by the gang, he hires a private investigator Ed Du Bois (played by Ed Harris) to catch the criminals after the Miami Police Department fails to do so.
May- Iron Man 3
When Tony Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
June- Monster's University
Long before they were lurking closets for a living, Mike (played by Billy Crystal) and Sulley (played by John Goodman) were just two Scaring majors at Monster's University, dreaming of the day they would make children shriek in terror. When their heated competition to be the most fearsome in their class gets out hand however, Mike and Sulley find themselves ejected from the prestigious Scare Program, and they are forced to seek the aid of their oddball friends in order to get their education back on track.
July- Pacific Rim
Pacific Rim tells the story of giant monsters known as "Kaiju" that have risen from a portal in a crevasse beneath the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a war which takes the lives of millions and quickly consumes humanity's resources. To combat the monsters, a special type of weapon is designed: massive robots, known as Jaegers (which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge). But as the war continues, even the Jaegers struggle to win the war against a relentless enemy. Against all odds, the remaining forces of mankind are forced to make one final stand.
August- Kick-Ass 2
Inspired by Kick-Ass (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson), other masked heroes appear. One such, Colonel Stars and Stripes (played by Jim Carrey), forms a team and Kick-Ass joins them on patrol, while Hit-Girl (played by Chloe Grace Moretz) "retires", and tries to have a normal life. Meanwhile Red Mist (played by Christopher Mintz Plasse) "reborn as The Mother F***er" returns to play supervillian with his army and seeks to exact revenge on Kick-Ass for his father's death.
September- Prisoners
Prisoners tells the story of the Dover and Birch families who get together one thanksgiving for dinner. After the eating has stopped each of the families little girls who are around the same age decide to go outside and play only to be abducted minutes later. Keller Dover (played by Hugh Jackman) and Franklin Birch (played by Terrance Howard) decide to go looking for the girls with no luck in finding them. Detective Loki (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) is brought on to lead the search for the two girls.A suspect soon appears and is brought into custody in the form of Alex Jones (played by Paul Dano) who has the IQ of a 10 year old. After finding no evidence against Alex, Keller decides to take matters into his own hands by kidnapping Alex and torturing him into telling him where the girls are.
October- Gravity
The film stars Sandra Bullock as Bio-medical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone who is a mission specialist on her first space shuttle mission, STS-157, who is accompanied by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (played by George Clooney), who is commanding his final expedition.
November- Thor: The Dark World
Set one year after The Avengers, Thor battles to save the Nine Realms from a mysterious enemy older than the universe itself. A primeval race known as The Dark Elves who are led by Malekith (played by Christopher Eccleston), who is out for revenge, intends to plunge the universe into darkness. Confronted by an enemy that even Odin (played by Anthony Hopkins) and Asgard cannot overcome, Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) must reunite with Jane Foster (played by Natalie Portman) and set out on a dangerous journey that will force him to make the ultimate sacrifice.
December- The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Having survived the first part of their unexpected journey (no pun intended), Bilbo Baggins (played by Martin Freeman), Gandalf the Gray (played by Sir Ian McKellen) and the 13 dwarves Erebor led by Thorin Oakenshield (played by Richard Armitage) continue east towards the Lonely mountain. More dangers await them, including the skin-changer Beorn and the giant spiders of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood Elves, Bilbo and the dwarves journey to Lake-town and finally, to the Lonely Mountain, where they face the greatest danger of all: the fearsome dragon Smaug (played by Benedict Cumberbatch)
