Weekend Movie News 8-21-15 to 8-23-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Nintendo and Universal Studios were partnering up to bring the world of Nintendo to life at Universal theme parks, a peculiar step for the company that does not often license out their characters, but this showed that perhaps the Koopa Troopa was preparing to stick its head out of its shell. Ever since the disastrous Super Mario Bros. movie in 1993, feature films have not been in the cards for Nintendo’s characters, but that might be about to change. “We’ve had, over the years, a number of people who have come to us and said ‘Why don’t we make a movie together—or we make a movie and you make a game and we’ll release them at the same time?’,” Miyamoto tells Fortune. “Because games and movies seem like similar mediums, people’s natural expectation is we want to take our games and turn them into movies… I’ve always felt video games, being an interactive medium, and movies, being a passive medium, mean the two are quite different….As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company, we’re starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that—and we’ll potentially be looking at things like movies in the future.” Previously there were reports of a live-action “Legend of Zelda” Netflix series in the works, but Nintendo has since denied this. Some Nintendo characters have appeared on the big screen in recent days with Bowser making a cameo in Wreck-It Ralph, plus Donkey Kong, Mario, and the Duck Hunt dog appearing in this year’s Pixels, but none have starred in their own feature just yet.

This is great news to hear. I completely understand why Nintendo has been hesitant to make a film based on one of their characters after what Super Mario Bros. did to ruin the character and almost ruin the company itself. Being a video game fan, there are a lot of great and interesting characters at Nintendo and they would all make for interesting movies. I think one of the films could be a Legend of Zelda film and make it like The Lord of the Rings films and you could make a Metroid film and it could be a really cool sci-fi action film. I hope that they do make some films and try to take a better approach and get experienced writers and directors to make the films.

Marvel co-president Louis D’Esposito revealed yesterday that production has officially wrapped on the highly-anticipated Captain America: Civil War. The film spent much of its time in Pinewood Atlanta with additional photography having taken place in Berlin, Germany and Puerto Rico. Set for release in the United States on May 6, 2016, Captain America: Civil War is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. It is set to feature the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, this time joined in his “solo” film by fellow Avengers Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes/War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Sebastian Stan will also be back as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier alongside Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, and Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man. The film is also supposed to debut Marvel’s new Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland. Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

This is great news to hear for a few reasons. One reason is that it 100% percent confirms the movie is happening and I know that isn't a surprise, but a lot of things can go wrong in a production and some films never see the light of day. Another reason is that it means we may get our first trailer for the film very soon and it may be the one they showed at D23. While this is one of my most anticipated films for 2016, I'm still concerned becasue there are a lot of characters in the film and it almost doesn't feel like a Captain America film and it feels like an Avengers film. I'm really excited for what it brings I just hope the film doesn't get too crowded.

Following a massive opening weekend for their Straight Outta Compton, father and son Ice Cube and O’Shea Jackson Jr. are, according to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter, looking to reteam for an action thriller set against the backdrop of the LA Riots. Titled April 29, 1992, the film will be directed by Donovan Marsh, the South African helmer best known for the recent iNumber Number (retitled Avenged in its domestic release). Scripted by “Power” scribe and producer Sascha Penn, April 29, 1992 would star Cube as a former criminal who, during the LA Riots, has to protect both his son and his workplace from a violent group who aim to steal an immense quantity of platinum. The trade stresses that the involvement of Cube and his son are tentative for the time being. Jackson made his big screen debut with Straight Outta Compton, playing a younger version of his father. The N.W.A biopic, directed by F. Gary Gray, has already surpassed $80 million domestically. Cube has two big screen sequels on the way in the not too distant future. He’ll reprise his Ride Along role as Detective James Payton opposite Kevin Hart’s Ben Barber when Ride Along 2 hits the big screen January 15, 2016. Two months after that, he’ll return as Calvin Palmer in Barbershop 3. Directed by Malcolm D. Lee, the latest entry in the comedy franchise also stars Queen Latifah, Cedric the Entertainer, Nicki Minaj, Lamorne Morris, Eve , Anthony Anderson and Regina Hall. Better Luck Tomorrow and four-time Fast and Furious director Justin Lin has also been trying to bring a story about the LA riots to the big screen, working with Academy Award winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) on a screenplay. At the moment, however, Lin is fully immersed in the final frontier, directing next summer’s now-in-production Star Trek Beyond. Will Packer is producing April 29, 1992 with plans to be begin production next February.

This is a really interesting idea. Having been right in the thick of things during that time period, Ice Cube is very passionate about this and you can even see that in Straight Outta Compton. I thought O'Shea Jackson did a tremendous job portraying his father in Straight Outta Compton and he proved that he has some pretty decent acting chops. The premise of the film however sounds pretty stupid and I kind of wish that they would base the film on the Rodney King trial itself or possibly a family living in LA when the riots occurred. I also think F. Gary Gray is a great choice for this film simply because he is good friends with Ice Cub and they have collaborated quite a few times so it make sense to me.

According to Variety English actor Will Poulter (We’re the Millers, The Maze Runner) has been cast opposite Brad Pitt in War Machine, a provocative, satirical comedy from writer-director David Michôd (The Rover, Animal Kingdom) for Plan B Entertainment and Netflix. War Machine concerns a four star, “rock star” general (Pitt) whose lethal reputation and impeccable track record vaults him to command the American war in Afghanistan. Principal photography is scheduled to start later this month, with Topher Grace, Scoot McNairy, Emory Cohen, John Magaro and Anthony Michael Hall also lined up to co-star. Inspired by the best-selling book “The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan” by the late Michael Hastings, War Machine is produced by Netflix and Pitt alongside his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, and producer Ian Bryce (World War Z, Saving Private Ryan). Netflix plans to open the film in theaters next year in addition to making it available for their streaming subscribers. Poulter’s casting in this may mean it is now even less likely he will play Pennywise in New Line’s adaptation of Stephen King’s IT, for which he was cast before director Cary Fukunaga was replaced by Andy Muschietti. Regardless, he will next be seen opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy in this winter’s big Oscar contender The Revenant.

This is a great casting decision. While he hasn't been in a lot of big films, Poulter has proven himself to be quite the talented actor and this is a big step forward for him. I'm curious to see how he'll do opposite Brad Pitt, but we'll sort of get an idea how he'll do against some other A-List actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy in the The Revenant later this year. This film sounds really neat and I'm really anxious to see Brad Pitt in a starring role in a film and actually have a substantial role unlike the one he had in 12 Years a Slave and as I said maybe Will Poulter will be able to upstage Pitt and give a better performance.

In the planning stages for more than a decade, four-time Academy Award nominated director Michael Mann’s Enzo Ferrari biopic appears to finally be moving forward. Deadline today brings word that the film, simply titled Ferrari, has found its leading man in Academy Award winner Christian Bale. According to the outlet, Ferrari is now looking for buyers with the plan being to shoot next summer. Enzo Ferrari’s bio on the official Ferrari website is listed as follows:  Enzo Ferrari was born in Modena on February 18th 1898 and died on August 14th 1988. He devoted his entire life to designing and building sports cars and, of course, to the track. Having been made an official Alfa Romeo driver in 1924, within five years he had gone on to found the Scuderia Ferrari on Viale Trento Trieste in Modena which assisted mostly gentlemen drivers in racing their cars. In 1938, Enzo Ferrari was appointed head of Alfa Corse but quit the position in 1939 to set up his own company, Auto Avio Costruzioni, which operated out of the old Scuderia buildings. Ferrari has garnered over 5,000 victories on the world’s tracks and roads, becoming a modern-day legend in the process. In order to meet growing market demand, Enzo Ferrari sold the Fiat Group a 50% stake in the company in 1969, a figure that rose to 90% in 1988. Bale, who recently starred in Ridley Scott’s Biblical epic, Exodus: Gods and Kings, previously worked with Mann on 2009’s Public Enemies. Mann followed that film up with his recent Blackhat, starring Chris Hemsworth, which was released in theaters earlier this year.

This is another great casting decision. Christian Bale is an Academy Award winning actor and he'll pretty much do good in just about any film you put him in. I also think it's a great choice because he looks a little like Enzo Ferrari and I think he would be able to pull it off well. My one concern in Michael Mann who isn't the greatest director in the world and I don't know how he'll do with this material. It sounds like a great idea, I just hope Mann can up with something great.
