8-10-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Planned for some time for Leonardo Dicaprio to headline, the big screen adaptation of Erik Larson’s best selling true crime tale The Devil in the White City appears to finally be moving forward. Deadline today reports that Paramount Pictures has picked up the rights to the novel with the plan being for a big screen adaptation to become the sixth teaming between leading man DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese. Academy Award nominee Billy Ray (Captain Phillips, The Hunger Games) will provide the adapted screenplay. Published in 2003, The Devil in the White City is officially described by Crown Publishing as follows: Their fates were linked by the magical Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, nicknamed the “White City” for its majestic beauty. Architect Daniel Burnham built it; serial killer Dr. H. H. Holmes used it to lure victims to his World’s Fair Hotel, designed for murder. Both men left behind them a powerful legacy, one of brilliance and energy, the other of sorrow and darkness. Here, then, is your ticket to the greatest fair in history—a place where incredible dreams came to life alongside darkest nightmares. DiCaprio will take on the part of the homicidal Mr. Holmes. “I think that a guy who is that intelligent and that charismatic is nothing less than complex, and it’s that complexity that (DiCaprio) is drawn to,” said DiCaprio’s producing partner Jennifer Killoran of the project a few years back. “And because people don’t know much about him, it makes it even more interesting.” Scorsese and DiCaprio first teamed on Gangs of New York in 2002, followed by The Aviator in 2004, The Departed in 2006, Shutter Island in 2010 and The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013. DiCaprio next headlines Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revanant, set for release December 25. Scorsese’s latest, Silence, is, meanwhile, still without a release date. Also hailing from Paramount, it stars Andrew Garfield, Ken Watanabe and Liam Neeson.

This is an amazing idea. Scorsese and DiCaprio haven't made a bad movie yet and when you put these two together then you can expect a pretty darn good film. The story of this film has a great sound to it and it is a story that I am very interested in. H.H. Holmes is a figure in history that not a lot of people really talk about and to finally get a film based somewhat around him. DiCaprio is the perfect choice to play the part especially after you've seen how dark in can get when he's in certain roles whether it be the last hour of The Aviator, the last hour of Shutter Island and his entire role in Django Unchained, this guy can do it all. I've been saying for a long time that DiCaprio is winning an Oscar for his film The Revenant which comes out later this year, but if this film turns out to be great and DiCaprio gives a great performance, then he could very well walk away with a second Oscar.

Following his tragic death before the film’s release, it was widely circulated that in preparation for the role of The Joker in The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger locked himself in a room for some time and scribbled notes into a journal. Now, a sequence from an upcoming documentary about the late actor (via EW) has surfaced online, featuring the very journal that Ledger used to get into the character of the clown prince of crime. “He pretty well locked himself up in a hotel, in his apartment, for a month or so, to sort of galvanize the upcoming character in his own mind,” Kim Ledger, Heath’s father, says in the clip. “That was typical of Heath on any movie. He would certainly immerse himself in the upcoming character. I think this was just a whole new level.” The contents of the journal feature images of the character from comics, playing cards, Hyenas, and a photo of Alex DeLarge from A Clockwork Orange. There’s also a few pages of his dialogue from the film when he meets Harvey Dent at Gotham General Hospital. You can check out the clip in the player below. Ledger was posthumously awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor the year after The Dark Knight was released. He co-starred in the film with Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart Aaron, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman.

Eventhough it was short, this little segment was kind of spooky. What makes it so spooky is seeing how much time and effort Heath Ledger put into making this character into what it ultimately became, which is what many consider one of the greatest performances on screen in film history. Ledger was a very talented actor that was taken away too soon and he had many more Oscar worthy performances left in him, but to get to see this inside look at who he was and how he prepared for the role that cinema for forever is interesting and I'm really looking forward to it.

Kurt Russell’s lawman John Ruth and Jennifer Jason Leigh’s fugitive Daisy Domergue grace the new The Hateful Eight poster (via Entertainment Weekly). The film is the latest from Academy Award-winning writer/director Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained, Inglorious Basterds, Pulp Fiction) and you can check it out below. TWC will release The Hateful Eight in select theaters on December 25, 2015 with an exclusive two-week roadshow opening in 70mm. Following the two-week engagement, the film will open with a digital theatrical release nationwide on January 8, 2016, while continuing to be shown in 70mm as well. The lead cast for The Hateful Eight includes Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demian Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern. Written and directed by Tarantino, The Hateful Eight is produced by Richard N. Gladstein, Stacey Sher and Shannon McIntosh. Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and Georgia Kacandes are executive producing, and Coco Francini and William Paul Clark are associate producing. Spaghetti-western legend Ennio Morricone (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) is expected to provide an original score. In The Hateful Eight, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all… . The Hateful Eight marks a continuation of the long-standing relationship between the celebrated filmmaker and the Weinsteins, who have collaborated on all of Tarantino’s films from Reservoir Dogs through Django Unchained.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT

This is a really great poster. It doesn't really show much, but it does really capture the essence of the film itself. As a lot of you know I am a die hard Quinton Tarantino fan and I love every single one of his films and they all hold a special place for me. This film sounds just absolutely amazing and eventhough Tarantino doesn't shoot for Oscars, this film will receive a lot of attention at next year's Oscars. I'm kind of sad that I probably won't get to see the film until January, but I am really looking forward to it.

When Channing Tatum parodied his heartthrob bro image in 21 Jump Street, it showed off his comedic versatility and increased his star profile. Now it looks like Zac Efron (Neighbors, That Awkward Moment) has found his own nostalgic meta TV show adaptation in Paramount Pictures’ Baywatch movie, which The Hollywood Reporter confirms he will co-star in alongside the previously-announced Dwayne Johnson. Based on what was, throughout the ’90s, one of the most-watched TV shows in the world, the long-gestating Baywatch movie will be helmed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief) and star Johnson as a by-the-book lifeguard and Efron as a young hotshot lifeguard on patrol along the sexy, sunny beaches of Los Angeles County, California. Together they will save their beach from an oil tycoon’s planned environmental destruction, and much slow-motion running will ensue. Although several writers have been attached to Baywatch, the most recent draft hails from the Friday the 13th pair of Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Earlier reports suggested that the film will offer a comedy-heavy take that has little to do with the original series. Parts were reportedly written, however, for both Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff to reprise their roles. Whether or not that remains the plan is, at the moment, unconfirmed. As always, check back for updates as they become available. After the success of Neighbors, Efron is on a bit of a comedy tear, with Dirty Grandpa (opposite Robert De Niro), Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates (opposite Anna Kendrick) and Neighbors 2 (reuniting him with Seth Rogen) all on the horizon for 2016.

This is really great casting. Zac Efron has really proven himself to be viable and credible actor and putting him in any film is a great idea. Now I will that eventhough that I am heterosexual male, I can't deny that Zac Efron is a good-looking dude and that the ladies absolutely love him. He's going to be in a film where his shirt will be off so expect a great turnout from the female population. As for him being alongside The Rock also makes this a great choice simply because they have both proven that they have great comedic timing and I think they will work very well together.

Cold, a supernatural thriller in development at Lionsgate, has today found both a star and a producer in Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line, Wild). The Hollywood Reporter has the news, bringing word that the Academy Award winner will headline and produce alongside Bruna Papandrea, Witherspoon’s producing partner at Pacific Standard Films. While the plot is being kept secret for the time being, the screenplay for Cold hails from Deja Vu scribe Bill Marsilii. Marsilii has also served as a writer on Cartoon Network’s “Courage the Cowardly Dog” and drafted Walt Disney Pictures’ still-unproduced 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo. Earlier this year, Witherspoon starred in the action comedy Hot Pursuit opposite Sofia Vergara (Chef, “Modern Family”). She also recently signed on to produce and star in Tink, a live action film from Walt Disney Pictures that follows Tinker Bell, the mischievous fairy from J.M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan”. News of Witherspoon’s involvement with Cold comes on the heels of word earlier this year that Witherspoon and Papandrea will produce another Lionsgate thriller, Luckiest Girl Alive, based Jessica Knoll’s recent best seller.

This is a really great casting choice. Reese Witherspoon is an Academy Award winning actress and she has been really good in every film (except for the disaster known as Hot Pursuit) since that moment and this is a no-brainer decision when casting a female lead. Not much about the film has been released as of yet so I don't have a clue what is going to happen. All I can talk about is that the studio seems to have all of their ducks in a row and on pressing one full speed ahead with the film.
