Weekend Movie News 8-14-15 to 8-16-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

The Lucasfilm/Star Wars portion of the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California has ended and Disney Chairman Alan Horn kicked things off by announcing and confirming that Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow will direct Star Wars: Episode IX! The movie is currently set for an undisclosed 2019 date with production not beginning for a few years, although Trevorrow will begin production with Lucasfilm soon. The official press release has a statement from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy: “Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw Safety Not Guaranteed. The power of that film paired with the enormous success of Jurassic World speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe.” As well as one from Trevorrow himself: “This is not a job or an assignment. It is a seat at a campfire, surrounded by an extraordinary group of storytellers, filmmakers, artists and craftspeople. We’ve been charged with telling new stories for a younger generation because they deserve what we all had—a mythology to call their own. We will do this by channeling something George Lucas instilled in all of us: boundless creativity, pure invention and hope.” Written by Simon Kinberg, Lawrence Kasdan, Rian Johnson and Michael Arndt, Star Wars: Episode IX will conclude the third trilogy of Star Wars movies that begins with Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18, 2015.

I think this is a really solid choice. Now eventhough it is a solid choice, it wouldn't have been my first choice. I think that the only reason why Trevorrow was brought only was not only because Safety Not Guaranteed is a great film, but that Jurassic World is currently the third highest grossing film of all-time. One of the complaints about Trevorrow is his writing capabilities and this has become a concern for some simply because the writing for Jurassic World wasn't the greatest and he was one of the writers, but my counter to that is that he had three other people working on the script besides him. I think that with people like Rian Johnson and Simon Kinberg writing the film for him, this film will have the ultimate job of closing up a trilogy that had the foundation laid by JJ Abrams and was built upon by Rian Johnson. As I said before this wasn't my top choice, but I still do like the decision.

Straight from Disney’s D23 Expo comes the moment fans across the galaxy have been waiting for, an official Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster by artist Drew Struzan! Having provided legendary posters for all six films in the franchise, there was previously doubt about Struzan returning for the seventh film in the series, but you can check out his latest work (an exclusive to the convention) below.  Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, and features a new generation of swashbuckling heroes and shadowy villains, as well as the return of fan-favorite smugglers, princesses, and Jedi. Starring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong and Miltos Yerolemou, the J.J. Abrams-directed film will debut in theaters on December 18, 2015. It will be followed on December 16, 2016 by Rogue One, Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26, 2017, and the Han Solo anthology movie on May 25, 2018. No release dates have been announced for Star Wars: Episode IX and the third anthology movie.

This is a fantastic and wonderful poster. If you want a realistic poster that really captures the essence of the film, then you need to get Drew Struzan. If you get the chance then check out his documentary on Netflix entitled "Drew: The Man Behind the Poster" and you'll get a chance to see all of the amazing posters he has created over the years and I highly reccomend it. He is the ultimate master when it comes to posters and since he did create the prequels trilogy posters and the special edition poster for the original trilogy, it is no surprise he has worked on this one. The poster also reveals that Finn (played by John Boyega) will indeed be a Jedi in the film which is something that has been speculated on for a long time. This is only the teaser poster, but if it looks this good, then I can't wait to see the rel poster.

At the D23 expo (via CNBC) Disney Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter has finally confirmed the plot for Pixar’s much-anticipated Toy Story 4, which he will return to direct alongside Josh Cooley, and it has set our hearts all aflutter.  “It’s a love story with Woody and—and this is news—Bo Peep,” said Lasseter. “At Pixar and at Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that’s as good or better than the original. That’s our rule. We don’t do things just to print money.” Bo Peep (and her sheep) was introduced as Woody’s love interest in the original 1995 Toy Story, as voiced by Annie Potts (Ghostbusters). She was conspicuously absent from Toy Story 3, only briefly glimpsed in Andy’s home movies after apparently having been sold. Whether they plan to bring her back into the fold somehow or if the story is a prequel remains to be seen. The script for Toy Story 4 will be provided by actors-turned-screenwriters Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who previously penned and starred in Celeste and Jesse Forever. They’re working from a story idea by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, and Lee Unkrich. Pixar’s Galyn Susman will produce. Although officially unconfirmed at this time, it’s just about a certainty that Toy Story 4 will feature the return of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack and the rest of the hit franchise’s diverse voice talent. It will be released in theaters on June 16, 2017.

This is really interesting news to hear. Now let me start off by saying that while Toy Story 3 was a massive financial and critical success, I do not stand by the fact that they are making another film in a trilogy that already has a nice bow placed on the wonderfully wrapped package. However since this is happening I do have to discuss it. I think this is a neat story to tell and as the article points out I don't know if this will be a prequel or direct sequel simply becasue of Bo Peep who wasn't in Toy Story 3 and it kind of leans towards a prequel film which will just make me mad because if you are going to make another Toy Story film then at least continue the story by moving forward. I honestly hop the film isn't a prequel, but no matter what I'll still be there on opening night.

Last month, it was revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy (and previous Star Trek Into Darkness hopeful) Benicio Del Toro was in negotiations to play the villain in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. Now, speaking with Entertainment Tonight, the actor confirms that he’s in talks and is confident that he’ll appear in the film. “I can’t tell you much about it but I think that it might happen. It looks like it’s gonna happen, so I’m very excited,” he said. “I can’t talk too much about it. The script is hard to get. They told me they’d cut my finger if I talk about it… I saw the original one when it came out and it marked me,” Del Toro, who was 10 when the first Star Wars hit theaters, recounted. “I was impressed by the film and by the characters and by the story and the message.” Very little is known about the eighth “Saga” chapter of the hugely successful sci-fi fantasy franchise other than that Johnson is attached to both write and direct. The film, set for release May 26, 2017, will be produced by Ram Bergman and Kathleen Kennedy and will follow both J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well as the franchise’s first “anthology” film, director Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. Starring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong and Miltos Yerolemou, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will debut in theaters on December 18. After that happens, we’ll have a much better grasp on who among that cast will be returning for Episode VIII.

If this does come to fruition then it is a great choice. Star Wars is built off of getting complete unknowns while adding in a few experience actors and you don't get a more experienced actor than Benicio Del Toro who is absolutely fantastic and an Academy Awards winning actor. I think he would do really well as the villain because that is what he is most known for in his previous films. with the way he is talking, we may see him in Rogue One and helped build the continuity and bridge the gap between Rouge One and star Wars Episode 4 and that will  help the film out.

A year ago, the news broke that Shane Black (Iron Man 3, Lethal Weapon) had targeted a reworking/”inventive sequel” to 20th Century Fox’s Predator. So what progress has been made in the year since? According to Collider‘s recent interview with producer John Davis, writer/director (not to mention co-star of John McTiernan’s original) Black is still fully engaged to making the Predator sequel, despite having filmed the 1970’s-set noir The Nice Guys with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe and the Amazon spaghetti western pilot “Edge” in the interim. “Shane shot a movie and he’s doing a pilot now, but I’ve read a lot of his script and I think it’s genius,” Davis said. “I think it’s genius and I think it’s entertaining, and what it did is recreate a famous franchise in a different, interesting way; looking at it from a different light. He’s just an amazing writer-director. He’s got a way of looking at this that makes you excited again. I love this franchise. It was the first movie I ever did. I remember in being in the jungle with Arnold [Schwarzenegger] as a 28-year-old and going, ‘This is a fun business!’…Shane’s amazing. He’s an amazing storyteller.” Black will be directing the new film and is writing the treatment that will tie in to franchise continuity, with the full script being supplied by his longtime pal Fred Dekker, with whom Black worked on Monster Squad. “Shane’s got a writing partner, Fred Dekker,” Davis continued. “They’ve been doing it together and Fred’s great. The two of them together, they’ve been in the business for a long time, but the writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’ I mean he’s the guy who wrote ‘Iron Man 3.'” The 1987 original was directed by John McTiernan and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of a United States special forces team that comes under attack from an alien entity that prizes the thrill of the hunt above all else. It was followed by a direct sequel, Predator 2, in 1990 before crossing over with Fox’s Alien franchise for two additional sequels, Alien vs. Predator and AvP: Requiem. In 2010, Nimrod Antal helmed a reboot with a new feature, Predators. John Davis (The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Chronicle) is attached to produce the new Predator sequel with Matt Reilly overseeing for Fox and Ira Napoliello overseeing for Davis Entertainment.

This is a pretty interesting choice. I say that because it has taken a whole year for Shane Black to come up with just the right script when it usually doesn't take a few months. This tells me the studio either A. Can't find a good story to agree on or B. they don' know if the script they have moving forward with is going to help the film. I'm a small fan of the Predator franchise and I hope they can come up with a script that is good enough.
