8-3-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Despite a report late last month saying that Channing Tatum’s deal for the Gambit movie was in jeopardy of falling apart and that he was planning to exit the X-Men spin-off at 20th Century Fox, The Hollywood Reporter says that the deal has now closed for the actor to star and produce. According to the trade, the negotiations did hit a sensitive spot, but there was never any real danger of it not moving forward. His commitment to the role could possibly last more than a decade, much like how Hugh Jackman has appeared in many X-Men and solo films as Wolverine. Rise of the Planet of the Apes helmer Rupert Wyatt will direct Gambit. Josh Zemuter wrote the script, based on a treatment by Chris Claremont. Tatum, Reid Carolin, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are producing. The film is planned to go before cameras in October for an October 7, 2016 release. The movie will follow X-Men spinoff Deadpool on February 15, 2016 and X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016.

This is great news to hear. After the big rumor that was circulating around the web over the weekend, we can all take a deep breath and relax. Channing Tatum is perfect for the role of Gambit and to now know that he is officially on board gets me excited for the film. Gambit is one of my favorite characters and after the way that the filmmakers on X-Men Origins: Wolverine misused him, it's about time the character got another chance. I just wish that Fox would've give Taylor Kitsch another chance like they did with Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.

Back in 2013, it was announced that Warner Bros. was developing a live-action adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons, which was quickly squashed by Hasbro just a week later. Now, the legal dispute between the two has been settled and Warner Bros. Pictures, Hasbro’s Allspark Pictures and Sweetpea Entertainment have announced they are moving forward on the feature film. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis, Courtney Solomon and Allan Zeman of Sweetpea Entertainment, and Roy Lee (The LEGO Movie, How to Train Your Dragon) are attached as producers of the film, which features a script by David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2, Wrath of the Titans). “We are so excited about bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the big screen,” said Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. “This is far and away the most well-known brand in fantasy, which is the genre that drives the most passionate film followings. D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property.” “This is such an enormous opportunity to bring the rich fantasy setting of the Forgotten Realms to life and, together with the creative powerhouse of Warner Bros., use movies to tell the stories that have enchanted passionate D&D fans for decades,” said Stephen Davis, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer of Hasbro, Inc. “D&D is the role-playing game that started it all and now we have the opportunity to ignite a franchise for its legions of avid fans in a way never done before.”

Dungeons & Dragons first became popular in 1974, and since then has amassed millions of players and fans worldwide. The hugely popular property has also influenced numerous writers, directors, game designers, and other creative professionals throughout its four decades. “We are thrilled that this beloved property can finally make its way to the big screen after 20 years, and that it can be realized by Warner Bros., which has been responsible for the biggest fantasy franchises over the past two decades,” said Courtney Solomon of Sweetpea Entertainment. First adapted for the small screen as an animated television series in 1983, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson’s iconic role playing was turned into a feature film in 2000 with a live-action version directed by Courtney Solomon. The film was neither a critical nor financial success, but it did lead to a telefilm sequel with 2005’s Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God and a direct-to-DVD followup with Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness in 2012.

This is pretty great news to hear. Now let me say that I'm not the biggest Dungeons & Dragons fan nor have I ever played the game so I'll be going into this blind as a bat. I honestly don't know how this film will do since the popularity of the game has died down quite a bit and the fact the previous film version was absolutely terrible. If the film is marketed right and the studio assembles a good cast and crew then it has a really good chance to be very successful.

Very few updates for the planned Prometheus 2 have been revealed since development was announced last year. A release date was set for March 4, 2016, which was already an impossibility for the follow-up, but now Total Film (via SciFied) has revealed in an article on Ridley Scott’s The Martian that the 77-year-old director is set to begin filming the sequel in January of 2016. One thing that won’t be present for the sequel are the fan-favorite Xenomorphs from the original Alien franchise. “The beast is done,” Scott previously said about the monster. “Cooked. I got lucky meeting Giger all those years ago. It’s very hard to repeat that. I just happen to be the one who forced it through because they said it’s obscene. They didn’t want to do it and I said, ‘I want to do it, it’s fantastic.’ But after four, I think it wears out a little bit. There’s only so much snarling you can do. I think you’ve got to come back with something more interesting. And I think we’ve found the next step. I thought the Engineers were quite a good start.” Written by Michael Green and Jack Paglen, Prometheus 2 will feature the return of Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace. The original film also starred Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron. It grossed over $400 million at the global box office, making it the highest grossing entry in the “Alien” franchise.

This is really surprising news to hear. I say that because the film has been rumored for a really long time and a lot of people thought that it would never get made. I'm hesitant about Prometheus 2 for 2 reasons. One reason is that I really didn't like the film that much and the other reason is because of Ridley Scott who hasn't had the best track record as of late. He does have The Martian coming out later this year and that could either prove he still has what it takes to direct films or he will be considered done as a director. I hope he can improve on the storytelling of the last film to make this film better.

Variety reports that Frank Grillo is in final negotiations to return for The Purge 3, the next installment of the Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions franchise coming to theaters on July 1, 2016. Grillo starred in the second film, The Purge: Anarchy, which earned $110.6 million on a budget of just $9 million last year. “Anarchy” also starred Michael K. Williams, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez and Keith Stanfield. “The Purge” series creator James DeMonaco is again writing and directing the new film. Jason Blum is producing with Sebastien Lemercier and Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller through their Platinum Dunes. The trade says that scheduling problems with his DIRECTV show “Kingdom” threatened the possibility of Grillo reprising his role. Those issues have been worked out and Grillo will now be able to shoot The Purge 3 starting in September. Grillo can be seen reprising his role of Crossbones in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. He also has roles in Beyond Skyline and Stephanie.

This is great news to hear. Now for those that haven't seen The Purge: Anarchy, then this is sort of a spoiler for that film so I'm sorry if this spoiled the film for you. Frank Grillo is a really talented actor and putting him in any film is a great idea. I thought he brought a lot to The Purge: Anarchy and he helped elevate the film. The film itself was a way better than its predecessor and hopefully the third film in the franchise can help continue the momentum for future films.

Move over LEGO, Minecraft and Emoji, there’s a new random thing in town that is demanding the big screen treatment! According to Deadline, PEZ Candy Inc. has entered into an agreement with Envision Media Arts to develop a feature animated movie based on their world-famous line of candy dispensers. Cameron Fay (The Three Stooges, Brother in Law) will pen the screenplay for the film, which clearly earmarks it as being a comedy, possibly of the meta/”Hey look how dumb this is!” variety. Lee Nelson (Pathfinder) and David Buelow (Celeste & Jesse Forever) will produce the PEZ movie. “PEZ Candy is beloved by children and adults alike,” EMA CEO and founder Lee Nelson said. “With Cameron Fay we’ve created a world unique to Pez and a story that will touch the hearts of many.” A long-cherished childhood tradition, PEZ is an Austrian company founded in 1927 which added heads (Santa Claus, Mickey Mouse, etc) to their dispensers in order to appeal to children during the 1950s, shortly after the product started marketing in America. Soon hunger for the multi-flavored candy was equalled by a fervor to collect the many pop culture icons embodied in the dispensers, which have included characters from DC and Marvel Comics, Peanuts, Star Wars, Star Trek, Transformers, The Wizard of Oz, NASCAR and the rock band KISS. Over 3-billion PEZ candies are consumed in the U.S. alone each year.

I have heard a lot of stupid movie ideas in my two years as a movie-blogger, but this one may be the stupidest one of them all. Look as a kid I loved PEZ candy and I ate it up like I was on drugs, but how in the world can you make a film about this. I say that after having said the same thing about The Lego Movie so I can't really judge stupid ideas like this one. Honestly I wonder what Hollywood is thinking when they come up with films like this. Hopefully I'm completely wrong and this film becomes a global sensation critically and financially.
