My Review of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

With The SpongBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water being released this weekend I thought it would be fitting to review its predecessor The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. So without further ado...

Film poster showing SpongeBob SquarePants (right) and Patrick Star (left) waving on a car shaped like a sandwich. Below them are various Bikini Bottom residents watching the pair, including Mr. Krabs, Squidward Tentacles, and Sandy Cheeks. In the upper left side of the image is the film title. Below is shown "Hero. Legend. Sponge." above the production details and the theatrical release date.

Something nefarious is afloat in the depths of Bikini Bottom: King Neptune's crown has been stolen, and the prime suspect is Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob's boss at Mr. Krabs' Krabby Patties. Despite the overwhelming evidence against Mr. Krabs -- not to mention having been turned down for a long-awaited promotion at the restaurant -- SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) refuses to believe that his boss is responsible and teams up with his best friend, Patrick (voiced by Bill Fagerbakke), on a mission to Shell City, where he hopes he can exonerate Mr. Krabs and return the crown to its rightful owner. Of course, this is no easy task; once outside the safety of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob is faced with the overwhelming dangers of the sea, not the least of which being a cyclops that many believe to be responsible for the deaths of countless other unfortunate sea-creatures who ventured outside county lines.

This was a great and fun film to watch. Now granted I really enjoyed watching the tv show and to see a full length movie about this amazing universe was pretty spectacular. The filmmakers hit gold by doing this film at the height of the shows popularity. I really loved the voicework in the film and the animation is flawless throughout the entire film. I felt that story was good, but everything that the characters had to go through to get to climax was a little choppy and poorly written and executed. Another thing that bothered me were the jokes and how some of them had really great promise, but they just didn't hit home like they should've. Overall it does great justice for the tv show and it was made at the right time, but the film as a whole is poorly executed and doesn't leave wanting more from these characters. I give The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie a 6 out of 10.
