2-4-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the teaser trailer for the Magic Mike sequel, Magic Mike XXL, which you can check out at your discretion below. Returning stars Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias will be joined by newcomers Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games franchise), Donald Glover (“Community”), Amber Heard (The Rum Diary), Andie MacDowell (Footloose), Jada Pinkett Smith (“Gotham”) and Michael Strahan (“Live with Kelly and Michael”) with Emmy Award winner Gregory Jacobs (Behind the Candelabra), who served as a producer on Magic Mike, directing and producing. Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, Magic Mike XXL finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways. Magic Mike XXL also reunites Magic Mike producers Nick Wechsler, Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin, with a screenplay by Carolin. Soderbergh, who directed the first film, will executive produce. Look for the sequel in theaters Wednesday, July 1, 2015.

I'm just going to go ahead and say that this was a pretty decent trailer. Now granted I am no where near the target audience, but like I said yesterday the film first film wasn't that bad and this one doesn't look bad either. I just honestly wish McConaughey would return for the film, but I think it will still be good without him.

Keanu Reeves’ action-thriller John Wick was one of the bigger surprises of the fall when it opened last October, grossing $43 million domestically and another $35 million overseas, based on a $20 million production budget. Now out on DVD and Blu-ray, Movies.com had a chance to speak with directors and stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and David Leitch who told them that they’re already in development for a sequel to John Wick. “We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original,” Stahelski told them. “It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.” That said, they didn’t go into any details about whether Keanu Reeves would even return for a sequel, but in the meantime, the duo are also in early talks to direct the comic book-based Cowboy Ninja Viking.

I think this is a great idea. John Wick was the most surprising film of the year and it left itself wide open for a sequel. I would honestly love to see a sequel and hopefully Reeves returns,  because I can't see a John Wick sequel film without John Wick himself. This could potentially proves that Keanu Reeves can carry another franchise besides The Matrix.

Universal Pictures announced today that Steve Jobs will be released in theaters on Friday, October 9, 2015. The other films scheduled for that date are The Finest Hours, Kidnap and Vacation. Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, the film aims to take audiences behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter. Steve Jobs is directed by Academy Award winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) and written by Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, “The Newsroom”), working from Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the Apple founder. Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave) will play Jobs, the pioneering founder of Apple, with the Academy Award-winning Kate Winslet (The Reader, Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind) starring as Joanna Hoffman, former marketing chief of Macintosh. Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple, is played by Seth Rogen (Neighbors, The Interview), and Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom,” Good Night and Good Luck) stars as former Apple CEO John Sculley. The film also stars Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice, Being Flynn) as Chrisann Brennan, Jobs’ ex-girlfriend, and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, “Boardwalk Empire”) as Andy Hertzfeld, one of the original members of the Apple Macintosh development team. Other members of the cast include Perla Haney-Jardine (Future Weather), Ripley Sobo (Winter’s Tale) and Makenzie Moss (Do You Believe?) as young Lisa Brennan at various stages of her life, Sarah Snook (Predestination) as Andrea Cunningham, as well as Adam Shapiro (A Single Man) as Avie Tevanian. Producers on Steve Jobs are Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan, Source Code), Guymon Casady (“Game of Thrones,” “Hope Springs”) of Film 360, Scott Rudin and Academy Award winner Christian Colson (Slumdog Millionaire, Selma).

This is a great release date. The film has Oscar bait written all over it and October is the start of the Oscar season. It also provides counter-programming for the people who will see Vacation, The Finest Hours and Kidnap. I love everything about this film and I cannot wait to see it.

Three more have joined the cast of Oliver Stone’s still-untitled Edward Snowden film opposite the previously-attached Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper, 50/50) and Shailene Woodley (Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars). According to a story today at TheWrap, new additions include Academy Award winner Melissa Leo (Prisoners, Flight), two-time nominee Tom Wilkinson (The Lone Ranger, Selma) and Zachary Quinto (Star Trek, Margin Call). Written and directed by three-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone (Platoon, JFK), the script is based on the books “The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man” by Luke Harding and “Time of the Octopus” by Anatoly Kucherena. The latter book mainly deals with former information analyst Snowden’s time in Russia hoping to get asylum while the United States was demanding his extradition to potentially face jail time for leaking classified information. Leo will play filmmaker and journalist Laura Poitras, the director of the documentary Citizenfour, with Quinto and Wilkinson starring as The Guardian reporters Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill, respectively. The film is being produced by Moritz Borman and Eric Kopeloff, with production scheduled to kicking off in Munich.

These are three magnificent additions. Both Leo and Wilkinson are Academy Award nominated actors with the former winning the Best Supporting Actress Award for her work in The Fighter. The one thing I am worried about for this film is Oliver Stone who hasn't had the greatest track record over his past few film and the I Just don't know how he will do with this film. Hopefully I am wrong and this film turns out great.

20th Century Fox and MGM (vis USA Today) have provided us with a first scarifying look at the Poltergeist reboot, produced by genre legend Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead) and directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House) and you can check out the picture below. “Whenever someone approaches material that’s so beloved, there’s a reflexive reaction to be worried,” says Kenan. “It’s a responsibility we take very seriously. We’re working to make a Poltergeist film that lives up to the original’s legacy.” The film boasts an impressive cast, including Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris, Rosemarie DeWitt, Saxon Sharbino, and Jane Adams, along with 8-year-old Kennedi Clements as Madison, a play on the iconic Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) from the original. “Unlike the traditional horror film, I wanted to put together a cast to give weight and reality to these characters. It’s the way to anchor the family,” says Kenan. “It’s such an emotional story at the core. Parents fighting to get their child back from the beyond.” Like Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper’s 1982 classic, this Poltergeist involves a family, the Bowens, that move into a house with bad spiritual juju (some involving television sets), eventually leading them to call upon a respected supernatural researcher and clairvoyant (Harris). “The original film commented on how we’ve let television get out of control, babysitting our kids,” says Raimi. “It’s only gotten worse with the handheld portable devices. Screens are everywhere.” “The thing that keeps them a family is what they have to draw on, to stay sane, and also to win Madison back,” says Kenan. “The film is super-scary. And it’s scary on its own terms. I am excited to finally be able to share that with the world.”

This picture isn't really that creepy. I will admit that the first Poltergeist  didn't really scare me, but it is still a solid horror film and I am kind of looking forward to the remake. My main concern with the film is that it is coming out in an already crowded summer and plus it is also a horror film coming out in the summer which is one of my biggest pet peeves with horror films. I'm looking forward to the film and I hope it can live up to the original film.
