2-18-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

District 9 and Elysium helmer Neill Blomkamp made headlines last month when he posted a series of concept art designs for a new film in the 20th Century Fox’s Alien franchise. Although the filmmaker admitted that the designs were unofficial, he hinted that he’d be more than happy to take on such a project. At this point it’s uncertain precisely what route the new film will take or if Signourney Weaver (whose Ellen Ripley was featured in the concept designs) will be returning to the franchise. “[Sigourney] knows about it,” Blomkamp told ComingSoon.net last week, “and part of it was just inspired by speaking to her on set when we were filming ‘Chappie,’ and getting her thoughts on ‘Alien’ and what she thought of the movies that came after ‘Aliens’ and what she felt about Ripley and what was incomplete for her about Ripley. There was so much fuel in what she was telling me.” Blomkamp’s latest, Chappie, also stars Weaver and lands in theaters March 6!

This is fantastic news. Now granted that Fox hasn't officially confirmed the news, but let's take it for what its worth. I think that Blomkamp is the perfect choice to direct an Alien film. Just look at what he did with District 9 and how he handled the aliens in that film. This guy is a pure sci-fi director and I think his style will work perfectly for the film and I cannot wait to see his take on the franchise when the news is confirmed.

Nightcrawler, the “fuzzy elf” mutant with the ability to teleport, is headed back to the big screen. X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer just revealed (via his Instagram account) that Kodi Smit-McPhee (ParaNorman, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) will play the character in the May 27, 2016 release James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult are set to lead the cast of X-Men: Apocalypse, which will also see the return of Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert and newcomers Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, and Tye Sheridan as young versions of Storm, Jean Grey, and Cyclops. Oscar Isaac is set to star as the film’s title mutant antagonist. Nightcrawler, created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, made his first comic book appearance in “Giant Size X-Men” #1 back in 1975. Singer previously cast Alan Cumming as an older (and now parallel timeline) version of Nightcrawler in his X2. X-Men: Apocalypse is being written by Simon Kinberg from a treatment by Mike Dougherty, Dan Harris and Kinberg. Said to be the conclusion of a trilogy started with X-Men: First Class and continued with X-Men: Days of Future Past, cameras will start rolling on the next adventure in Montreal beginning in April.

This is pretty great casting. Now granted haven't seen a lot from him, but what I did see of him in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was pretty darn good. Alan Cumming did an amazing job with the character in X2 so this kid has a lot to live up to. The one thing that I am questioning is if they are going to explore the backstory of his birth (his parents are Mystique and  Azazel), but with comic-book father now dead after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past I don't think they will, but it'll be interesting to see how they handle the character in X-Men: Apocalypse.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that “Homeland,” “Firefly” and “Gotham” actress Morena Baccarin has joined the cast of 20th Century Fox’s long awaited Deadpool feature film as the female lead and romantic interest of the title character. Baccarin was previously-reported as being one of six actresses that were testing for the role. She’s joined by Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth in addition to T.J. Miller, Ed Skrein and Gina Carano. The film will also feature the mutant Colossus, though Daniel Cudmore has confirmed he will not appear as the character. Tim Miller is set to direct the movie from a script by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Deadpool is currently scheduled for a release on February 12, 2016.

This is fantastic casting. She is a fantastic actress in everything I have seen her in. She is killing it right now on Gotham (no matter what you think of the show) and I think she will be fantastic in this movie. The only question is who she will be playing and I've heard that she could be Copycat which makes sense for this because that was Deadpool's love interest in the comics and she would fit in well with the film storyline.

Who’s the black private dick that’s a sex machine to all the chicks and who is also getting a big screen reboot? If you said Shaft, you’re damn right! TheWrap is reporting that New Line Cinema has acquired the rights to the Shaft franchise and is, alongside Davis Entertainment’s John Davis, developing a reboot. Originally a 1970 novel by Ernest Tidyman, Shaft was famously made into a feature film, directed by Gordon Parks, in 1971. Richard Roundtree played the title role, Detective John Shaft, in the original film, immediately reprising the role for two sequels: Shaft’s Big Score in 1972 and Shaft in Africa in 1973. Later in ’73, Roundtree played Shaft once again for a short lived CBS television series. Although the small screen “Shaft” ran for only seven episodes, Roundtree returned more than two decades later for a cameo in John Singleton’s Shaft reboot. Although Samuel L. Jackson played the lead in the 2000 release, the film actually maintained a singular continuity with the rest of the franchise, revealing that Jackson’s Detective John Shaft was actually the nephew of Roundtree’s. Although a new actor is expected to take the lead in the new Shaft, there’s no telling yet whether the film will move forward as a full reboot or whether an attempt will be made to once again spin the latest franchise entry as a loose sequel.

This is great news to hear. I absolutely lover the first Shaft film and I think that this is a great time to reboot this film. Not a lot of people have seen the original tv show or the first two movie,s plus with the right director theis film could be amazing. The key for the film is casting the right person for Shaft and my choice would Idris Elba who could do a really great job in the film and New Line needs to get to him before Sony reels him in to play James Bond.

Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures have upped their first-look deal through July 2018, both companies announced today. The news comes just as TheWrap reports that plans are underway for a new feature film based on the life of Thomas Edison. “Through unrivaled imagination, talent and skill, J.J. has consistently entertained audiences around the world with his unique and creative approach to storytelling,” says Paramount’s Chairman CEO Brad Grey. “Paramount takes an incredible amount of pride in our longtime partnership with J.J. and the entire Bad Robot team, and we look forward to being their home for many more years to come.” “I am so grateful to Brad Grey and all of Paramount for giving Bad Robot such a supportive, creative, and collaborative home,” adds J.J. Abrams. “The whole Bad Robot Team looks forward to the coming years with our most excellent partners.” No official details on the Edison project are available quite yet but, according to the outlet, the film will “depict the legendary inventor as a rugged eccentric genius.” As always, check back for updates as they become available.

This is a great idea and news to hear. Thomas Edison is key influential figure in our history and he absolutely deserves a bio-pic about him. I know there a lot of mixed feelings about Edison and how he got to the top of the ladder. I'm really curious to see who gets cast because that will sort of tell the tale of how this film will play out.
