Weekend Movie News 6-13-14 to 6-15-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Following the rumored lineup of big screen DC Universe films that broke earlier this week comes word, via Hitfix, that "Game of Thrones" star Jason Momoa will be playing Aquaman in both Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Bear in mind, this news contradicts one of the details from Nikki Finke's Thursday report, claiming that Aquaman would not appear in the May 6, 2016 release and would instead make his debut in Justice League. It does, however, tie back to a report from last December that suggested Momoa had met to read for a mystery Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice role. Warner Bros. is likely to make some major reveals and/or confirmations about all of this at Comic-Con International in San Diego next month.

This is amazing news. I know most people associate Mamoa with the failed Conan movie just a few years ago, but I thought the Mamoa gave an amazing  performance with little to work with. If he turns oit to be Aquaman then I think he is the right fit. Most people laugh at Aquaman (and rightfully so) but if you get the chance read the new 52 of Aquaman and your whole outlook will change (I know some won't but if you read comics like me then check it out).

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creative pair best known for creating "Smallville," have, according to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter, sold their spec screenplay Captain Nemo to Columbia Pictures with Maleficent producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel set to produce.

Captain Nemo is said to offer a new look at the Jules Verne character (who appeared in multiple Verne stories, most notably Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas).

Walt Disney Pictures was planning their own reimagining of Nemo with a new 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea feature film. McG was, at one time, attached, as was David Fincher. The current state of that project is unknown.

This is pretty interesting news. Now I will say that I do know who Captain Nemo is, but I don't really know much about him. It'll be really interesting to see how Sony will portray the captain and I can't wait to get a little insight.

One of the many new characters introduced in Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier was Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones, a character that has been a long-running villain in the comics. Though he started the film as an ally, like so many other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Rumlow wasn't who he seemed. Having taken quite a beating by the end of the film, where does that leave him for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Speaking with Collider, Grillo was asked about a potential return to the series with Captain America 3, currently scheduled to open the same day as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. "I'm cautiously optimistic that you will see me in the not too distant future in the next installment of Captain America," Grillo said.

He then echoed something he had previously said about "The Winter Soldier" in that the film was an origin tale for the character, before revealing that discussions have been had about where Rumlow goes next. "We’ve had multiple discussions about what comes after that, that thing," Grillo said. "So, you know, it’s obvious Rumlow is covered in rubble and burned to crisp at the end, but you see he’s still there. They don’t do that for no reason."

When prompted that he would need a costume for his return, Grillo replied: "He needs a costume! Coincidentally it could be a mask with a crossbones on it." Set to be directed once again by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America 3 is slated for release on May 6, 2016.

This is pretty cool to hear. Like Captain Nemo, I'm not to familiar with Crossbnes and didn't know much about him before Cap 2 and still don't even after watching the film. If he comes back for Cap 3 then hopefully will get to know more about him.

20th Century Fox has released a new video which shows what happened between Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Hitting theaters on July 11, 2014, the Matt Reeves-directed sequel stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Enrique Murciano, Kirk Acevedo and Judy Greer.

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

This is really cool to see. It's really nice to see what has happened between the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I'm sure that this video will be apart of the film's opening credits/scenes and give everyone a little more insight. I honestly cannot wait to see this film.

Stoney Lake Entertainment has released the international poster for Left Behind which you can view below. Hitting theaters on October 3, the Vic Armstrong-directed action adventure stars Nicolas Cage, Chad Michael Murray, Cassi Thomson, Nicky Whelan, Lea Thompson, Jordan Sparks, Quinton Aaron and Martin Klebba.

Left Behind follows Rayford Steele (Nicolas Cage) who is piloting a commercial airliner just hours after the Rapture when millions of people around the globe simply vanish. Thirty thousand feet over the Atlantic, Rayford is faced with a damaged plane, terrified passengers, and a desperate desire to get back to his family. On the ground, his daughter, Chloe Steele (Cassi Thomson) is among those left behind, forced to navigate a world of madness as she searches for her lost mother and brother.

The movie is based on the New York Times bestselling book series of the same name, co-authored by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye.

This is actually a pretty cool poster. It reminds me a lot of another Nicholas cage film Con Air. Nick Cage is making somewhat of a mini comeback starting with his most recent film Joe (which I highly recommend) and this one (while it sounds crazy) could be pretty good.
