6-4-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

In addition to the episodes of a new "Star Wars" trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank. "We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX."

Trank states, "The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time." Trank previously directed Chronicle and is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox.

Last month, it was announced that Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards will direct the first "Star Wars" stand-alone movie hitting theaters on December 16, 2016.

This is really awesome news. I absolutely loved Chronicle and I have some high hopes for his vision on the Fantastic Four and I think that Star Wars will be a great fit for him. It'll be interesting which film he'll direct. It's been rumored that with Gareth Edwards possibly directing a Boba Fett movie, that Josh Trank will be directing a Young Han Solo movie. If that holds true then I'm on board for this 100%.

Deadline reports that Djimon Hounsou has joined the cast of WB's upcoming Tarzan as Chief Mbonga, a character that appeared in a number of Edgar Rice Burroughs' original stories. Hounsou can be next seen on the big screen as Korath the Pursuer in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Featuring a screenplay by Stephen Sommers and Stuart Beattie, the live-action film will adapt Edgar Rice Burroughs' 1912 book "Tarzan of the Apes" but is rumored to pick up at a point well past Tarzan's "origin story," instead following the hero after having returned to and been assimilated by British civilization of the era. The action will then follow the Burroughs hero on a mission into the Congo under orders from Queen Victoria.

Alexander Skarsgård will star as the titular hero along with Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz. Directed by David Yates, Tarzan is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1, 2016.

This is excellent casting. As we all know it's never wrong to recruit talent and Djimon Hounsou is talent (he's been nominated for 2 Academy Awards). I feel that he is a perfect fit for this movie and with David Yates directing it I can say that I am actually looking forward to this movie.

On the heels of Maleficent's strong performance at the box office, Walt Disney Pictures has, according to a story at Variety, set The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Parts 1 & 2 helmer Bill Condon to direct a live-action version of their 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast.

A traditional fairytale, the earliest published version of the story was written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and appeared in France in the 18th century. Guillermo del Toro has also been planning a live-action feature film version at Warner Bros. with Emma Watson attached to star.

Beauty and the Beast joins fellow animation-to-live-action projects like Cinderella, The Jungle Book and Cruella, all in various stages of development at the studio. Like Beauty and the Beast, Disney's new version of The Jungle Book will have to contend with an upcoming Warner Bros. version.

This is an interesting choice. Now look am I fan of the Twiight movies no, but I'm very curious to see what Condon does with the film. I can't honestly say that I blame Disney either (eventhough the film wasn't all that great) Maleficent made almost $200 million worldwide this past weekend. It'll also be interesting how this version will compete with Warner Bros. version which is being directed by Guillermo del Toro, but I can't wait to see this film.

Now in production in Atlanta, Georgia, the second installment of the Divergent action adventure franchise, Insurgent, has added Naomi Watts to its cast. The Hollywood Reporter has the story, bringing word that Watts will play Evelyn, the leader of the Factionless, in both Insurgent and Allegiant, Parts I & II.

Watts joins Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, Suki Waterhouse, Jonny Weston and Mekhi Phifer for the March 20, 2015 release, based on author Veronica Roth's New York Times best seller.

Insurgent raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the dystopian ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.

This is also great casting. Naomi Watts is one of the best actresses in Hollywood and she doesn't get the credit that she deserves. Now am I hug fan of the Divergent franchise no and I honestly don't know what her character is all about, but it'll be great to see Naomi Watts take this challenge and hopefully help improve the franchise.

Although Vince Vaughn was being eyed to headline the project opposite Will Ferrell last year, Deadline today reports that Paramount Pictures' Daddy's Home is now looking to re-team Ferrell with his The Other Guys costar Mark Wahlberg. Although Etan Cohen was formerly planning to direct, the outlet notes that Sean Anders and John Morris are now in talks to helm.

The film, written by Brian Burns and Adam McKay & Chris Henchy and Cohen, is the story of a mild-mannered radio executive (Ferrell) who strives to become the best stepdad ever to his wife's two children, but complications ensue when their freewheeling, freeloading real father (Wahlberg) arrives, forcing stepdad to compete for the affection of the kids.

This film sounds absolutely hilarious.I thought The Other Guys was pretty funny and hopefully this film will do the same. Also anytime you get McKay and Ferrell to work together on a film you know it will be pretty hilarious. It'll also be different to see Mark Wahlburg to step foot into a differetn type of role we're used to seeing him in and it's something to keep your eye on.
