Weekend Movie News 5-30-14 to 6-1-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

On Friday that Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers, The Other Guys), Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball, We're the Millers) and Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) were the frontrunners to take over the director's chair for Marvel's Ant-Man from Edgar Wright. Now Ain't It Cool News has learned that Marvel Studios has made an offer to McKay and that he is talks to take the job. We should get official confirmation soon, as Marvel wants to keep the project on schedule for a July 17, 2015 release.

McKay worked together with Ant-Man star Paul Rudd on the "Anchorman" films. Also starring in the Marvel film are Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson and Corey Stoll.

Ant-Man follows a biochemist Dr. Hank Pym using his latest discovery, a group of subatomic particles, to create a size-altering formula. Though his first self-test goes awry, he develops an instrument that helps him communicate with and control insects. Paul Rudd will play Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Michael Douglas stars as Hank Pym.

UPDATE: Adam McKay was said to be in advanced talks last night, but now The Hollywood Reporter says he has pulled out of the negotiations. The decision is said to be his alone.

This is bad news. Marvel has now lost two directors for the film and the film hasn't began filming and it's still on track to be released next summer. I was excited for Edgar Wright's vision and then after hearing McKay was taking over I got a little more excited and now with this news I think my excitment for the film has gone way down. Hopefully everything will work itself out and we'll get an awesome movie.

Although we saw Thanos at the end of Marvel's The Avengers, we haven't seen him since and he hasn't been featured in the two full trailers for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn has previously revealed that the August 1 release is connected to Thanos, however.

Now, Latino-Review is reporting that the villain will be voiced by Josh Brolin in Guardians of the Galaxy. They say: "An article on James Gunn's post-production process reported a scene with Thanos on a rocket throne in Act 3, which suggests an appearance long enough that someone is going to have to voice the Mad Titan, someone that could take the part into Avengers 3 as a major villain.

That meant Marvel was looking for an actor of some caliber, someone that could give a performance to a very complex, but very purple-skinned alien villain. The reported actor is none other than Josh Brolin. He'll be providing the voice of Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy and with a name and reputation like that, it's likely he'll join James Spader and Tom Hiddleston as actors who have tried to kill The Avengers." Joss Whedon has hinted before that we wouldn't be seeing Thanos take on The Avengers until Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

"Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful; he is not someone you can just trot out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale. He is definitely a part of what I have got going on. The thing about The Avengers is that they are very powerful but not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment."

This news is awesome. Eventhough Josh Brolin has been in some pretty bad films here of late (Jonah Hex or Oldboy anyone?) I'm still a fan of his (heck he was one of the three guys that I wanted to play Batman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice). I think that he'll do an awesome job and I can't wait to see him in the role of Thanos.

Open Road Films has debuted the new trailer and poster for Eli Roth's The Green Inferno, the horror thriller opening in theaters on September 5. You can check out both below.

Directed, co-written, and produced by Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever), the film follows a group of student activists who travel from New York City to the Amazon to save the rainforest. However, once they arrive in this vast green landscape, they soon discover that they are not alone…and that no good deed goes unpunished.

This trailer is freaky as hell. With that being said I'm pumped for this film. I'm huge fan of Eli Roth's work and this looks to be one of his best yet. Honestly September can't get here fast enough.

Although it was reported back in April that Mark Rylance was up for the role, TheWrap is now bringing word that The Amazing Spider-Man star Rhys Ifans will play Zanik Hightopp, father to Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter, in the upcoming sequel to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass.

The original film, itself a sequel of sorts to Lewis Carroll's 19th century texts, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass," starred Mia Wasikowska alongside Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, Matt Lucas, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen, Timothy Spall, Christopher Lee, Paul Whitehouse and Barbara Windsor and grossed more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.

Through the Looking Glass is slated to hit theaters May 27, 2016.

This is really great casting. I absolutely love Rhys Ifans's work and I think that this is the perfect role for him. It'll be interesting to see how he handles this role. Plus I think it'll also be great to see both him and Johnny Depp on the Big screen togehter.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has made a one week shift for Sex Tape, a comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel from director Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher). The film will now be released on July 18, 2014. The studio said that with it being "one of the best weekends of the year, the date allows the studio to enjoy an additional week of summer playtime."

The three other wide releases that weekend include Jupiter Ascending, Planes: Fire & Rescue and The Purge: Anarchy.

In Sex Tape, when Jay (Segel) and Annie (Diaz) first got together, their romantic connection was intense – and though they’re still very much in love, ten years and two kids have cooled the passion. To kick things up a notch, they decide – why not? – to make a video of themselves trying out every position in "The Joy of Sex" in one marathon three-hour session. It seems like a great idea – until they discover that their most private video has gone public. With their reputations on the line, they know they're just one click away from being laid bare to the world... but in their race to reclaim their video, they'll find that it will expose even more than they bargained for.

Wow this is strange news. Honestly I think that this is personally a stupid move. Look the film was in trouble anyway,  it was already in a loaded weekend and now it's moved up to and even more loaded weekend. If it had moved back to August 8th (when it's only competition would be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy in it's second week) it could have made a lot more money. But studios are smarter than me so we'll see how this goes.
