Weekend Movie News 5-23-14 to 5-25-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

In a surprise announcement, Marvel Studios and Edgar Wright have revealed that Wright has departed Ant-Man. The official statement on the matter reads as follows:

Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on Ant-Man due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.

Written by Wright and Joe Cornish, Ant-Man is set to star Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson and Corey Stoll. The film follows a biochemist Dr. Hank Pym using his latest discovery, a group of subatomic particles, to create a size-altering formula. Though his first self-test goes awry, he develops an instrument that helps him communicate with and control insects. Paul Rudd will play Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Michael Douglas stars as Hank Pym.

This is pretty disappointing news. One of the main reasons I was excited about Ant-Man is Edgar Wright. It'll be interesting to see who Marvel gets to replace him and how the film will turn out now that it's just a little over a year away from hitting theaters.

Universal Pictures' action thriller Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson, has moved its release date two week earlier to July 25 (from August 8) and will now go up against the Dwayne Johnson-led Hercules, the Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel comedy Sex Tape and the dance franchise entry Step Up All In. Also opening in limited releases on that date are the Anton Corbijn drama A Most Wanted Man, the James Franco-led crime drama Good People, Joe Swanberg's Happy Christmas, Naomi Foner's Very Good Girls and Woody Allen's Magic in the Moonlight.

Written and directed by Luc Besson, Lucy also stars Morgan Freeman in an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

This is an interesting move. Lucy looks to be a great film and I'm excited to see it earlier but I'm shocked by the news. Had Lucy stayed on it's previous date then it would only be going up against the very skeptical Teenage Mutant Turtles reboot. Now it's being released in a loaded weekend as most people will see Hercules and Sex Tape. With this move the producers may have shot themselves in the foot.

With a release date of March 4, 2016 already in place, director Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel may be heading down under. The Daily Mail today reports that Scott has been spotted in Australia scouting locations for his return to the science fiction universe that began with his Alien in 1979. Green Lantern scribe Michael Green recently joined the project, rewriting a draft by Transcendence's Jack Paglen. Prometheus, released in 2012, stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron. Although none are confirmed as of yet, look for several of those names to return for the sequel, which is expected to enter production this fall.

This is really cool news. Australia is a beautiful country and this will set up nice well with Prometheus 2. Plus it is also cheaper to film a movie overseas than here in the states, so financially it makes perfect sense.

Dimension Films (via EW) has released eight new images from Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (including one behind-the-scenes pic) which you can check out below. Opening in theaters on August 22, the comic book adaptation stars Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Josh Brolin, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eva Green, Dennis Haysbert, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Jamie Chung, Ray Liotta, Juno Temple, Julia Garner and Stacy Keach.

These photos look awesome. I really enjoyed the first Sin City film and I'm really looking forward to the second installment. Hopefully with the new additions of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin and Ray Liotta will make this film better than I'm hoping it will be.

Paramount Pictures has debuted a new TV spots (the seventh, for those keeping track) for the upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction. You can check it out below Opening in theaters on June 27, Transformers: Age of Extinction is the fourth film in director Michael Bay’s global blockbuster franchise. Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Li Bingbing, Kelsey Grammer, Sophia Myles, T. J. Miller, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor and Titus Welliver star.

The film begins after an epic battle that left a great city torn, but with the world saved. As humanity picks up the pieces, a shadowy group reveals itself in an attempt to control the direction of history… while an ancient, powerful new menace sets Earth in its crosshairs. With help from a new cast of humans, Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) and the Autobots rise to meet their most fearsome challenge yet. In an incredible adventure, they are swept up in a war of good and evil, ultimately leading to a climactic battle across the world.

This is a pretty cool TV spot. It shows a new scene and a bunch of things we have seen in the past two previous trailers. Overall this furthers my excitement and heightens my hope for the film to not suck like the past two films.
