Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...
(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)
Peter Parker isn't the only Spider-Man, in fact there are a number of them. From the clone Ben Reilly to the new "Ultimate" Spider-Man Miles Morales all the way to the Spider-Man of 2099, Miguel O'Hara, there's been a handful of people to put on the mask and save the day. But will we ever see them on the big screen?
Speaking with The Playlist (via /Film), producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach were asked about the possibility of a non-Peter Parker Spider-Man on the big screen, to which Tolmach simply replied: "No." Arad echoed that answer and elaborated on it, saying:
"The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today's world in many ways. But to have multiple ones… I don't know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man."
I'm going to echo Arad and Tolmach's statement with a resounding no. In all honesty people only care about Peter Parker and the same goes for a Batman Beyond film in the sense that the general moviegoing audience is familiar with Bruce Wayne. Look would I like a Miles Morales yes, but it really wouldn't be good for business if a movie was based around him.
Dakota Fanning is set to headline Brain on Fire, an adaptation of Susannah Cahalan's memoir. Deadline reports that Charlize Theron's production company Denver and Delilah has secured the rights and has set Dakota Fanning to star. The book, "Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness" was published in 2012. On her official site, Cahalan describes it as follows:
One day, I woke up in a strange hospital room, strapped to my bed, under guard, and unable to move or speak. My medical records—from a month-long hospital stay of which I have no memory—showed psychosis, violence, and dangerous instability. Yet, only weeks earlier I had been a healthy twenty-four year old, six months into my first serious relationship and beginning a career as a cub reporter at the New York Post.
My memoir Brain on Fire chronicles the swift path of my illness and the lucky, last-minute intervention led by one of the few doctors capable of saving my life. As weeks ticked by and I moved inexplicably from violence to catatonia, $1 million worth of blood tests and brain scans revealed nothing. The exhausted doctors were ready to commit me to the psychiatric ward, in effect condemning me to a lifetime of institutions, or death, until Dr. Souhel Najjar—nicknamed Dr. House—joined my team. He asked me to draw one simple sketch, which became key to diagnosing me with a newly discovered autoimmune disease in which my body was attacking my brain, an illness now thought to be the cause of “demonic possessions” throughout history.
The premise of this movie sound really interesting. I'm very curious in which the tone the filmmakers will use (hopefully it's a dark and mysterious tone). Also Dakota Fanning is a really good choice for this role and it could be a role that she is remembered for for the rest of time.
Four-time Emmy-nominated Connie Britton ("Nashville," "Friday Night Lights," "Spin City," "24," "The West Wing") will appear as Victoria Lasseter in Lionsgate’s action comedy film American Ultra. The film started production earlier this month. Directed by Nima Nourizadeh (Project X) and written by Max Landis (Chronicle and the upcoming Frankenstein), American Ultra stars Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Topher Grace, Tony Hale, John Leguizamo, Bill Pullman and Walton Goggins.
American Ultra is a fast-paced action comedy about Mike (Eisenberg), a seemingly hapless and unmotivated stoner whose small-town life with his live-in girlfriend, Phoebe (Stewart), is suddenly turned upside down. Unbeknownst to him, Mike is actually a highly trained, lethal sleeper agent in a government program created by Victoria Lasseter (Britton). In the blink of an eye, as his secret past comes back to haunt him, Mike is thrust into the middle of a deadly operation and is forced to summon his inner action-hero in order to survive.
This film sounds hilarious. I mean you look at the cast (aside from Kristen Stewart) and look at the premise and you automatically know that this film will be funny. Also the film is being written by Max Landis who did an amazing job with Chronicle and I'm confident that he'll do a great job with this film as well.
Focus Features has acquired US distribution rights to London Has Fallen, the sequel of the 2013 film Olympus Has Fallen. Star Gerard Butler will return for the sequel written by Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt and Christian Gudegast. The film is being produced by Gerard Butler, Alan Siegel, Mark Gill, and Matt O'Toole. Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, John Thompson, Christine Crow, and Focus Features CEO Peter Schlessel will executive produce. Focus Features plans to release the film nationwide on October 2, 2015.
The sequel begins in London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances. His funeral is a must-attend event for leaders of the Western world. But what starts out as the most protected event on earth, turns into a deadly plot to kill the world's most powerful leaders and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. Only three people have any hope of stopping it: the President of the United States, his formidable secret service head (Butler), and an English MI-6 agent who rightly trusts no one.
Look I enjoyed Olympus Has Fallen but honestly I don't really needs a sequel. However it made $161 million on a $ 70 million budget, so while it didn't make a lot of money it made enough to get a sequel. Look will I be first in line to see it yes, but I'm not to overly thrilled about the idea of the film.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has slated Goosebumps for release on August 7, 2015, and their Untitled Smurfs Movie for release on August 5, 2016. The films were initially set for release on March 23, 2015 and August 14, 2015, respectively. The new dates have Goosebumps opening opposite Assassin's Creed while the Untitled Smurfs Movie is the first film to claim that date. It will also open slightly earlier internationally, targeting a July 2016 release.
Look it's now really a bad thing when studios move films to a new release date. In some cases (like The Smurfs) they probably need more time for the animation to look good. It will be interesting to see Assassin's Creed and Goosebumps going head to head. It'll be a fun week at the box office.
