5-8-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

20th Century Fox has brought online the new domestic and international trailers for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes which you can watch below! Opening in theaters on July 11, the Matt Reeves-directed sequel stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Enrique Murciano, Kirk Acevedo and Judy Greer.

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

Apes on horses, Apes on horses! Holy crap this trailer is awesome. I really enjoyed Rise of the Planet of the Apes and this one looks to better. No one knows how excited I am to see this film.

With production having officially started this week for The Fantastic Four, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that "The Wire" and "House of Cards" actor Reg E. Cathey has joined the cast of the film as Dr. Franklin Storm, the father of Sue (Kate Mara) and Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan).

Accused of murder and thought to be dead in the first volume of the comic series, Dr. Storm actually operated on and saved his daughter's life when she suffered a life threatening injury at the hands of the Mole Man. Following his actual death just one issue later, Sue and Reed named their first child Franklin after him. In Marvel's "Ultimate" universe, however, Dr. Storm is partially responsible for the creation of the Fantastic Four. Could we be seeing this version of the character on the big screen?

Jamie Bell, Jordan, Mara and Miles Teller will play the titular team in the upcoming film, which will also see Toby Kebbell as Victor Von Doom and Tim Blake Nelson as Harvey Elder, aka The Mole Man. Directed by Josh Trank, The Fantastic Four is set for release on June 19, 2015.

This is some really great casting. Now I know people have a lot of concerns with the film and rightfully so, but they are adding some quality talent with this casting. I really loved Cathey in The Mask and I can't wait to see what he does in this role.

Jay Roach (The Campaign, Game Change) is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' The Trade, Variety reports. The film is being produced by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Jennifer Todd through Pearl Street Films and features a screenplay by Affleck, his brother Casey and Dave Mandel.

The Trade is based on real-life players Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich who, in 1973, revealed that they had been swapping wives and fell for each other's partners. Although Damon and the elder Affleck had originally planned to star, that no longer appears to be the case.

I think this is not a great choice. Jay Roach has done some good stuff but he shouldn't be directing this. In all honestly I think Affleck would be a great choice for this but he's off doing other things I would have liked for them to go after David Fincher or even a David O'Russell. Anyway the film sounds interesting and I can't wait to see it.

The fifth entry in Universal Pictures' Bourne franchise has scored a new writer in Andrew Baldwin, the scribe behind the upcoming Pierre Morel actioner Bastille Day. He'll rewrite the Robert Ludlum adaptation from an existing script by Anthony Peckham.

Although the news comes just days after Matt Damon, the franchise's original star, reiterated his willingness to return to the role if director Paul Greengrass steps back behind the camera, it is expected that the fifth Bourne adventure will, as with 2012's The Bourne Legacy, follow Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross. Justin Lin is attached to direct with a release date of August 14, 2015 already in place. The Bourne Legacy also starred Edward Norton, Albert Finney, Joan Allen, Scott Glenn, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac.

This interesting choice. Baldwin hasn't done many movies so it'll be interesting what he comes up with. Overall though I can't wait for this film and Justin Lin is going to do an amazing job which I have no doubt in.

Although the movie lost Gerard Butler as Bodhi earlier this week, Point Break is moving forward and has announced a new cast member. Ray Winstone has been cast as Pappas, who was originally played by Gary Busey in the 1991 movie.

Luke Bracey is still set to play Johnny Utah in the Ericson Core-directed film. Point Break is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring.

This is some really good casting. Ray Winstone is one of the most underrated actors working today. Look it's hard to replace someone as crazy as Gary Busey but one person that could do it is Ray Winstone and I can't wait to see what he does with the character.
