5-7-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Lionsgate and Saban Brands are partnering to develop and produce an original live-action feature film based on the iconic "Power Rangers" property, it was announced today by creator of "Power Rangers" Haim Saban and Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer. The two companies noted that, with an extensive and extremely devoted worldwide fan base as well as a deep and detailed mythology, the "Power Rangers" are primed for the big screen. The new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world.

"Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level," said Saban. "They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from 'The Hunger Games' to 'Twilight' and 'Divergent.' In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we're confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own." "We're thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise," said Feltheimer. "The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come."

Saban's "Power Rangers" franchise is the brainchild of Haim Saban, creator and producer of the original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" hit series that launched in 1993. Following its introduction, "Power Rangers" quickly became the most-watched children's television program in the United States and remains one of the top-rated and longest running boys live-action series in television history. The series follows the adventures of a group of ordinary teens who "morph" into superheroes and save the world from evil. It is seen in more than 150 markets around the world, translated into numerous languages and is a mainstay in the most prominent international children's programming blocks. 20th Century Fox previously released two feature films, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie in 1995 and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie in 1997.

I'm literally excited for this. Look Power Rangers is my childhood and I grew up with it and I'm glad to see it back on the big screen. Now the past two power rangers films wrren't to successive (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie made $66 Million worldwide and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie made $9 million worldwide) so it'll be interesting to see how this film does but overall I'm excited and I am literally geeking out.

A new big screen take on the modern stone age family is on the way from Warner Bros. Animation. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Chris Henchy ("The Campaign") is providing the screenplay with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay executive producing through Gary Sanchez Productions. A comical take on a prehistoric family, "The Flintstones" ran for six seasons, setting a record for a primetime animated series that would not be beat for nearly thirty years (when it was overtaken by "The Simpsons"). The franchise was previously brought to the big screen as a live-action film in 1994 and was followed by a sequel, The Flinstones in Viva Rock Vegas in 2000.

Seth MacFarlane was developing an animated reboot of the property a few years ago, but plans for it ultimately failed to move forward. Although no date for the new film has been announced, Warner Bros. did, just yesterday, put down two placeholders on their release calendar for unspecified animated project. The first will arrive February 10, 2017 and the second is set for February 9, 2018.

I think this is the right way to go with The Flintstones. I mean look what Sony has done with The Smurfs. Now I did love the first two live-action films but they weren't quite what i was looking for in a Flintstones movie. so I think this is a great idea and I hope turns out well.

Focus Features, Entertainment One, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Blumhouse Productions announced today that Leigh Whannell will direct the upcoming horror sequel Insidious: Chapter 3, for which he also is providing the screenplay. Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions, which produced both previous entries in the franchise, is producing the next installment along with Oren Peli and James Wan. Whannell has written both Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, which earned more than $40 million at the box office in its opening weekend making it one of the largest horror genre openings ever and one of the biggest openings for a film released in the month of September.

Peter Schlessel, Focus Features’ CEO, said, “It’s with great pleasure that we turn the 'Insidious' franchise over to the co-creator Leigh Whannell. We are all excited to see in what direction Leigh takes the next installment and we are also glad to welcome James Wan to his new role as producer.” “We are all excited to bring a third film to audiences and know James and Leigh have great things in store for our fans," added Blum. "eOne and SPWA have been incredible partners on the 'Insidious' franchise and we look forward to working together along with Focus Features, James Wan and Leigh on the next installment.”

The first Insidious told the story of Josh and Renai Lambert and their son Dalton, confronting the demons that possess the young boy. Insidious: Chapter 2 then followed the haunted Lambert family as they sought to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.  Focus Features, which acquired the rights to release Insidious: Chapter 3 from FilmDistrict, plans to bring the film to U.S. theaters on April 3, 2015. eOne will distribute the picture in Canada, U.K. and Spain. Sony will distribute the picture in the rest of the world.

I feel that this is the right idea. I mean with James Wan leaving to go do other projects the next best thing you can do is get the writer who wrote the films. Leigh Whannell did a great job on the first two films and I'm excited to see what he can do with the franchise behind the camera.

Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids star Rebel Wilson is set to headline a big screen remake of director Howard Zieff's 1980 comedy Private Benjamin, The Wrap reports. Goldie Hawn starred in the original film as the title character, a newlywed who, upon the sudden death of her husband, decides to join the Army. The new version is said to follow two women, a wealthy city girl and a redneck, in the same situation. Wilson will play the latter character.

The original film, a substantial box office hit and the recipient of three Oscar nominations, spawned a CBS television series, which ran for three seasons. Mark Gordon, who previously planned to remake the franchise in 2010 with Anna Faris in the lead, is producing.

This is what I call perfect casting. I mean Rebel Wilson is one of the funniest people in Hollywood today and this film is a good fit for her. I feel that if this film can go down the raunchy avenue then it could be one of the greatest comedies of all-time so I'm really excited about this news.

Universal Pictures has released the new restricted trailer for Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West which you can watch below. MacFarlane directs, produces, co-writes and plays the role of the cowardly sheep farmer Albert in A Million Ways to Die in the West. The comedy co-stars Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Sarah Silverman, Giovanni Ribisi and Neil Patrick Harris.

In the May 30 release, after a cowardly sheep farmer backs out of a gunfight, his fickle girlfriend leaves him for another man. When a mysterious and beautiful woman rides into town, she helps him find his courage and they begin to fall in love. But when her husband, a notorious outlaw, arrives seeking revenge, the farmer must put his newfound courage to the test.

This trailer is absolutely hilarious. I honestly can't wait to see the movie (I get early screening thanks to everyone's support). the thing about this film is I hope that they didn't put all of the best jokes in the trailer because that would ruin the film me. But this film has the chance to be the best comedy of the year and even better than Ted.
