5-19-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Following three teasers and a Q&A at the film's Facebook page, Marvel Studios has brought online the full new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy. Check it out below and let us know what you think about the trailer in the comments!

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

Written and directed by James Gunn, the film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Karen Gillan, Gregg Henry, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker and Vin Diesel. Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters on August 1.

This trailer looks awesome. Marvel has does everything right with this film so far and this trailer gets me even more excited for the film. I love how this trailer gave us a little more insight into what the film is going to be about and what direction it's going to go in.

Following a huge first weekend at the box office for Godzilla, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman revealed today that a sequel is already in the works. Legendary Pictures, which put up 75% of the money to make the film (Warner Bros. took care of the rest), is now Universal Pictures' partner, but Legendary and Warner Bros. will team on the sequel again. It is assumed that director Gareth Edwards would return to direct. Made for about $160 million, the film earned an impressive $196.2 million worldwide this weekend, with $93.2 million of that coming from the domestic box office and $103 million from international markets.

I'm not surprised by this news. Look the film has an impressive weekend at the box office and it was liked by audiences and critics alike. I really enjoyed the film and it had a few mistakes but I think they'll be fixed. Now the interesting will be on the partnership of Legendary. If they work Warner Bros. then we'll get another great film, but if they go with Universal then we have the opportunity to see Godzilla vs. King Kong as King Kong is owned by Universal. So let's hold out some hope for them working with Universal.

We learned last week that Warner Bros. Pictures had set a November 18, 2016 release date for "Harry Potter" spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and now comes word via Nikki Finke that Gravity helmer Alfonso Cuaron is "deep in talks" to direct the film. Cuaron also previously directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The film, based on J.K. Rowling's world of witches and wizards and inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook of the same name, will follow the adventures of the book's fictitious author, Newt Scamander.

The first in a planned trilogy set in the wizarding world, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted "Harry Potter" fans. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the "Harry Potter" books or seen the films, but Newt's story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry's gets underway.

This is some really great news to hear. For one as mentioned in the story is that Cuaron  has dabbled in the Harry potter universe and secondly he is now an Academy Award winning director for his work on Gravity. He has gotten 10X better in directing since Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and is more respected so if he accepts then it's a great fit.

This weekend, Sony Pictures Classics has brought online the teaser trailer for director Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher, starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller and Anthony Michael Hall. Opening in limited theaters on November 14, Foxcatcher tells the gripping, true story of Olympic Wrestling Champion brothers Mark Schultz (Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Ruffalo) and their relationship with the eccentric John du Pont (Carell), heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune that led to murder.

Wow this teaser trailer looks great. I'm really looking forward to this film and it has Oscar potential written all over it. I'm already calling it right here on May 19th 2014 that Steve Carell will win the Academy Award for Best actor at the Academy Awards next year.

Sylvester Stallone and a large portion of his cast from The Expendables 3, including Jason Statham, Antonio Banderas, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren and Arnold Schwarzenegger, hit the Croisette in Southern France to promote the film at the Cannes Film Festival. Click the photo above for a bigger version!

The first two movies in the series have been hugely successful, grossing $188 million in North America and $580 million globally, so a third chapter was to be expected. Unlike the first two movies, Lionsgate is releasing The Expendables 3 with a PG-13 rating and when asked about it at the event, Stallone explained, "We want to reach as many people as possible. It's very close to an R, believe me, it's right there. But I think we owe it to the next generation. We thought we'd join that club for a while."

The Expendables 3 is due out on August 15.

I honestly think this is a bad move. Look people don't want to see these badass old-school action stars in a watered down film. I get the point of wanting more people to see it but don't change the rating. Just make a good film and have some great marketing behind it and the film will be fine.
