5-21-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

It’s been nearly five years since Walt Disney Pictures first announced plans for a live-action comedy, Tink, set to follow the adventures of Peter Pan‘s mischievous fairy, Tinker Bell. Although Pitch Perfect 2 star and director Elizabeth Banks was originally attached to headline the project, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that the very small role has gone to Academy Award winning actress Reese Witherspoon. Finding Dory‘s Victoria Strouse, meanwhile, is attached to provide the screenplay. Created by J.M. Barrie for 1904’s “Peter Pan,” Tink, quite likely the world’s most famous fairy, was originally played onstage by nothing more than a miniature spotlight. She’s best known today, however, for the animated Disney version, who first appeared in the studio’s 1953 feature Peter Pan. Lately, Tink has been the focus of her own direct-to-DVD animated franchise with the latest adventure, Tinker Bell and the Legend of the Never Beast having been released earlier this year. Tink is one of two different big screen Tinker Bell movies in the works. It was announced last fall that Night at the Museum‘s Shawn Levy is developing a still-untitled live action comedy that will star Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy as the sprite. Witherspoon will also produce Tink alongside Bruna Papandrea.

This is great casting. As I've said before (Hot Pursuit aside) Reese Witherspoon is one of the best, if not the best actress working in Hollywood today. I think she is the perfect person to play Tinker Bell. However I'm a little surprised that Disney is making a live-action Tinker Bell movie. I mean there is a live-action Peter Pan movie being made, but that is by a different studio and while Peter Pan is under public domain so I think they should make a new live-action Peter Pan film with Reese Witherspoon as Tinker Bell. I love the casting, but not the film.

The upcoming remake of The Crow, set to be directed by Corin Hardy (The Hallow), is, according to Deadline, looking to cast Birdman star Andrea Riseborough as Top Dollar. According to the outlet, the gender-swapped version of the character will serve as the film’s chief antagonist, as the character did in Alex Proyas’ original 1994 adaptation. There, Top Dollar was played by Michael Wincott. Planned as a gritty reboot of the iconic James O’Barr comic book character, The Crow will star Jack Huston (“Boardwalk Empire”) as Eric Draven, a man who returns from the grave as a supernatural antihero on a mission to avenge his wife’s murder, so that his soul can finally rest. “Downtown Abbey” star Jessica Brown Findlay is also attached to play Draven’s murdered girlfriend Shelly in flashbacks. In the original comics, Top Dollar was little more than a common drug dealer, although the character was rewritten in the 1994 film to become the kingpin of a criminal syndicate. The character subsequently appeared on the small screen, played by John Pyper-Ferguson on the television series “The Crow: Stairway to Heaven.” Featuring a screenplay by Cliff Dorfman, the new take on The Crow is produced by Ryan Kavanaugh, Kevin Misher, Jeff Most and the original film’s Edward R. Pressman.

I really like this casting. From what little I saw of her in Birdman she was really good and I think she can play a great villain in The Crow. I like how they are changing the character's gender. Honestly have no problem with that simply because it isn't a central element of the character (a kingpin can be male or female). I'm a huge fan of the original The Crow film and while this film has been through a lot and hopefully it turns out great and does justice to the original film.

With the upcoming Magic Mike sequel, Magic Mike XXL, hitting the big screen in just over a month, leading man Channing Tatum today took to Twitter to share a new poster for the July 1 release and you can check it out below. Tatum joins fellow returning stars Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias, who will all be joined by newcomers Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games franchise), Donald Glover (“Community”), Amber Heard (The Rum Diary), Andie MacDowell (Footloose), Jada Pinkett Smith (“Gotham”) and Michael Strahan (“Live with Kelly and Michael”) with Emmy Award winner Gregory Jacobs (Behind the Candelabra), who served as a producer on Magic Mike, directing and producing. Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, Magic Mike XXL finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways. Magic Mike XXL also reunites Magic Mike producers Nick Wechsler, Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin, with a screenplay by Carolin. Soderbergh, who directed the first film, will executive produce.

Magic Mike XXL

I honestly don't know what to say about this poster. I mean it does capture the what the film is about and it looks like they had good time shooting the photo. I will say though they need to put a shirt Kevin Nash because my god he looks terrible, granted better than I do, but for the love of god just do that for me.

Sony Pictures’ upcoming adaptation of the IDW comic book series “Zombies vs. Robots” has today scored an Academy Award nominated screenwriter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Craig Borten, who wrote Dallas Buyers Club alongside Melisa Wallack, has signed on to draft the film, which is going by the title Inherit the Earth. As reported earlier this year, Andrew Adamson (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe) is attached to direct. Launched in 2005, “Zombies vs. Robots” is officially described on IDW’s site as follows: It’s tech prowess meets undead mayhem! Eisner Award-nominated team of artist Ashley Wood (“Popbot”) and writer Chris Ryall (“The Great and Secret Show”), a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies has only one chance at recovery – a team of robots that must protect and clone a lone surviving human baby. They just need to do this amidst the endless hordes of zombies who have been driven rabid by their frustration at inedible bots and their lust to eat the one living brain left on the planet. Set to be produced by Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, Dave Alpert and Rick Jacobs, Inherit the Earth is a co-production of Platinum Dunes, Circle of Confusion and IDW Publishing with Sony Pictures set to distribute. Previously, Oren Uziel (the upcoming Kitchen Sink) was attached to script.

This is a great choice to write a film. Now Borten has only done one film (that being Dallas Buyers Club), but he got an Academy Award nomination for that film. I think he has a lot of ability and I'm curious to see how he handles this type of film. Along with this he is writing the script for a John Rockefeller so this guy is going to be around for a long time.

Broad Green Pictures announced today the U.S. acquisition of Brad Furman’s The Infiltrator. Adapted by Ellen Brown Furman from the autobiography by Robert Mazur, The Infiltrator stars Emmy and Golden Globe winner Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad,” Argo) alongside Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Golden Globe nominee John Leguizamo (Chef), Benjamin Bratt (Traffic), Yul Vazquez (Captain Phillips), and Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone). Based on the true story of a fearless operative, the film relates the account of one of history’s largest and most elaborate stings. Set amidst the lavish excess of the 1980’s, The Infiltrator tells the story of undercover US Customs agent Robert Mazur (Cranston) AKA Robert Musella, who became a pivotal player for drug lords cleaning their dirty cash. He traded on mob connections to become the confidant to scores of the international underworld, and the bankers who enabled them. Laying his life on the line, he infiltrated the globe’s largest cartels and discovered just how deep into society their influence extended. The operation reeled in key players in a chain stretching all the way to Escobar. Their arrests would lead to the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, and shake the underground economy to its core. “I’m thrilled to be partnering with Broad Green Pictures,” says Furman. :This project was truly a labor of love for all involved, and I can’t wait for Broad Green, whose passion for film is unparalleled, to bring ‘The Infiltrator’ to a wide audience.” “Brad Furman is a major talent who has brought an exciting and intense piece of U.S history to screen,” says said CEO Gabriel Hammond and Daniel Hammond, Broad Green’s Chief Creative Officer. “We are eager to work with the filmmakers and cast to make sure their vision is realized for the release of this film.” “We are so proud of this movie,” adds Good Films Founder Miriam Segal, “and could not be happier to be partnering with the brilliant team at Broad Green Pictures, whose passion and commitment to excellence will ensure this extraordinary real-life thriller reaches and excites the broadest of U.S. audiences.” The deal was brokered on behalf of the filmmakers by WME, while Dylan Wiley, President of Specialty Releasing and Chris Tricarico, EVP Business Affairs handled for Broad Green. The Infiltrator is produced by Good Films’ Miriam Segal, with Bank Leumi, Good Films and LipSync co-financing.

This is great news to hear. As I always say I love it when I hear about studios picking up films because it gives the people who made the film a chance to show off all of their hard work. The film sounds really interesting and anything with Bryan Cranston has me interested to see.
