5-13-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Universal Pictures has released the new Crimson Peak trailer and international trailer, which offer new footage from director Guillermo del Toro’s gothic horror story starring Mia Wasikowska (Stoker, Alice in Wonderland), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, A Most Violent Year), Tom Hiddleston (Marvel’s The Avengers, Only Lovers Left Alive), Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy,” Pacific Rim) and Jim Beaver and you can check it out below. Directed by Del Toro, the man responsible for films like Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone, and written by both Del Toro and Matthew Robbins, Crimson Peak is a co-production between Legendary and Universal Pictures. Set in the aftermath of a family tragedy, the film follows an aspiring author, who is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers. Crimson Peak is produced by Del Toro, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Callum Greene with Jillian Share serving as executive producer. Look for it to hit both 2D theaters and IMAX beginning October 16!

This was a pretty creepy trailer. While I wasn't scared I was still a little terrified. Guillermo del Toro is mainly know for creature films and mind-bending thrillers outside of The Hellboy franchise and Pacific Rim. I honestly think that this film can be as good as Pan' Labyrinth (which del Toro also directed) and I'm really curious to see what creatures del Toro had created for the film.

Variety reports that Y Tu Mamá También and Elysium actor Diego Luna has joined the upcoming “Star Wars” spin-off film Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One in one of the lead roles. He’s set to star alongside Felicity Jones as a rebel soldier in the film along with Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Sam Claflin (Snow White and the Huntsman), and Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises). The cast for the film is set to expand even further, with comparisons being drawn to the Dirty Dozen and Magnificent Seven. The first in the “Star Wars Anthology” series of spin-off films, Rogue One will follow a rogue band of resistance fighters united to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy. “It’s the reality of war. Good guys are bad. Bad guys are good,” director Gareth Edwards said at Star Wars Celebration. John Knoll, the Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor who currently serves as chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic, is executive producing the film along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce with John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) attached to co-produce. It was also recently confirmed that Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech) will be providing the score. Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One is set for release on December 16, 2016.

This is pretty great casting. Now I honestly haven't seen Luna in much outside of Elysium, but from what I saw in Elysium he was actually pretty good. So far everything I've seen from the film is looking really good/ The cast, story and director are amazing and  cannot wait to see this Anthology film. It has a lot of pressure riding on it simply because if it doesn't succeed like Disney wants it to, then we could possibly not see anymore Anthology films.

Deadline brings word that 20th Century Fox has officially announced a new spin-off for their “X-Men” franchise with a feature adaptation of The New Mutants set to be directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars). Boone will pen the script along with Knate Gwaltney, the film will be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe,” Kinberg said. “And so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.” This marks the third big adaptation for Boone, who is also set to adapt The Vampire Chronicles at Universal, based on the Anne Rice series of novels, as well as an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand for Warner Bros. Pictures. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants first appeared in 1982 and focused on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training. The series was home to a number of lower profile mutants in comparison to the fan favorite X-Men, such as Cannonball, Cypher, Magik, Wolfsbane, and Dani Moonstar. A number of A-list mutants also appeared in the series though such as Professor Xavier, Magneto, Kitty Pryde and Deadpool, the later of whom made his comic book debut in New Mutants #98. Some members of the team have also appeared in the films as recently as X-Men: Days of Future Past including Blink (Fan Bingbing), Warpath (Booboo Stewart), and Sunspot (Adan Canto), though it remains to be seen if they will appear in the film. 20th Century Fox has previously set a 2018 release date for an X-Men film, which could be this project.

This is a great idea and a great choice. I think this is a perfect idea simply because we don't know what is going to happen to the cast of X-Men: Apocalypse on if they will return for future X-Men movies. This film will let you bring in a new set of mutants and test the audience on if they like the film and Fox will make their plans from there. As for Boone directing I think he's a great choice simply because he has done well working with young actors and that's what he'll do in this film as well. I'm curious how the film turns out, but I hope it ends up leading to a new group of X-Men for future films.

Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment have revealed (via IGN) the voice cast for the film version of PlayStation franchise Ratchet & Clank, which will include Paul Giamatti (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, San Andreas) as “Chairman Drek”; John Goodman (Monsters, Inc., Transformers: Age of Extinction) as “Grimroth”; Bella Thorne (Blended) as “Cora”; Rosario Dawson (“Marvel’s Daredevil,” Sin City) as “Elaris”; and action legend Sylvester Stallone as “Victor.” These celebrities join James Arnold Taylor as “Ratchet,” David Kaye as “Clank,” DS9’s Armin Shimerman as “Nefarious,” and Jim Ward as “Captain Qwark,” all reprising their voice roles from the original video game. “The collaborative relationship between Rainmaker Entertainment, Sony PlayStation, Insomniac Games and all our partners has helped us to bring this massive game franchise to the big screen,” said Rainmaker Entertainment’s Michael Hefferon. “Our outstanding celebrity talent together with the original voices from the game really bring these characters to life, and we are confident that ‘Ratchet & Clank’ will delight fans with its authenticity and charm, while families everywhere will find a new family-friendly buddy duo to love.” The film is based on the Insomniac Games franchise. The games focus on two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind, a foolhardy “lombax” who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own, while Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. The Ratchet and Clank characters were first introduced in 2002, with the games quickly becoming a successful series exclusive to Sony’s PlayStation consoles. They’ve sold 26 million copies worldwide. Ratchet & Clank will be directed by Kevin Munroe (TMNT) and Jericca Cleland (“Animism”) from a script by TJ Fixman, who penned all of the video games and the film will be released in theaters on April 29, 2016 by Focus Features.

I really like this cast. Now granted you can honestly get anybody to do a voice role and the film will be alright. I just think that this cast is an interesting one and I think they'll bring something unique to the film. To be honest I never played any of the games in the franchise, but I've seen gameplay footage and it looks really good and I'm curious to see how it will turn out on the big screen.

Warner Bros. Pictures has just released the trailer for their upcoming comedy, The Intern, starring Academy Award winners Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables, The Dark Knight Rises) and Robert De Niro (Raging Bull, The Godfather: Part II) and you can check it below. Written and directed by the Oscar nominated Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give, It’s Complicated), The Intern stars De Niro as Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower who has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway). The film’s multi-generational cast also features Rene Russo (Thor), Anders Holm (“Workaholics”), Andrew Rannells (“Girls”), Adam Devine (“Pitch Perfect”), Celia Weston (“No Reservations”), Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars), Linda Lavin (Wanderlust), Zack Pearlman (“The Inbetweeners”), newcomer Jason Orley, and Christina Scherer (“Living with Uncle Charlie”). Meyers also produced the film, with Suzanne Farwell. Celia Costas served as executive producer. Meyers’ behind-the-scenes creative team is headed by Oscar-nominated director of photography Stephen Goldblatt (The Prince of Tides, The Help), Oscar-nominated production designer Kristi Zea (Revolutionary Road, GoodFellas), Oscar-nominated film editor Robert Leighton (A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally) and costume designer Jacqueline Demeterio (The Other Woman, “The Big C”). The music is by Theodore Shapiro (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Devil Wears Prada). The Intern hits theaters September 25.

This was a fun little trailer. It's really weird seeing Anne Hathaway and Robert DeNiro in a film like this. I think it has the chance to be a nice sleeper comedy hit. Nancy Meyers is a terrific screenwriter and I trust her to write really good films. When you have two Academy Award winning actors and Academy Award nominated screenwriter on the same film, I just can't see this film being anything but fantastic.
