5-12-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Dr. Richard Kimble is going back on the run. According to a story this morning at Deadline, Warner Bros. Pictures is developing a new big screen take on The Fugitive. WB’s specific plans for the new film are currently a mystery, however, and it is unclear whether or not the studio is planning a total reboot based on the original 1960s television series or if the new film will serve as a sequel to director Andrew Davis’ 1993 feature film. Created by Roy Huggins, “The Fugitive” ran for 120 episodes on ABC between 1963 and 1967. The series was subsequently turned into a feature film starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. Jones won an Academy Award for his performance as Deputy U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard and, in 1998, received his own spinoff, director Stuart Baird’s U.S. Marshals. Both films collectively grossed more than $470 million at the worldwide box office. Christina Hodson (upcoming Shut In) will provide the screenplay for the new film, which will also see Arnold and Anne Kopelson returning to produce. Although it’s been more than two decades since he played Kimble, Ford is lately no stranger to franchise sequels. He’s set to reprise his role as Han Solo for the first time in 30 years in this December’s much anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens and he’s also set to return for a Blade Runner sequel, also in development through WB.

This is great news to hear. I absolutely love The Fugitive and it's a really amazing movie if you haven't seen it. it's sequel is good, but not as good. I think there are a lot of different ways you can go with this film and I honestly hope Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones come back for the new film.

It might not be too surprising that Selma director Ava DuVernay is being courted to direct a Marvel Studios movie as per The Wrap, because she did direct the acclaimed Oscar-nominated film Selma last year.  They suggest that she’s either going to direct the announced  Black Panther or Captain Marvel movie, both of which are scheduled for 2018, and that Black Panther is more likely since it’s the earlier of the two. We won’t get into the presumptions being made by The Wrap about why Duvernay is in talks, because fact is that she’s proven herself as a director already, and Marvel Studios what a great job that she can do directing any movie but a big deal is being made about her possibly being the first woman to direct a movie for Marvel Studios. (Patty Jenkins was attached to direct Thor: The Dark World but she left the project and she’s now slated to direct Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman movie). According to the story, Marvel and DuVernay have been in talks for her to take over one of their comic book properties and that there’s an interest in doing something together although they’re talking to other directors for both movies mentioned. Scheduled for July 2018, Black Panther will star Chadwick Boseman, who will be introduced as T’Challa in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, while Captain Marvel will star a yet-to-be-cast actress as Carol Danvers who is given alien powers by the Kree. The latter is being written by Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve and it’s shooting for a November 2, 2018 release date.

If this works out then I'm excited for whichever film she does. We know from Selma (the most recent movie she directed) she can handle a lot of characters and she is a good storyteller and I think she would work well in the MCU. Now I don't want to come off racist or sexist, but either way I go I may end up saying something bad. It's kind of obvious that she likes doing African-American led films (noted by previous works) so it makes sense for her to direct Black Panther and it would be cool to see a female direct a male led superhero film. On the other hand I can see her directing Captain Marvel simply because she is a woman and the strong feminist types really want female directors to direct female led films. Either way I think she will end up doing one and I can't wait to see what she does.

Currently in theaters opposite Sofia Vergara in Anne Fletcher’s buddy comedy Hot Pursuit, Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line, Legally Blonde) has today lined up a new project with the original drama Pale Blue Dot. Variety has the news, reporting that Fox Searchlight has acquired the spec script for the film from relative newcomers Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi. Named for the famous photograph of Earth take by the Voyager 1 in 1990, Pale Blue Dot will follow Witherspoon as an astronaut who finds her very sense of reality coming undone after returning from an extended mission. Witherspoon recently received her second Oscar nomination for her performance as author Cheryl Strayed in Jean-Marc Vallée’s Wild. Among her upcoming projects are the science fiction satire Downsizing, reuniting the star with Election helmer Alexander Payne, and the Walt Disney Pictures family comedy Wish List, wherein Witherspoon will play a woman who, as a child, made ten wishes on a single coin at a wishing well, unaware that her coin never quite reached the well’s magical bottom. When the coin is finally jostled loose 25 years later, the wishes all come true in the middle of her unsuspecting adult life. Witherspoon is also set to also produce Pale Blue Dot alongside her Pacific Standard Productions partner Bruna Papandrea. Brown and DiGuiseppi will executive produce with Taylor Friedman and David Greenbaum overseeing for the studio.

I think this is a great idea. First off let me say that Hot Pursuit is quite possibly one of the worst films of all-time, but knowing how good of an actress Witherspoon is I'm willing to give her a pass. I think the film sounds awesome and I really think she can do well in this film. Fox Searchlight tends to put out a lot of great films and I think this one will be no different.

Universal Pictures has just released, via Buzzfeed, the first trailer for director Jon M. Chu’s Jem and the Holograms movie and you can check it out in player below. As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ Jem and the Holograms, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice. The musical adventure stars Aubrey Peeples as Jem, Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Aurora Perrineau as Shana, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja and Ryan Guzman as Rio. Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis also star in unrevealed roles. Created by Christy Marx, the original “Jem and the Holograms” series was a joint collaboration from Hasbro, Marvel and Sunbow Productions. It began airing in 1985 and ran for three seasons, following the adventures of the titular Jem, the musical superstar alter ego of a young woman named Jerrica Benton who, with the help of a holographic computer called Synergy, is able to clandestinely perform rock concerts with her friends. Jem and the Holograms is written by Ryan Landels and produced by Chu, Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun for SB Projects, Bennett Schneir, and Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis of Hasbro Studios. The movie hits theaters on October 23.

This is the worst trailer I have ever seen in my entire life. I've been saying for a long time that this movie is going to suck and I may be right that. You know what's crazy I actually like the 2001 version of the film called Josie and the Pussycats. This is literally the same plot as that film (don't believe me watch it and then watch this trailer). One of the main reasons why I have had so much hate for the film is because of director Jon M. Chu who was getting set to direct a He-Man movie and then ditched it for this. I'm actually glad he's not doing that film because he would've ruined He-Man. It's also bad when I agree with the YouTube comments on the trailer and they all thought what I was thinking in that this is going to be terrible. Now it could surprise us, but I have a better chance of being President of the United States then this film does of being good. i'm just mad that a studio is willing to do a movie on a second-rate, Josie and the Pussycats rip-off cartoon show that nobody watched and yet we still don't have a He-Man movie. I would love to say I'm looking forward to this film, but I don't want to lie to you all so I'm simply saying that I really don't want to see this film.

The very first poster is now online from Prisoners and Enemy director Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming action-thriller Sicario and you can check it our below. Set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival this month, Sicario is scripted by Taylor Sheridan and follows FBI agent Kate (Emily Blunt, Into the Woods, Edge of Tomorrow) and her conflicting journey that descends into the intrigue, corruption and moral mayhem of the borderland drug wars. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, Kate is exposed to the brutal world of international drug trafficking by members of a government task force who have enlisted her in their plan to take out a Mexican cartel boss. The cast also includes Academy Award winner Benicio del Toro (Traffic, Guardians of the Galaxy), Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men, Inherent Vice) along with Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead,” Fury), and Emmy Award nominee Victor Garber (“Alias,” “The Flash”). Sicario hits theaters in a limited release September 18 with plans to expand the following week, opening nationwide September 25. Producers on Sicario include Basil Iwanyk, Edward L. McDonnell, Molly Smith and Thad and Trent Luckinbill.

Sicario

This is a really neat poster. I say that in the sense that it doesn't give away much about the film and it has that mysterious feel to it and I like that about movies. Denis Villeneuve is one of the best up and coming directors in the business and so far he is 2 for 2 when it comes to small budget films (Prisoners and Enemy) and I think he could knock this one out of the park as well. I love the cast in the film and the film itself sounds really cool and I can't wait to see it.
