5-20-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Director Antoine Fuqua’s remake of The Magnificent Seven has found its villain today as Variety reports that Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead, Green Lantern) has signed on to play the story’s chief antagonist. He joins Denzel Washington (who took home an Oscar for Fuqua’s Training Day), Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Chris Pratt, The Equalizer‘s Haley Bennett, Boyhood‘s Ethan Hawke, Elite Squad‘s Wagner Moura, G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘s Byung-hun Lee, “White Collar’s” Matt Bomer and “Marvel’s Daredevil” star Vincent D’Onofrio. Originally drafted by “True Detective” scribe Nic Pizzolatto (since rewritten by The Blind Side‘s John Lee Hancock), The Magnificent Seven will remake the 1960 film directed by John Sturges that itself was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai. Sturges’ version starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn and Robert Vaughn as a group of disparate gunmen who come together to protect a Mexican village from bandits led by Eli Wallach. It led to a number of sequels as well as a CBS television series. The new film is said to feature a victimized mining town, taken over by a gold baron (Sarsgaard), rather than the Mexican village of the original.

This is terrific casting. Peter Sarsgard is a very talented and vastly underrated actor and I think adding him to this film is a great idea. Os far this cast is absolutely amazing and I think it is going to be a film that we will talk about for the rest of our lives. I am personally all for remakes and I think this one can be better than the last film.

Legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins will rejoin director Denis Villeneuve for Alcon Entertainment’s sequel to Blade Runner, having previously collaborated on 2013’s Prisoners and the upcoming Sicario. The Blade Runner sequel is scheduled to start principal photography in summer of 2016. Hampton Fancher (co-writer of the original) and Michael Green have written the original screenplay based on an idea by Fancher and Ridley Scott with the story taking place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original. Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Rick Deckard with Ryan Gosling previously said to be in talks for a role. Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson state: “Roger is an extraordinary talent and we are very excited that Denis and Roger have chosen to continue their collaboration in bringing the sequel to Blade Runner to the big screen.” Alcon Entertainment acquired the film, television and ancillary franchise rights to Blade Runner in 2011 from producer Bud Yorkin to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic science-fiction thriller. Yorkin will serve as a producer on the sequel along with Kosove and Johnson. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will also produce. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers. Ridley Scott will also executive produce. Released by Warner Bros., Blade Runner was adapted by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples from Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and was directed by Ridley Scott following his landmark Alien.” The film was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction).

This is fantastic news to hear. I know a lot of you don't know who this guy is, but if you know anything about cinematography then this is guy you should envy. He is one of the top 2 cinematographers of all-time along with Emmanuel Lubezki. The guy does beautiful work with the camera and the last time Deakins and Villeneuve worked together, they made the film Prisoners which was just simply amazing and with this type of film I look for an Oscar to come Deakins's way.

Production is underway for the upcoming Independence Day 2 and much of the cast from the first film is set to return. Among those is actress Vivica A. Fox, who recently offered the closest thing to a synopsis for the sequel that we have:“The aliens are back,” she tells MLive. “And it’s about 15 years later.” Blackfilm also caught up with the actress, who provided an update about production on the film. “I just started this week and walking back on that set and working with Jeff Goldblum and Roland Emmmerich the director, it was like the first film was yesterday. We are so blessed that the audience has been so hungry for this sequel to happen. Unfortunately, Will (Smith) decided that he didn’t want to come back. I’m working with a young up and coming actor named Jesse Usher, who has all the wonderful qualities that will remind you of Will but he’s playing my son. I’m glad that they chose Jesse Usher and Will gave them his blessing when they cast him. So, we’re going to hold it down and the sci-fi audience are so faithful that I think the sequel will be successful.” Fox opened up about where we will find her cahracter in the film, who has abandoned her profession from the first film. “I will not be on the poll. She was a stripper with a heart of gold, and who had said that she was doing it because the money was good. Now she’s a hospital administrator and she’s running the hospital and I’m glad that they moved her character forward as a woman.” Set to hit theaters June 24, 2016 (almost exactly 20 years after the original), Independence Day 2 features a script most recently rewritten by Carter Blanchard. Previous drafts were done by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, and then by James Vanderbilt. Fox is also joined in the film by Bill Pullman, Sela Ward, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner, as well as a cast of franchise newcomers that includes Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Travis Tope, Joey King, and Maika Monroe. The original Independence Day opened on July 3, 1996 and earned an impressive $817.4 million worldwide. Emmerich is also set to produce the sequel alongside Devlin and Harald Kloser.

I'm not surprised to hear this news. I mean with the casting of Jesse Usher it was pretty obvious that Vivica A. Fox would return. I'm still curious as to how they will write off Will Smith's character since he isn't returning. I (like Fox) am glad that they have advanced her character along and I'm interested as to how her character will play into the overall story.

It was revealed back in March that Paramount Pictures is looking at expanding the Transformers cinematic universe. Previously, I Am Legend‘s Akiva Goldsman signed on to work with Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura to create a franchise writer’s room to develop both sequels and spinoff features. Deadline now reveals that that writer’s room today has five new high-profile additions in the form of “The Walking Dead” and “Invincible” creator Robert Kirkman, the Iron Man writing pair of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, “Fringe” and “Lost” scribe Jeff Pinkner, and X-Men: The Last Stand and The Incredible Hulk‘s Zak Penn. Last year, Paramount released the franchise’s fourth film, Transformers: Age of Extinction, starring Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor. When asked if he’d be back for a sequel, Wahlberg previously stated that he’s contracted for “a couple more.” It is also believed that Bay himself will return to helm Transformers 5 after he completes work on his Benghazi drama 13 Hours. That film, is set to star Pablo Schreiber, John Krasinski, James Badge Dale, David Denman, Max Martini and Dominic Fumusa and is based on Mitchell Zuckoff”s nonfiction account of the 2012 terrorist attack on the US State Department Special Mission Compound in Benghazi, Libya. Age of Extinction grossed over $1 billion at the global box office with all four films combined grossing over $3.7 billion.

This is great news to hear. Look as a lot of you know I absolutely hate the Transformers franchise other than the first film. One of the big problems for me (many others) is the fact there is really no story in any of the films and the same plot has been used in all four films. I think that with adding Kirkman to lead the writing team is a great idea and I think that he can finally help this franchise in the best way possible.

Warner Bros. has set Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant, starring Ben Affleck, Jeffrey Tambor, Anna Kendrick and J.K. Simmons, for release on January 29, 2016. The Accountant stars Affleck as a mild-mannered accountant who moonlights as a lethal assassin. The January 29 release date was originally being held for a mystery New Line horror film, but that film will now arrive one week earlier, on January 22. The Accountant, then, will face off against Walt Disney Pictures’ The Finest Hours, starring Ben Foster, Casey Affleck, Chris Pine, Eric Bana and Holliday Grainger, as well Kung Fu Panda 3, the third entry in DreamWorks Animation’s hit animated franchise.

I'm a little in between on this news. For one I'm glad that the film is going to be hear within 8 months, but the film is coming out in January where a lot of films go to die. The weekend that it is on however is a pretty stacked weekend and it has the chance to do some serious business if it ends up being good. The film sounds cliched, but with the cast that is apart of the film I think it'll be just fine.
