Weekend Movie News 3-13-15 to 3-15-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Oscar winner Jamie Foxx has revealed to New York’s Power 105 radio show The Breakfast Club (via Uproxx) that none other than legendary director Martin Scorsese will direct him as Mike Tyson for an upcoming Paramount biopic. Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Terence Winter, who worked with Scorsese on The Wolf of Wall Street and in creating HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” has penned the screenplay.  “I just went in with Paramount with Mike Tyson,” Foxx said. “So I’m going to do the Mike Tyson story. Listen, to be in the same room pitching Mike Tyson to Paramount, Mike Tyson is on one side, I’m on the other side and doing Mike Tyson at the same time. And Martin Scorsese at the helm. This will be the first boxing movie that Martin Scorsese has done since Raging Bull.” When the film was announced last summer, Tyson himself told IGN of Scorsese’s potential involvement, and also said the plan is to utilize the same technology used in 2008’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to allow Foxx to portray Tyson at all stages of his career. “Iron” Mike Tyson achieved popularity in his heyday as a boxer, which took him to the very top of the sport, as well as for a fall from grace that included six years in prison for rape as well as subsequent charges of driving while drunk and drug possession after the death of his daughter and filing for bankruptcy. Tyson published a best-selling memoir and performed a one-man show, both titled “Undisputed Truth,” although it is unknown if either have formed the basis of Winter’s screenplay. Michael Jai White previously played Iron Mike in a 1995 HBO biopic titled “Tyson,” while Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega was chosen to lead a Spike Lee-directed HBO series “Da Brick” loosely based on Mike Tyson’s life in 2011, but the show never got off the ground.

This is an amazing idea. Jamie Foxx is an Academy Award winning actor and possibly getting him to work with Martin Scorsese is just a brilliant move. Mike Tyson is an interesting man and whether you love him or hate him you cannot deny that he is one of the top 5 boxers of all-time. His life story is very interesting and to get the chance to see it on the big screen is going to be amazing. I can't wait to see Foxx and Scorsese work together on this project.

Following Walt Disney Pictures’ announcement earlier today that Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theaters on May 26, 2017, 20th Century Fox has made a quick decision to move back Fantastic Four 2 from June 2, 2017 to June 9, 2017. While it’s not a huge push back, it does give the superhero sequel a bit more breathing room. Warner Bros. Pictures, meanwhile, hasn’t said anything about The LEGO Batman Movie yet, as that film also previously set a release date of May 26, 2017. An origin story said to be inspired largely by the “Ultimate Fantastic Four” comics (the first arc of which was written by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar with Joe Kubert illustrating), Fantastic Four offers a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team. The story centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. “Marvel’s First Family” will include Whiplash‘s Miles Teller as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), “House of Cards” star Kate Mara as Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman), Fruitvale Station and Chronicle‘s Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and The Adventures of Tintin‘s Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm (The Thing). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ Toby Kebbell will also star as Doctor Doom alongside Reg E. Cathey (“The Wire”) as as Dr. Franklin Storm and Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as Harvey Elder, aka The Mole Man.

This is a complete no-brainer idea. The people over at 20th Century Fox know that their former property will dominate the box office for a couple of weeks and it's a smart idea and it was the only place that they could really go other than a week back. I honestly expect Warner Bros. to follow suit with moving the Lego Batman movie back because a lot of kids will go see Star Wars instead of a Lego movie.

We’re not sure when Kevin Smith’s imminent retirement transformed into the most ambitious slate of indie films since the days of Golan-Globus, but here we are. This morning America’s favorite wake ‘n bake director–currently in post-production on the Johnny Depp-led Yoga Hosers–took to his Facebook for an announcement of epic snoogans proportions…Post by Kevin Smith.
If we didn’t know any better, that “I smell a rat” denouement might just be a hint that Smith will be going back to the mall that nearly ended his career before it began in 1995 with his first studio gig, Mallrats. Although there have been six theatrical films and an animated TV series set in the View Askew universe, Mallrats has the distinction of being the most poorly received, both critically and box office-wise. It was only after he rebounded with the micro-budget Chasing Amy in 1997 that Smith got things back on track. However, Mallrats has a large cult following among Smith aficionados, having helped launch the careers of Jason Lee and Ben Affleck and earning a special director’s cut in 2005.

This is fantastic news to hear. Now granted I know that a lot of people don't like Mallrats, but I absolutely love the movie. It pretty much presents what I would want to after a girlfriend broke up with me. I hope that the original cast returns for the film because it just won't be the same type of movie without them.

Universal Pictures has released the new international trailer for Furious 7 which features an intro by Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez and you can check it out below. Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel (Guardians of the Galaxy, Riddick), Paul Walker (Brick Mansions, Takers) and Dwayne Johnson (Hercules, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) lead the returning cast of Furious 7. James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring) directs this chapter of the hugely successful series that also welcomes back favorites Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar, Machete), Jordana Brewster (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, “Dallas”), Tyrese Gibson (Transformers, Death Race), Chris “Ludacris” Bridges (New Year’s Eve, No Strings Attached), Elsa Pataky (Where the Road Meets the Sun, Snakes on a Plane) and Lucas Black (Jarhead, Friday Night Lights). The April 3, 2015 release also features Jason Statham (The Transporter, Snatch), Tony Jaa (Ong-Bak, The Protector), Kurt Russell (The Art of the Steal, The Hateful Eight), Nathalie Emmanuel (“Game of Thrones,” “Hollyoaks”), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy, How to Train Your Dragon 2), John Brotherton (The Conjuring, Help for the Holidays) and a cameo by Iggy Azaela. Neal H. Moritz, Vin Diesel and Michael Fottrell return to produce Furious 7, which features a screenplay Chris Morgan.

This was a really great trailer. It showed a lot more footage of the film with some of the stuff we've already seen before. I kind of start to tear up when I see Paul Walker in the trailers and it makes me sad that this is his last film and I've heard that the way they send him off is the perfect way to do it. I'm a fan of the franchise and I'm really excited to see this film.

Heat Vision has revealed that Frozen star Josh Gad will play Gaston’s buffoonish sidekick Lefou in Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action take on Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. Lefou was created specifically for Disney’s 1991 version of the tale, where he was voiced by Jesse Corti. Gad will star opposite Luke Evans, who will playing Gaston, along with leads Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the transformed prince known only as Beast. Set to be directed by Bill Condon (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn) from a screenplay by Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, Beauty and the Beast marks the latest in a string of live-action retellings of classic Disney animated classics. In addition to the recently-released Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent, the studio released their Kenneth Branagh-helmed Cinderella today and has a Jon Favreau-directed version of The Jungle Book on the way April 15, 2016, as well as a Tim Burton-ized take on Dumbo in the works. Gad, who just reprised the voice of snowman Olaf in the short film Frozen Fever, stars opposite Billy Crystal in the upcoming FX series “The Comedians,” and has a supporting role in this summer’s Adam Sandler vehicle Pixels. He is also expected to portray Roger Ebert opposite Will Ferrell’s Russ Meyer in the biopic Russ & Roger Go Beyond and he will, of course, return as Olaf in Frozen 2.

I think this is the perfect casting. Josh Gad is a tremendous actor and putting him in this film shows that Disney can trust him outside of playing Olaf in Frozen. This film is shaping up to be absolutely fantastic from the cast to the director. After seeing Cinderella this past weekend I trust Disney adapting their animated films to live-action films in the future.
