3-10-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Disney/Pixar are opening our minds with the new trailer for Inside Out, their newest classic-in-the-making. Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions –Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school. Inside Out is written and directed by Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc., Up) with co-director Ronnie del Carmen. It is due for release June 19, 2015, only five months before Pixar’s next effort The Good Dinosaur opens on November 25, 2015.

This was an amazing trailer. It showed us more of the film and it gave us a better look at what the film will be about. I've been saying it for awhile now but this film is going to win Best Animated Feature at The Oscars next year and it could very well contend for Best Picture. This is the film that will put Pixar back in the spotlight and you can take that to the bank. I love the voice cast involved and I'm really excited to see this movie.

New Line Cinema and Village Roadshow Pictures have released the new trailer for action-thriller San Andreas, opening in 3D and 2D theaters on Friday, May 29. San Andreas reunites Dwayne Johnson with director Brad Peyton and producer Beau Flynn, following their collaboration on the global hit Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. After the infamous San Andreas Fault finally gives, triggering a magnitude 9 earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Johnson) and his estranged wife make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning, and when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started. Directed by Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island), San Andreas also stars Carla Gugino (“Night at the Museum” films, “Entourage”), Alexandra Daddario (“Percy Jackson” films, “True Detective”), Ioan Gruffudd (“Fantastic Four” films), Archie Panjabi (“The Good Wife), Hugo Johnstone-Burt (“Home and Away”), Art Parkinson (“Game of Thrones”) and Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man). It will be released in theaters on May 29. The May 29 release is produced by Beau Flynn (Hercules, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island). Richard Brener, Samuel J. Brown, Michael Disco, Rob Cowan, Tripp Vinson and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Carlton Cuse, story by Andre Fabrizio & Jeremy Passmore.

This was actually a pretty cool trailer. Eventhough we knew what this film was going to be about it was still great to gain a better knowledge and to see some more footage. The film has a mix of Volcano and 2012 to it and that can be a good or bad thing. I feel that with The Rock involved that this film will make a lot of money, but the quality may not be so good.

Following his recent Margaret Keane biopic Big Eyes and the currently-in-production Miss Peregrine’s Home for Unusual Children, director Tim Burton is making plans to return to Walt Disney Pictures for a new live action adaptation of an animated feature. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Alice in Wonderland helmer will take on Dumbo, first announced for development last summer. The original animated Dumbo, released in 1941, marked Disney’s fourth full-length animated feature and told the story of a young circus elephant who, mocked for his enormous ears, discovers that he can actually use them to fly.  The new film, which is planned to blend CGI and live-action, will feature a screenplay by Transformers scribe Ehren Kruger. Disney has been finding quite a bit of success lately with live action takes on their classic films. The recent Maleficent grossed more than $750 million worldwide while Burton’s own Alice in Wonderland took in more than a billion. The studio will release Kenneth Branagh’s take on Cinderella this Friday while a Jon Favreau helmed take on The Jungle Book is slated to hit the big screen April 15, 2016. Tim Burton's next project stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield and Samuel L. Jackson in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Unusual Children and it will arrive in theaters March 4, 2016.

This is a pretty interesting choice. Look Tim Burton is one of the best directors working in the business today, but I don't think this is the film for him. I didn't hate his version of Alice in Wonderland, but it still didn't meet my expectations and I just worry that he won't take the source material seriously and it will end up being something like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Dumbo is one of my favorite animated films of all-time and I'll admit that it makes me cry every single time and if they go through with this they better respect the source material.

Although Joseph Kosinski has long been attached to helm a big screen follow-up to his 2010 TRON Legacy, news from the grid has been fairly quiet these past few years. That appears to changing today, however, as Vancouver-based VanCity Buzz is reporting that TRON 3 is gearing up for a fall shoot! We’ve heard rumblings recently that a new TRON feature was being eyed at the studio, but we have not as of yet received any official confirmation. According to the outlet, however, cameras will roll beginning October 5! According to the outlet, Garrett Hedlund is attached to reprise his role as Sam Flynn. Although her name isn’t listed, it’s hard to imagine the story continuing from where it left off in TRON Legacy without Olivia Wilde’s Quorra returning as well. Released in 1982, the original TRON underperformed at the box office, but nonetheless managed to find an important place in pop culture over the next few decades. The sequel was scripted by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz from a story they developed with Brian Klugman and Lee Sternhal, based in turn on characters created by Bonnie MacBird and original TRON helmer Steven Lisberger. That film’s worldwide box office exceeded $400 million.

I'm not really excited to hear this news. After the disappointment that was Tron: Legacy I don't want to see another Tron movie. I'm a huge fan of the original and I thought that Tron: Legacy failed to live up its predecessor. I'll only agree to this if Joseph Kosinski doesn't come back because I thought his direction was the right one that the film needed to go in and he also did Oblivion which I also didn't like. If this happens my only plead is that you make it so you honor the original film.

Following the initial casting announcement last month, Columbia Pictures has added Ben Foster (Lone Survivor, 3:10 to Yuma) to the cast of the upcoming Inferno, the third film in the franchise that launched with The Da Vinci Code in 2006 and continued with Angels & Demons in 2009. Ron Howard returns as both director and producer with Tom Hanks set to reprise his role as Robert Langdon opposite Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) as Dr. Sienna Brooks, Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi) as Harry Sims (also known as The Provost), Omar Sy (The Intouchables) as Christoph Bruder and Sidse Babett Knudsen (“Borgen”) as Dr. Elizabeth Sinskey, the head of the World Health Organization. Foster’s specific role has not yet been revealed, but it said to be villainous in nature. The Imagine Entertainment production, which has a screenplay by David Koepp based on the book by Dan Brown, is slated for release on October 14, 2016 and will begin principal photography at the end of April. The project’s executive producers include Dan Brown, Anna Culp, Bill Connor, and David Householter. Inferno continues the Harvard symbologist’s adventures on screen: when Robert Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks, a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories and prevent a madman from releasing a global plague connected to Dante’s immortal tome. Coming up, Foster will be playing Lance Armstrong in Stephen Frear’s biopic Icon, starring opposite Chris Prine and Eric Bana in Craig Gillespie’s The Finest Hours and as part of the ensemble cast of Duncan Jones’ video game adaptation Warcraft. Michael De Luca and Andrea Giannetti are overseeing Inferno for Columbia Pictures.

This is terrific casting. Ben Foster is very underrated actor and eventhough his role may not be that big in this film I'm still glad to see him on the big screen again. Hearing that Foster has been cast in this film it makes me want to see it just so I can see his perfromance. I'm not a fan of the franchise and the past two film haven't had much success at the box office so it will be interesting to see how this film plays out.
