3-18-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

DreamWorks Pictures’/Fox 2000 Pictures’ upcoming dramatic thriller directed by three-time Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List) and starring two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Philadelphia), has been titled Bridge of Spies. In addition, 12-time Oscar nominee Thomas Newman (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Saving Mr. Banks) has been signed to score the film, as John Williams’ schedule was interrupted and he was unavailable to score the film due to a minor health issue, now corrected. A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, Bridge of Spies tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life. The film will be released in theaters nationwide on October 16, 2015. Williams, whose credits include Stars Wars: The Force Awakens and the “Harry Potter” films, will join Spielberg on his next film, The BFG, beginning later this year, continuing their unprecedented collaboration which they have enjoyed for over 40 years. Newman has scored many films for DreamWorks, including The Help, Road to Perdition and American Beauty, the latter two for which he received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score. Bridge of Spies also stars three-time Tony Award winner Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, a KGB agent defended by Donovan; Scott Shepherd as CIA operative Hoffman; Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan as James’ wife, Mary; Sebastian Koch as East German lawyer Vogel; and Academy Award nominee Alan Alda as Thomas Watters, a partner at Donovan’s law firm. Fox 2000 Pictures co-financed Bridge of Spies with DreamWorks in association with Participant Media, and will distribute internationally. Disney will handle domestic distribution. In addition to directing, Spielberg will produce the film with Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger, with Adam Somner, Daniel Lupi, Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Matt Charman and three-time Academy Award winners Ethan Coen & Joel Coen.

This is a great title. It doesn't give much away, but it is very intriguing. Stephen Spielberg is one of the greatest directors of all-time and any film he directs is a must-see. I'm also glad to see Tom Hanks in the film and especially great to know that the Coen brothers are writing the script. This film has Oscar bait written all over it and don't be surprised to see this film get quite a few nominations come Oscar season next year.

Lionsgate has debuted the teaser poster for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 2, the final chapter in which Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) now fully realizes the stakes are no longer just for survival they are for the future and you can check it out below.         This is a pretty nice poster. Granted it looks just like the previous teaser posters for the previous films. but it is still a decent looking poster. With this teaser poster being released you can expect some sort of teaser trailer tomorrow. This is about the window the studio needs to market the film just to remind everyone it is coming out in 8 months. I've loved the franchise so far and I can't wait to see this final installment.

Warner Bros. and MGM (via Yahoo!) have revealed the first trailer and poster for inspirational dog story Max, which opens in theaters on June 26 and you can check it out both below. Inspired by true events, the plot tells of a military dog that is traumatized after his handler’s death in Afghanistan and is sent home where it is adopted by the bereaved family. He bonds with the soldier’s troubled 14-year-old brother, and together, they begin to heal one another and discover a secret about the soldier’s death.         This was actually a really great trailer. I hadn't heard of the film until now and with the director of Remember the Titans and the producer of Marley & Me this film will have a lot of heartfelt and genuine moments and . Listen I'm a huge dog lover and any films with a dog as the main character is going to be a film a I watch. I also love the cast that's assembled and I can't wait to check out the film.

The Wrap is reporting that “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez will take the female lead opposite Mark Wahlberg in Lionsgate and Participant Media’s Deepwater Horizon movie, to be directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor). Based on the true events that occurred on a BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon chronicles the courage of those who worked on the Deepwater Horizon and the extreme moments of bravery and survival in the face of what would become one of the biggest man-made disasters in world history. A recent Golden Globe-winner, Rodriguez beat out Kristin Stewart for the role of Andrea Fleytas, a navigator aboard the doomed rig who was reprimanded for sending out a distress signal to the Coast Guard during the disaster. Wahlberg will play electrician Mike Williams. Featuring a screenplay by Matthew Sand and Matthew Carnahan, Deepwater Horizon is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Look for it to hit theaters September 30, 2016.

This is great casting. Gina Rodriguez is absolutely on fire and from what I've seen of her in Jane the Virgin she can act. I like her being cast in the film simply because it gets her name out there and this could be a big break for her. The Peter Berg/Mark Wahlberg team-up has been great so far and I hope they can continue their success. The film sounds really interesting and I can't wait to see it.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has set Straight Outta Compton writer Jonathan Herman to perform a script rewrite on its upcoming reboot of Scarface, to be helmed by Chilean director Pablo Larrain (No). Herman will fine-tune the screenplay that was already written by Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco) and David Ayer (Suicide Squad). Originally directed for the screen by Howard Hawks in 1932, the story of a gangster’s rise to power was based on the 1929 Armitage Trail novel of the same name. In 1983, Brian De Palma offered a modernized update of the story with Al Pacino in the lead, which is the version best known today. Now, producers Martin Bregman and Marc Shmuger (the former of which produced De Palma’s version) are moving forward with a third big screen take on Scarface, which will follow a Mexican lead in present-day Los Angeles. The character will keep the first name of Tony from the De Palma version, but will have a different last name.

I think this is a great idea. Straight Outta Compton hasn't been released yet, but everything form the trailer seems like it will be awesome and that could be attributed to the writing. This will be a highly scrutinized project simply because Scarface is so amazing, but a lot of people don't know that Scarface (1983) is also a remake so it shouldn't get any negative heat for being a remake. The one thing I don't like is changing the last name, but other than that I can't wait to see Straight Outta Compton and the Scarface remake.
