3-16-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Recent Academy Award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel) told French program Radio Classique’s Culture Club (via Film Music Reporter) that he will take on scoring duties for Disney and Lucasfilm’s first “Star Wars” standalone film, titled Rogue One. This will reteam Desplat with director Gareth Edwards, for whom he composed the music for last year’s blockbuster Godzilla. Set to star Academy Award-nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Rogue One is based on an idea by ILM CCO John Knoll with a screenplay by Chris Weitz, and is set to begin shooting this summer in London to debut in theaters on December 16, 2016. Knoll will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. Besides his regular work with Wes Anderson, the prolific Desplat is also known for such blockbusters as both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as well as three pictures for Weitz as director (The Golden Compass, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, A Better Life). In addition to winning for The Grand Budapest Hotel, he also received an Oscar nomination for The Imitation Game.

This is amazing news to hear. As said in the article Alexandre Desplat just won an Academy award for his work on The Imitation Game and I think he is a perfect choice to score a Star Wars movie. I kind of want to keep John Williams around to score every Star Wars film, but he's getting old, he has served his time working on Star Wars and he has other projects. I'm excited for Desplat and I cannot wait to see what he comes up with.

Last month, it was reported that hot “Boardwalk Empire” and Ben-Hur remake star Jack Huston was being tapped to portray the iconic Eric Draven in the long-gestating remake of The Crow, and now the comic’s creator James O’Barr has confirmed to Dread Central at the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention that the actor has signed on the line that is dotted. “Jack Huston has definitely been cast,” said O’Barr, who stated he was “really happy with that choice,” and that the film “will shoot in a couple of months.” During a videotaped panel at the con, O’Barr also let slip that “Downton Abbey” actress Jessica Brown Findlay will likely take the role of Draven’s murdered girlfriend Shelly in flashbacks. In keeping with the project’s English director Corin Hardy (The Hallow), O’Barr says most of the cast will be British, including at least one “Game of Thrones” vet. Here are some other hit points from the panel:  - The new film will hew closer to his original graphic novel, including the bird accompanying Eric actually talking to him. The bird effect could be brought to life with stop-motion animation, a staple of Hardy’s short and music video work. - It will be shot this spring in Belgium, standing in for Detroit. - O’Barr has a hand in choosing the soundtrack, which will include songs by Joy Division referenced in the book. - If the film is successful he hopes it will lead to sequels that (unlike the previous franchise) tackle The Crow in different forms and time periods, with the second film being a female Crow (presumably Iris Shaw from the 1996 graphic novel “The Crow: Flesh & Blood,” while another graphic novel, “The Crow: Dead Time,” features a Native American named Joshua during the Civil War era). With a screenplay by Cliff Dorfman, Relativity’s new screen version of The Crow is produced by Ryan Kavanaugh, Kevin Misher, Jeff Most and the original film’s Edward R. Pressman.

This is fantastic casting. I haven't watched much of Boardwalk Empire, but what I have watched Jack Houston  was spectacular and I think he is the perfect choice to play The Crow. As for Jessica Brown Findlay I haven't seen Downton Abbey, but I have heard great things about her I'm excited to see what she can do. I also love the comments for O'Barr and eventhough this film has went through a lot ups and downs I am really looking forward to seeing it.

On Tuesday, Sony Pictures will unleash the first trailer for ’80s arcade comedy action film Pixels, but the studio has already posted a short tease that you can watch below! The film, which stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage and Brian Cox, hits theaters on July 24. In Pixels, intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them and attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper (James) has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Sandler), now a home theater installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders (Dinklage and Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Monaghan plays the team’s unique weapons specialist. The action-comedy is directed by Chris Columbus from a story by Tim Herlihy and a screenplay by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling, based on the original short film of the same name by Patrick Jean. The film is produced by Adam Sandler, Chris Columbus, Mark Radcliffe, and Allen Covert. Executive Producers are Barry Bernardi, Michael Barnathan, Jack Giarraputo, Heather Parry, Tim Herlihy, Steve Koren, Patrick Jean, Benjamin Darras, Johnny Alves, Matias Boucard, Seth Gordon, and Ben Waisbren.

This was actually a pretty nice little teaser. Now granted it was only 11 seconds, but it still got me interested in it. I wasn't looking forward to it simply because of Adam Sandler, but since one of his friends isn't directing I think this could be a great movie. I love the concept and when the first trailer drops tomorrow we can finally start to dissect the movie.

Focus Features has debuted a teaser for the upcoming trailer for Insidious Chapter 3 from writer/director Leigh Whannell which you can check out in the player below along with a brand new poster and you can check out the teaser below. Insidious Chapter 3 stars Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott alongside Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, and Whannell, with the latter trio reprising their roles from the first two movies in the franchise. This chilling prequel, set before the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity. Jason Blum of Blumhouse, who produced both previous movies in the series, is producing the next installment with returning producer Oren Peli and franchise co-creator James Wan, who directed the two earlier films written by Whannell with story by Wan and Whannell. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Steven Schneider, Charles Layton, and Xavier Marchand executive-produce. The film debuts in theaters on May 29.

I have to say that was a pretty creepy 19 seconds. The music playing in the background was very haunting and since this is a prequel I'm really curious to see how it all will tie into the first two movies. Bloomhouse may not make the greatest films in the world, but they know what they are doing because they make money. I really enjoyed the first two film and I'm looking forward to this one.

Paramount Pictures announced today that they have picked up the worldwide distribution rights to the movie Captive, directed by Jerry Jameson and starring David Oyelowo (Selma) and Kate Mara (“House of Cards”) with plans to release the film on September 18, 2015. Based on the book “Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero” written by Ashley Smith with Stacey Mattingly, it tells the story of how Smith, a single mother and recovering drug addict, was taken hostage in her own apartment by alleged rapist Brian Nichols, played in the film by Mara and Oyelowo, respectively. The novel was adapted for the screen by Brian Bird (“Touched by an Angel”). Oyelowo received a number of awards nominations for his portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. in last year’s Oscar-nominated Selma, also released by Paramount, and he’s quoted in the press release as saying,“I was drawn to this story because it beautifully illustrates how a broken spirit can be healed by an unexpected source of hope. I feel blessed to be continuing my very fruitful relationship with Paramount.” Also starring in the film are Michael K Williams, Mimi Rogers, Jessica Oyelowo and Leonor Varela, and it’s produced by Terry Botwick, Jerry Jameson, David Oyelowo and Ken Wales in addition to BN Films’ Alex Garcia, Lucas Akoskin and Katrina Wolfe. Executive producers are Santiago Garcia Galvan, BN’s Jonathan Gray, Elliott Lester, Ralph Winter and Bird. BN fully financed the picture. Bootlick also offered the following statement in the press release: “In March of 2005 Ashley’s story captivated the nation on news outlets everywhere. Her story is thrilling and redemptive as God intersected the lives of two very broken people in the most dramatic way. It has been amazing getting to know Ashley and to be working with such fine actors. I’m so pleased to also be partnering with Paramount to bring this authentic encounter to a worldwide audience.” With AG Studios President Alex Garcia adding:  “Jerry Jameson has done a fantastic job bringing to life Ashley Smith’s harrowing ordeal and miraculous redemption, and Kate Mara portrays her with phenomenal sensitivity and poignancy. Along with “Nightingale,” “Captive” also represents our second collaboration with the brilliantly talented David Oyelowo. We look forward to continuing this special relationship with David and believe that the film has found the perfect home at Paramount.”

This is great casting. David Oyelowo is a fantastic actor and his performance as Martin Luther King Jr. was just spectacualr and he was robbed of an Oscar nomination this past year. This movie sounds amazing and the addition of Kate Mara is also a great decision. I think this movie has a lot of potential and I can't wait to see how it turns out.
