Weekend Movie News 10-3-14 to 10-5-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Back in April, it was announced that director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and star Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) were boarding Sony's hotly-anticipated biopic of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, but The Hollywood Reporter says the Titanic star has now left the project. The re-teaming of Oscar-winner Boyle and five-time nominee DiCaprio, who had worked together on 2000's The Beach, seemed like a slam-dunk for telling the tumultuous life of Jobs, who passed away in 2011. Apparently DiCaprio prioritized Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's currently-lensing western The Revenant over the Jobs movie, but rather than shuffling it as his follow-up project, the actor will instead take an unspecified amount of time off from acting.

According to THR, Sony's shortlist to replace DiCaprio as the tech icon includes Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale, the latter of whom was pursued by original director David Fincher for the role. Apparently Fincher's initial commitment to the project was wholly tied to Bale's potential involvement, which is not surprising given the actor's resemblance to Jobs and his masterful ability to lose weight, which will no doubt be required for portraying Jobs' final years suffering from pancreatic cancer. The currently-untitled Steve Jobs biopic was adapted by The Social Network's Aaron Sorkin from Walter Isaacson's best-selling biography, and will be produced by Scott Rudin.

This is pretty shocking news. When I first heard the news that Leonardo DiCaprio portraying Steve Jobs I was really intrigued and was looking froward to the movie. Now I'm excited to see the film, but not as much as I was before. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of talented actors to replace DiCaprio, but it gives the film a big blow. My replacement would be Christian Bale over the rest of the speculated actors.

Paramount Pictures has set Dwayne Johnson to headline their long-gestating big screen version of Baywatch! The Hollywood Reporter today also brings word that the We're the Millers team of Sean Anders and John Morris will direct with Justin Malen having just been brought aboard to rewrite the screenplay. Jeremy Garelick and Peter Tolan were both previously attached to script Baywatch. Their versions of their comedy-heavy take on the script was said to have little to do with the original series, although parts had been written in for both Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff to reprise their roles. Current plans for the project, however, are unknown.

This is interesting news. Now don't get me wrong Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is a talented actor and is a perfect choice for the movie, but it's the fact it's the Baywatch movie. I'm really curious to see how the studio will handle this. i think the only way you can go is to make it a comedy, but with some serious tones. I'm skeptical about the film, but I'll give it a chance.

After the success of X-Men: Days of Future Past--which bested any previous X-Men movie at the box office by $300-million--director Bryan Singer and producer/co-writer Simon Kinberg aren't afraid to stack the deck of mutant stories to explore in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. Collider sat down with the prolific Kinberg and got the skinny on several new developments for the prequel/sequel.

Besides going into more depth on the famously contentious friendship between Charles Xavier/Professor X (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr/Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Apocalypse will once again explore the romance between Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Hank McCoy/Beast (Nicholas Hoult) first teased in X-Men: First Class. "The relationship between Beast and Mystique is a really interesting one that we didn’t have a lot of time to explore in 'Days of Future Past,'" said Kinberg, "so we’ll have an opportunity to do more of that in 'Apocalypse.' Part of what’s really interesting about Mystique’s character is that she is, in some ways, the child of both Erik and Charles. She grew up with Charles and then she sort of became a woman with Erik, so her being the cross-pollination, if you will, of those two philosophies and those two men is something we can explore in the movie too."

Once again directed by Bryan Singer from a script by Kinberg, Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris, cameras will start rolling in Montreal on FOX's X-Men: Apocalypse in April, 2015 for a May 27, 2016 release.

This is great news to hear. Mystique and Beast are great characters in both the comics and the films. Now the reason why I think they are doing this is because they want to introduce Nightcrawler (again). Mystique is his mother, but now Nightcrawler's father (Azazel) is dead (thanks to X-Men: Days of Future Past) so they may make Beast his father in the films and I'd be really interested to see if they take this route

Warner Bros. Pictures has debuted, via iTunes Movie Trailers, the first trailer for director Clint Eastwood's upcoming military drama, American Sniper, starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller and you can check it out below. Cooper plays Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. But there was much more to him than his skill as a sharpshooter.

U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname "Legend." However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the SEAL creed to "leave no man behind." But upon returning to his wife, Taya Renae Kyle (Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind.  American Sniper lands in theaters in a limited release December 25, expanding January 16, 2015.

This trailer was intense. It keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what will this man to decide whether or not to pull the trigger. The film looks really great, but I kinda have my doubts about Clint Eastwood who hasn't done that great in his last few outings (Jersey Boys and J. Edgar). So I have my doubts, but it could surprise me.

A Red Band trailer for the upcoming Home Sweet Hell is now online and viewable in the player below. Starring Katherine Heigl, Patrick Wilson, Jordana Brewster, Kevin McKidd and James Belushi, the film is slated to hit theaters in the spring of 2015. In the film, Mona (Heigl) and Don’s (Wilson) seemingly perfect suburban bliss is disrupted by a sexy extortionist and Mona will stop at nothing, including killing the competition, to keep her little slice of heaven.

This trailer looked so stupid. I feel so sorry for Patrick Wilson (who is very underrated) who has to have this film listed on his filmography and to be working with Katherine Heigl. Speaking of which Katherine Heigl is in this film which automatically means it's going to be horrible and she'll be horrible in it as well. I'm not looking forward to this film at all.
