10-14-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Earlier this month Joaquin Phoenix, long rumored to play Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme, was no longer in contention for Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange. Today, a new name has been thrown out as a contender for the part with Badass Digest claiming that Ewan McGregor is among those being considered. Doctor Strange is based on the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, who made his first appearance in 1963's "Strange Tales" #110. It follows the adventures of Stephen Strange (nodded at in this year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier), a brilliant neurosurgeon who, following a car accident, loses precision in his hands. His quest to regain his former skills sets Strange on a path to become the "Master of the Mystic Arts."

McGregor, whose credits range from Trainspotting to the Star Wars prequels, can next be seen in Mortdecai opposite Johnny Depp and in Jane Got a Gun opposite his Star Wars costar Natalie Portman. Although no official release date has been set for the film, the time table for production would lead one to believe that Doctor Strange will land on the July 8, 2016 release date that Marvel has already bookmarked for a theatrical release.

This is really interesting to hear. Ewan McGregor is a very talented underrated actors and this role does fit him. As much as I dislike the Star Wars prequels I will say that McGregor was one of the better parts. I had never thought of him in this role, but now after thinking about it I think he would be a great fit eventhough I would still rather prefer Jared Leto or Patrick Dempsey.

A new poster has just been revealed for Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World! Trevorrow himself tweeted the image, which you can check out in the gallery viewer below, alongside the new tagline, "The Park is Open"! Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on June 12, 2015, the anticipated movie stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D'Onofrio, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Judy Greer, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus and Andy Buckley. Jurassic World is a sci-fi terror adventure set 22 years after the horrific events of the original Jurassic Park.

This is a really awesome poster. It's so simple and it's a throwback to the original Jurassic Park poster. With that being said it fits into everything we've been hearing about the film in the sense that it will have a lot of throwbacks to the original film. Seeing this poster gets me even more excited for the film.

Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow appears to have found a new foe. TheWrap reports that Javier Bardem is in talks to play Captain Brand, the chief antagonist of Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
The film, which is set for a Queensland, Australia production, follows the events of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and is likely to feature the return of Penelope Cruz (Bardem's real-life wife) as Angelica. Previous reports have also hinted that Orlando Bloom's Will Turner might also be returning to the franchise.

No stranger to playing franchise villains, Bardem went toe-to-toe with James Bond in Sam Mendes' Skyfall in 2013 and, not long before that, took home an Academy Award for his role in Ethan and Joel Coen's No Country for Old Men. He can soon be seen in The Gunman, starring opposite Sean Penn, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone, Mark Rylance and Jasmine Trinca when the action thriller hits theaters February 20, 2015.Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg. The film is slated to be released in theaters on July 7, 2017.

This is great casting. Javier Bardem is an Academy Award winning actor and adding him to any film makes it more credible, whether or not the film will be good is a different story. Plus it helps that Bardem looks like a pirate. Like I said it's great casting and it makes me want to see the film, but only for him and nothing else.

Sony Pictures Classics has today released, via Yahoo! Movies, a new trailer for director Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher, starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller and Anthony Michael Hall. Check it out in the player below! Opening in limited theaters on November 14, Foxcatcher tells the gripping, true story of Olympic Wrestling Champion brothers Mark Schultz (Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Ruffalo) and their relationship with the eccentric John du Pont (Carell), heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune that led to murder.

This was a very awesome yet very haunting trailer. It really combined every little teaser trailer that has been released and they were just put into one big trailer. This film looks amazing and I'm goignt ot go ahead and say that the film will get a lot of Oscar nominations especially in the categories of Best Picture, Director, Actor, Screenplay and Cinematography. I'm so excited for the film and I cannot wait to see it.

20th Century Fox has made a few changes to its upcoming release calendar, including pushing Independence Day 2 one week earlier. Originally planned for release on July 1, 2016, the much-anticipated sequel will hit the big screen on June 24, 2016 instead, the same day as Universal Pictures' The Mummy reboot.

This is pretty interesting. Like I always say when you change movie dates it can be a good and a bad thing. When a movie moves up then it's a pretty good decision, but it also depends on the competition. With ti going up against The Mummy it might be a good thing especially looking at Dracula Untold's numbers and reviews (both are supposed to be apart of a cinematic universe) and it may put Universal's plan in a tailspin. The one thing that concerns me is that it comes out a week after Finding Dory which I believe will have a long stay at the box office so it could hurt Independence Day 2. But staying on its original date would of also been bad since July 1 is a loaded day (Both Angry Birds and Tarzan come out on that day). So in the best interst of the film this was the best date or they could have scrapped the project completely (but that is a whole other story).
