10-21-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Primarily known for his stage work, Ray Fisher was cast earlier this year as Victor Stone, the character who becomes the DC Comics superhero Cyborg. Now, in an interview with EW, Fisher confirms that he'll be appearing not only in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice but, as has been long suspected, in both halves of Zack Snyder's Justice League before getting his own solo film in 2020. “I didn’t know the extent to which DC and WB had planned on taking my character,” Fisher tells the outlet. “When I signed on, I just wanted to be part of this world. But that specific information, I found out then and there. I didn’t think I’d be getting my own stand-alone film... Let me tell you, man, people are in for a hell of a treat.”

Cyborg made his first appearance in 1980's "DC Comics Presents" #26. In the "New 52" continuity, he's a high school athlete who, after getting caught in a S.T.A.R. Labs explosion, is given powerful bionic abilities that lead to him becoming a founding member of the Justice League.Fisher also adds that he's already met (although has not necessarily filmed alongside) fellow JLA members Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) along with Jason Momoa (Aquaman) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's resident supervillain, Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor). Also set to star Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Scoot McNairy, Jena Malone and Tao Okamoto, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters March 25, 2016.

I really like hearing this. Look Ray Fisher may not be a big name actor, but he's an Broadway actor and those guys are trained to act. I honestly think he'll be a great fit for the role. It'll also be good for him to be in other movies that way the audience can get familiar with him and the character.

James Wan is returning to direct and produce The Conjuring 2. Wan, who launched his career with Saw and who helmed both Insidious films in addition to the original The Conjuring, is certainly no stranger to horror. His next film, however, takes him to a whole new genre as he's behind the wheel of Universal Pictures' franchise sequel, Fast & Furious 7, which hits the big screen April 3, 2015. Unlike the recent spinoff film, Annabelle (which explored the back story of The Conjuring's terrifying doll), it is believed that The Conjuring 2 will continue the based-on-truth adventures of paranormal investigators Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's Ed and Lorraine Warren.

This is awesome news to hear, James Wan is a talented director and is a master at the horror film genre. I loved what he's done so far and I;m really excited to see him back to The Conjuring.

Speaking of The Conjuring 2, Warner Bros. Pictures has delayed their upcoming sequel to the 2013 James Wan hit The Conjuring. The tentatively-titled The Conjuring 2 will now arrive on an unspecified date in 2016. Taking the October 23, 2015 date will be an equally unspecified horror film from Warner Bros. As was the case with the original, The Conjuring 2 feature a screenplay by Chad and Carey Hayes, with James returning to direct.

This is really interesting. Like I always say when a film moves its release date back it's not always a good sign and in this case it is. Wit James Wan having such a busy schedule (finishing post-production of Fast & Furious 7, starting filming on Insidious 3) he won't get started on this until at least early 2015 so it makes sense for the film to come out on 2016.

Shane Black's upcoming 1970s film noir, The Nice Guys, has, according to The Hollywood Reporter, added Academy Award winner Kim Basinger to its cast. Basigner joins leading men Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, the former of whom she previously co-starred with in Curtis Hanson's own Los Angeles-set noir, LA Confidential. Also set to star Matt Bomer, Keith David, Beau Knapp, Angourie Rice and Margaret Qualley, The Nice Guys is set in 1970s Los Angeles and pairs an ex-fighter (Crowe) and a private detective (Gosling) as they attempt to solve a murder. Basinger, who recently starred in I Am Here and Four Minute Mile, will play a crooked Chief Justice. The film itself, scripted by both Black and Anthony Bagarozzi, hits theaters on June 17, 2016.

This is amazing casting. Kim Basinger is one of the best actresses in the business and one of the most underused actresses. I'm really excited to see her in this film because the last time she was in a film noir with Russel Crowe she won an Oscar in L.A. Confidential. Now I'm not saying she will for this, but you never know.

Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, "Game of Thrones") has taken a role in Ridley Scott's upcoming science fiction feature The Martian. The Hollywood Reporter has the news, bringing word that Bean will play a NASA flight director opposite Matt Damon, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Kristen Wiig and Jessica Chastain.

The Martian is based on Andy Weir's 2012 e-book publication, which issued a print edition this past February. It is officially described as follows: Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

This is pretty good casting. Look I know Sean Bean dies in just about every movie he is in, but he's still very talented. I'm really curious to see what role he'll be playing and maybe he actually survives the film. All I know is that this film sounds amazing and I cannot wait to see it.
