Weekend Movie News 12-11-15 to 12-13-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Following all the teasing from director Bryan Singer, 20th Century Fox has revealed the full X-Men: Apocalypse trailer, which you can check out below. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.” X-Men: Apocalypse stars James McAvoy as Charles Xaver, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, Lucas Till as Havok and newcomers Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Ben Hardy as Angel, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Olivia Munn as Psylocke and Lana Condor as Jubilee. Oscar Isaac is starring as the film’s title antagonist. Said to be the conclusion of a trilogy started with X-Men: First Class and continued with X-Men: Days of Future Past, the Bryan Singer-directed X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 27, 2016.

This was a pretty awesome trailer. Look the biggest complaint I've heard from a lot of people when the first photos of Apocalypse were released, was the fact that he looked like Ivan Ooze from the first Power Rangers film and I kinda tended to agree with that. With that being said it looks like they have cleaned a lot of him up and he looks a little bi more like the character from the comics and I like how they are sticking to his original powers which will be great to see on the big screen. I like the fact that they are bringing the religion factor to it because that is a major part of his character. It was also great to see younger versions of Storm, Jean Grey and Cyclopes as well as getting our first look at Jubilee, Psylocke and Archangel. Plus we finally got a look at James McAvoy with a bald head (the iconic look of Professor X) which is the money shot of the trailer and it just tugged at the geek heartstrings. The film looks like the stakes have been raised and this is going to be an epic film and I cannot wait to see this film.

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for their upcoming Independence Day: Resurgence, Roland Emmerich’s direct sequel to his 1996 blockbuster! You can watch the Independence Day: Resurgence below. Starring Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward, the new entry in the franchise is officially described as follows: We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction. Independence Day: Resurgence is set to be released in theaters on June 24, 2016.  Twenty-two years in the making, Independence Day: Resurgence features a script by Emmerich and Dean Devlin and James Vanderbilt, James A.Woods and Nicolas Wright.

This trailer wasn't half as bad as I thought it was going to be. When I first heard about the film happening, I immediately was upset becasue the first film ended on a perfect and happy note and a sequel wasn't necessary. Another thing that kinda made me skeptical was the fact that the film was going to be called ID Forever which is just so stupid and I'm glad they decided to go with Independence Day: Resurgence. As for the trailer itself, I really enjoyed the film and all of the hesitation I had beforehand is gone and I can't wait to see the film. I like how Jeff Goldblum is going to be the central main character of the film unlike last time where he pretty much split time between Will Smith and Bill Pullman. One thing that doesn't disappoint in a Roland Emmerich film is the visuals and they look pretty great in this film. It also seems like Liam Hemsworth is going to take the place of Will Smith as sorta the third lead. I also liked how they used the speech from the first film to play over the trailer. This seems like it is going to be a great summer blockbuster film and it's one I'm defiantly dying to check out.

Although the film went on to gross more than $400 million worldwide, some Alien franchise fans were disappointed that Ridley Scott’s 2012 Prometheus did not feature the franchise’s original creature design until the alternate “Deacon” form at the very end of the film. That’s not going to be the case with the upcoming Prometheus sequel, Alien: Covenant, Scott tells The Wrap. Covenant will bring back H.R. Giger’s popular Xenomorph in its many terrifying forms. “We’ll have them all,” Scott promises, “Egg, face-hugger, chest-burster, then the big boy.” Set as the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus, Alien: Covenant connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. It begins with the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. There, the crew discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. “They’re going to go to the planet where the engineers came from,” Scott continues, “and come across the evolving creature that they had made. Why did they make it? Why would they make such a terrifying beast? It felt bio-mechanoid, it felt like a weapon. And so the movie will explain that, and reintroduce the alien back into it.” 20th Century Fox will release Alien: Covenant in theaters on October 6, 2017. Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender are set to reprise their roles as scientist Elizabeth Shaw and the android David, respectively. Given the film’s synopsis, it remains to be seen how Rapace’s Shaw will factor into the film. Jack Paglen (Transcendence) and Michael Green (Green Lantern) are providing the Alien: Covenant screenplay.

I love this news so much. One thing that really made a lot of people mad at Ridley Scott because he kept denying over and over again that Prometheus was not connected to Alien in anyway when in fact it was and he treated us as fans like we were stupid which I think is why a lot of people didn't see Prometheus. But now that Scott has admitted that mistake and now he's saying that we are going to get the Xenomorph's and that just gets me giddy. The Xenomorph's are just awesome and I'll be glad to see them back in an Alien film especially in a lot of various different forms. I'm sad we have to wait until October 2017 to get to see the film, but I want the studio to take there time and do things right so they can give us another proper Alien film.

James Cameron has today offered EW an update regarding his plans for the future of the Avatar franchise. As previously revealed, a trilogy of Avatar sequels is on the way with Avatar 2 expected to tentatively hit the big screen in 2017. “I’m in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now,” Cameron says of the Avatar sequels’ current status. “Just refining. That’s in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We’ve been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much [set].” Confirmed to feature the return of cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, Avatar 2 and two additional Avatar sequels will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The sequels are currently being written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. The original 2009 Avatar remains the top grossing movie of all time with $2.782 billion at the worldwide box office. Living up to that impressive feat with the new Avatar sequels is a daunting task, but Cameron doesn’t seem to mind. “[Y]ou have to challenge yourself,” he says. “Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on ‘Avatar 2,’ to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time. So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say.”

I'm really skeptical about these comments. You have to remember that the first Avatar film came out in December 2009 and by the time the sequel comes out it will have been 8 years which frankly is way to long for an original property to take in between sequels and this film should've been out at least back in 2012 or 2013. Now Cameron is saying that he's going back over the scripts which kinda leads me to believe that he may push the films back another year and at that point James Cameron should just stop and not even worry about. We've been promised an Avatar seqeul for 5 years now and we haven't gotten anything and the longer this process drags out the less and less interested people will be to see the film because there are a lot of other major properties coming out in the next couple of years that will completely overshadow any Avatar sequel unlike in 2009 when there wasn't any major properties for it to compete with.

There are a lot of awards so I'm just going to go over the major conversation pieces. First, I know The Martian has some comedy in it, but that doesn't mean that it's a comedy and this is pretty typical of the Hollywood Foreign Press to do this because they want to nominate the film, but the drama category is filled so they put a film in the musical/comedy category so that the stars of the film will have a reason to come to the show. Another surprise is the fact Johnny Depp wasn't nominated for Best Actor and to me it's not surprising becasue the other nominated performances are way better (can't honestly say that for Will Smith since I haven't seen Concussion), but it doesn't surprise me due to the fact that the acting category is stacked once again this year. The other big surprise is the fact that both Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett are both put in the lead actress category, when the studio is pushing one for Best Actress and the other for Best Supporting Actress at The Oscars and that's a smart move because both are great performances and they could end up stealing votes from each other for the Golden Globes, but not for The Oscars. I may not respect the Hollywood Foreign Press, but they put on a fantastic show and I'm excited to see Ricky Gervais back as the host.
