12-21-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

With final numbers now in, Star Wars: The Force Awakens rose above estimates to post an all-time industry-high of $247,966,675 domestically and $281 million internationally for an all-time record global debut of $529 million since opening day-and-date December 16. This excludes any grosses from China, where the film opens Jan. 9, as well as Greece and India, where it opens this week. Domestically, Disney now holds four of the top five debuts of all time. In addition to posting the biggest Thursday preview gross ($57 million) and the biggest Friday and single-day ever ($119.1 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens set a new Sunday record of $60.5 million. Internationally, it was the biggest opening weekend ever in numerous territories including the UK (4-day), Australia, Russia, and Germany. The galactic debut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has pushed The Walt Disney Studios to its highest year on record. Today, Disney will cross the $5 billion mark in global box office in a calendar year for the first time ever, surpassing the previous full-year record of $4.73 billion set in 2013. The studio has also reached new highs domestically with $1.851 billion and internationally with $3.134 billion through December 20. (The previous best for each was also set in 2013 with $1.719 billion domestic and $3.013 billion international.) Directed by J.J. Abrams, the movie stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk produced the film with Tommy Harper and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Lawrence Kasdan & J.J. Abrams and Michael Arndt.

These are some fantastic numbers. Now I normally don't talk about box office numbers in movie news, but this is a special occasion. For the longest time everyone thought the opening weekend domestic record would be broken, but not by this amount. This film has exceeded expectations and to be honest is could've made more. The record for most theaters in an opening weekend is 4,468 which was set by The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens only opened in 4,134. That's 334 less theaters and if you take the per theater average for Star Wars and multiply that by 334 then you get 20,033,988. This movie could've easily made $270 million which is just absolutely insane. This film is going to break a lot of box office records in the days to come and I don't think the second weekend drop will be as bad as it is for other movies. Now the one question is whether or not it will beat Avatar's all-time worldwide record and I think it has a chance and next weekend will tell the story. If this film makes $200 million domestically next weekend then I think it has a chance to beat the record. This film is so good and I highly encourage you even if you aren't the biggest Star Wars fan, you still need to check it out and you will not be disappointed.

Production continues on the upcoming Bourne 5 film and speaking with Variety, Matt Damon opened up about where they currently stand with the film. “We’re, like, probably about halfway through. We started in September but they’re going dark for most of December and cutting basically the first two acts. And then we have the third act and then whatever we owe from the first two acts…We were in Tenerife, which is supposed to be Athens. It would be like a nighttime riot scene to kind of start the movie. And then England, Berlin a little bit for about a week, and a little bit in D.C. Then we’re going to Vegas for the third act…Big car chase on the strip.” Damon also spoke about the length between The Bourne Ultimatum and the upcoming film, revealing Jason Bourne has been off the grid for quite a long time if fans recall. “You’ll find the character — like “The Bourne Ultimatum,” the third act actually in the movie dovetails with the third act of “The Bourne Supremacy.” So technically when the Bourne character disappears, it’s still 2004. So when this next one comes out in ’16, it will have been 12 years — in movie years — that the character as been off the grid. So what’s happened in those intervening years gives you a story.” Julia Stiles will be reprising her franchise role with Ex Machina and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.‘s Alicia Vikander also set to star alongside franchise newcomers Tommy Lee Jones, Riz Ahmed, Vincent Cassell and Scott Shepherd. Although still unconfirmed, Jones is rumored to be playing a high-ranking CIA official with Cassell starring as the film’s chief antagonist, an assassin on Jason Bourne’s tail. Frank Marshall is producing the new “Bourne” movie alongside Jeffrey Weiner for Captivate Entertainment. Directed once again by Paul Greengrass, the film opens in theaters on July 29, 2016.

I really like these comments. I like how much Damon gave away in the sense of where they are right now. Now it's not worrying me, but this film comes out in July and they haven't done the third act yet and they are taking December off. This basically means that they are going to be pushing it for the release date. Now granted a lot of films aren't totally finished until the day before the films release, but this film might not make the date. Now granted I don't know how far along they are in editing the first two acts, but I have full confidence the film will be ready in time.

We already know Jeremy Renner is pretty clutch with a bow and arrow when he’s playing Hawkeye, but can he put up his dukes and fight like a man? Seems so, as The Hollywood Reporter says that Renner is slipping on the big red gloves to portray a legendary boxer in the biopic Undefeated: The Rocky Marciano Story. The expansive story will follow the Brockton, Massachusetts native from his childhood through his death in a plane crash in 1969, when Marciano died the only heavyweight champ in history with an undefeated record of 49-0.  Featuring a screenplay by Samuel Franco and Evan Kilgore (Butterflies of Bill Baker), Undefeated: The Rocky Marciano Story is currently searching for a director. Morris S. Levy (The Ten), owner of the rights to Marciano’s life story, will produce the film. Renner will next be seen opposite his American Hustle co-star Amy Adams in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama Story of your Life, and will reprise his role of Clint Barton/Hawkeye for the fourth time in Captain America: Civil War.

I really enjoy this casting. Jeremy Renner is an extremely talented yet very underrated actor and I'm glad he's going to be in a film like this. We've seen various boxing movies over the eyars and some of them have been based on real boxers (Raging Bull and Ali) and this is a bio-pic that is the one that needs to be made the most our of every boxer ever. Rocky Marciano is one of, if not the greatest box of all-time and to finally get a look at his backstory (which is very interesting) on the big screen with the caliber of actor Jeremy Renner portraying him really gets me excited. I'm very curious as to who will be the director because that's what this film will need to be successful.

Marlon Wayans wants you to step into his playroom as he rides the coattails of the phenomenally successful Fifty Shades of Grey franchise with his timely book/movie parody Fifty Shades of Black. Open Road Films has debuted the Fifty Shades of Black poster, which you can check out below. The supporting cast includes Jane Seymour (“Jane the Virgin,” Wedding Crashers), Kali Hawk (“Black Jesus,” Bridesmaids), Mike Epps (The Hangover, Jumping the Broom), Fred Willard (Anchorman, A Mighty Wind), Andrew Bachelor (We Are Your Friends, “Black Jesus”), Affion Crockett (Pixels, The Wedding Ringer) and Kate Miner (The Campaign, “Necessary Roughness”). Star and co-writer Wayans is no stranger to parody films, having spoofed horror flicks (A Haunted House, Scary Movie), dance flicks (Dance Flick) and South Central LA gang movies (Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood). He reunites with screenwriter Rick Alvarez and director Michael Tiddes, who made A Haunted House and A Haunted House 2 with him. Open Road Films will release Fifty Shades of Black on January 29, 2016.

Fifty Shades of Black

I really like this poster. I mean it's nothing special, but it is original and it pretty much fits into what the film is going to parody. Now this film will probably suck because most modern parodies are just absolutely terrible and they have a lot of forced jokes that you knew were going to be in the film. It's also coming out in the trashpile of movie months known as January so if this film is even slightly good then it would be a major surprise. Listen this film might be good, but I highly doubt it.

Warner Bros. has announced some changes to their release calendar, confirming that Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur movie has moved from its July 22, 2016 release date to February 17, 2017. The film was set to face 20th Century Fox’s Ice Age: Collision Course and Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek Beyond on its original date but will now go head-to-head with 20th Century Fox’s Maze Runner: The Death Cure and Sony’s Bad Boys III.  “I think where the pitfall has often been is trying to make King Arthur bland and nice, and nice and bland,” director Guy Ritchie previously told EW. “The two qualities make rather compatible bed companions. Unfortunately, they’re not interesting to watch. Luke Skywalker was always the most uninteresting character in Star Wars because he’s the good guy. Good guys are boring.” “He’s a little bit rough around the edges, but he’s basically a survivor. He’s a hustler,” Hunnam said of his version of the character. “He’s a street kid. There’s definitely a harder edge to him than people would imagine. It’s sort of classic Guy Ritchie stuff.” Ambitiously planned to potentially span six films, King Arthur will offer a re-imagining of Arthurian legend. Believed to have been a 6th century King, Arthur defended Britain against Saxon invaders. The key source material for the film will be Thomas Mallory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur,” published in 1485 as a compilation of French and English tales. Also starring Astrid Berges-Frisbey (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Jude Law (Spy, Sherlock Holmes), Eric Bana, and Djimon Honsou, King Arthur was written by Joby Harold, who is producing with Akiva Goldsman, Tory Tunnell and Ritchie himself. Cate Adams and Niija Kuykendall are overseeing for Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow.

This isn't surprising news. Nothing new about this film has come out in a really long time and it seems like the production of the film has just taken longer than the studio had thought so this is both a smart and yet concerning move. It's concerning because what little we did hear about the film sounded promising and now that the film is moving to February from the summer it shows that the studio wants to have an opportunity to make more money or that they have no faith in the film. For the smart side it doesn't have to go up against an animated film which will get the younger audience and the it would've been one on one with Star Trek Beyond  which is an established property and since they are both targeting the same market, one film would be more successful than the other. Hopefully this move doesn't hurt the film, because a Guy Ritchie directed King Arthur film sounds like it could be a fun time.
